The Kate Daniels Series

I read Ilona Andrews' Magic Bites when it was first released. Sadly I had a tough time getting through the book. The story wasn't pulling me in. What did interest me was the heroine Kate Daniels and Lion shape-shifter Curran. Even though I wasn't into the story, the characters are what kept me reading. Now it's pretty notorious that Urban Fantasy books rarely end with happy endings. Being a romantic at heart... at the time I decided not to continue the series.

Yesterday I came across book two Magic Burns at the library, I thought what the heck. So, I'm gonna give this series another try. I have it on my March reading list. Hopefully I'll enjoy this story more.

I've been waiting to go e-book shopping until all the books I wanted were out. Here's what I got. :)

This story is part of The Hunters series.

Book Description: Being a vampire sucks. Just ask Cori Lewis. The "Change" didn't change her enough. She's still shy, quiet and she never feels as though she belongs anywhere. Not even with the people who took her in after the vampire attack that left her near death. But other things have changed a lot. Cori needs sex — now!She goes in search of a one-night stand — hot sex with an anonymous man in a dark alley — and her life changes yet again. He's a connection to the past she thought was lost and he's everything she's ever dreamed. But when he finds out who she is, he might never be able to forgive her.

Book Description: When Maven, the eldest daughter of Caralon's mighty ruler, is given in marriage to the fearsome Dane of Rawley, she's horrified. Bad enough that she should be any man's possession, but she's heard the dreadful tales about Dane, tales of force and brutality. She goes into the marriage refusing to submit to him in any way—the only problem is, the sensuously forceful Dane demands her submission, especially in his bed, and he's determined to get it.As Maven begins to clash with the Beast of Rawley, she needs all her wits about her to win their erotic battle for control.

Book Description: Love can bloom where nothing else survives…

Wildlife photographer Chase Calder is no stranger to wandering in wilderness areas like the stark Nevada desert. When a freak electrical storm leaves him strangely disoriented, and he awakens as a prisoner in a high-security Air Force base under the scrutiny of a seductive microbiologist, he knows he’s in dangerous territory.
Undercover Special Ops agent Martina Sanchez finally has the proof she needs to expose the Acheron beam for the danger it is. Not a harmless bio-decontaminate, but a potentially deadly super-weapon. She’s also discovered exposure to the beam has more than one unexpected side effect for Chase whose sizzling touch melts her cool, professional resolve. It also melts steel walls.

Martina risks everything to free Chase before he becomes the next casualty of unauthorized scientific testing. Together they flee to safety, but safe becomes a relative term when their growing passion finally ignites…

This short story is a short continuation of Arcady Morrison and Snow Ipwhisk, stars of Silk and Steel.

Book Description: Arcady finally has a reason to celebrate Valentines Day, and a woman worth everything he's ever dreamed of to spoil. This year, all is possible and Arcady plans on making it the best Snow has ever had.

Book Description: Kit has never forgotten the cruel way Rysen rejected her as a possible consort over a hundred years ago. She's striven to get stronger, pushing her attraction to him down and using her anger as fuel.

Rysen has always regretted the way he rejected Kit. As much as he loved her, Rysen despised the way her clan tried to use her as a political gambit for power and protection. But he never stopped wanting Kit, trying to make her his in every way possible.

When enemies attack, they use old magic to seal themselves off and stay safe. But now they find themselves trapped with a century of hunger rising between them....

This is Stella Price writing as Dagmar Avery

Book Description:
Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack.and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she'd learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country will recognize her value as a pack member - and as his mate.

This one comes out on July 28, 2009. I don't think an offical blurb has been released yet, but there is was Ms. Briggs says about it on her website: "This will be the second book in the Alpha and Omega series, featuring Anna and Charles. It's set on a slightly earlier time-table than the Mercy books. In this book Bran is going to make the werewolves publicly known. Unfortunately, there are some fairly persuasive beings who aren't real keen on that idea."

Bad to the Bone

The cover art for Jeri Smith-Ready's Bad to the Bone (book 2 in the WVMP Radio series) was recently released and I just hand to share it. I can't wait to read this one.

WVMP Radio #2
May 19, 2009
Book Description: If you’re just joining us, welcome to radio station WVMP, “The Lifeblood of Rock ’n’ Roll.” Con-artist-turned-station-owner Ciara Griffin manages an on-air staff of off-the-wall DJs—including her new boyfriend Shane McAllister—who really sink their teeth into the music of their ‘Life Time” (the era in which they became vampires). It’s Ciara’s job to keep the undead rocking, the ratings rolling, and the fan base alive—without missing a beat.

For Halloween, WVMP is throwing a bash sure to raise the dead. They’ve got cool tunes, hot costumes, killer cocktails—what could go wrong? Well, for starters, a religious firebrand ranting against the evils of the occult preempts the station’s midnight broadcast. Then, when Ciara tracks down the illegal transmission, the broadcast tower is guarded by what appears to be…a canine vampire? And behind it all is a group of self-righteous radicals who think vampires suck (and are willing to stake their lives on it).

Now Ciara must protect the station while struggling with her own murky relationship issues, her best friend’s unlikely romance with a fledgling vampire, and the nature of her mysterious anti-holy powers. To make it to New Year’s in one piece, she’ll need to learn a few new tricks.…

WVMP Radio #1
Book Description: Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, 60s psychedelia, 80s Goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers how the DJs maintain their cred: they’re vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.

Ciara’s first instinct, as always, is to cut and run. But communications giant Skywave wants to buy WMMP and turn it into just another hit-playing clone. Without the station—and the link it provides to their original Life Times—the vampires would “fade,” becoming little more than mindless ghosts of the past. Suddenly a routine corporate takeover becomes a matter of life and un-death.

To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara re-brands the station as “WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock ’n’ Roll.” In the ultimate con, she hides the DJs’ vampire nature in plain sight, disguising the bloody truth as a marketing gimmick. WVMP becomes the hottest thing around—next to Ciara’s complicated affair with grunge vamp Shane McAllister. But the “gimmick” enrages a posse of ancient and powerful vampires who aren’t so eager to be brought into the light. Soon the stakes are higher—and the perils graver—than any con game Ciara’s ever played…

[Review] - Grave Sins

Title: Grave Sins
Author: Jenna Maclaine
Series: Cin Craven
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance
Year: 2009

Summary: In the arms of her lover Michael, Cin Craven has found satisfaction for her most primal longings, reaching heights of pleasure no mere human could ever imagine. She has also found a purpose for her unearthly powers. Cin is a member of The Righteous, a band of slayers that hunts down vampires who inflict evil upon the world.

With Michael by her side, Cin's latest mission brings her face-to-face with Marrakesh, a beautiful, half-mad vampire queen charged with slaughtering humans. If she's found guilty, Marrakesh will pay with her life. But Cin is convinced that someone - or something - far more ruthless is trying to steal the queen's throne.. It's a mission that will pit Michael and Cin against each other for the first time, awakening their darkest instincts and testing their love like never before.

Thoughts: This story takes place in 1828. It has been 13 years since the events in the first book (Wages of Sin) took place. Cin has grown into her position with The Righteous and as a vampire. In this installment feelings of jealousy arise, and relationships are tested. This story has action, romance and mystery, really a who dunnit story which I thoroughly enjoyed. I feel that Cin starts doubting herself a little but she comes back fierce and stronger then before. She makes a great heroine.

Quotes:
We are the Righteous
We are the hand of Justice
We are the sword of Vengeance
We are what evil Fears
~ The Righteous Motto
................................................................................
...but you are the last thing I think of before I sleep and the first thing I reach for when I wake. I want your love to warm me, your heart to inspire me, your humor to cheer me, and your beauty to tempt me....

James Patterson

I never thought I would find myself reading James Patterson. But I came across this book, it's the Manga version of his Young Adult series Maximum Ride. I admit it's the cover that got me, happens everytime. A pretty cover is hard to pass up. ;) But I ended up really enjoying it, and the art was pretty amazing too. Since I enjoyed the manga, I'm gonna give the first book in the series a try: Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Has anyone else read this series???

Here is the book description for both Novel & Manga:

Fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it's like to soar above the world. She and all the members of the "flock"--Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel--are just like ordinary kids--only they have wings and can fly. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time...like when Angel, the youngest member of the flock, is kidnapped and taken back to the "School" where she and the others were experimented on by a crew of wack jobs. Her friends brave a journey to blazing hot Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare--this one involving fighting off the half-human, half-wolf "Erasers" in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives. Along the way Max discovers from her old friend and father-figure Jeb--now her betrayed and greatest enemy--that her purpose is save the world--but can she?

[ARC Review] - Blood Vice

Title: Blood Vice
Author: Keith Melton
Series: Nightfall Syndicate
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Year: 2009

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: Mafia hit man. Vampire. The criminal underworld just got a whole lot darker.

Business has never been better for hit man Karl Vance. Boston is awash in mafia blood, and Vance has a certain fondness for blood. He’s a master vampire—one of the most powerful of his kind. Having sworn to never again feed on the blood of innocents, Karl preys instead on Boston’s criminal underworld. Which makes him a valuable asset to those who deal in death.

Maria Ricardi intends to use that asset to its full extent in order to gain power within her patriarchal crime family. Vance thinks he’s been hired to keep track of the family’s princess, but she’s got a plan to get her hands dirty and earn the respect she deserves. And she’s not above using their instant attraction to get what she wants.

That driving ambition draws the attention of a rival clan’s newest and most dangerous "consultant." Alejandro Delgado, Vance’s centuries-old nemesis. Delgado zeroes in on the one chink in Vance’s armor—his fondness for the headstrong Maria.

When she becomes enslaved by Delgado’s unnatural kiss, only one thing is certain. Vance has to decide which he wants more. To settle the score—or rescue her soul.

Thoughts: Karl is Mafia hitman by trade and a vampire. Life for Karl was on the simple side; until he met Maria. Then his past came back to haunt him and it got way more complicated. I'm not really a fan of stories involving the mob, but vampires are a whole other deal. Having said that, I ended up really loving this story. Karl has a bit of mystery to him, and dangerous. Calm, cool and sexy. The first couple chapters were a bit slow, but after that it moved along nicely. It's one of the better Urban Fantasy stories I've read this year. I can't wait to find out what happens in book two.

Score: 4 Stars

[Review] - The Fairest Star

Title: The Fairest Star
Author: David Field
Series: Friends & Enemies
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Year: 2008

Summary: In the Fairest Star, the third installment of the Friends and Enemies trilogy, the world of France of 1599 unfolds once more as one of ambition, love, hatred, religious war and prejudice. All these confront the central figures of the story, Tommy of the 21st century and Eloise of the 16th century. Tommy and Eloise are now both the hunters and the hunted as they blunder through the conflicts of Church and family in pursuit of the priest, Drogo, who has publicly confessed to the killing of Eloise’s mother, Eleonora of Narbonne.

The action flits between the 21st and the 16th centuries whose very different values create bewilderment and danger for both the hero and the heroine. Tommy is seen as a mouthpiece of the Devil as his mobile phone erupts into the year 1599; Eloise is seen as a witch as her pet rats, believed to have the gift of speech, threaten to condemn her to the stake. The book follows the pair as, attempting to flee from the clutches of the Inquisition, they pursue their quest for revenge on Drogo to a brutal but bittersweet end.

Thoughts: This is the the third book in a trilogy, so I jumped in at the end of this series. It was packed with lots of action, with pirates, & villians and a little bit of love too. The story moves back and forth between France 1599 and the present time. Although I really enjoyed this time-traveling story I found myself a bit lost and confused at times. If you think this is something you'll enjoy I suggest starting at the beginning of the trilogy with the first book: Friends and Enemies.

Hey Joss Whedon Fans....

Dollhouse with Eliza Dushku airs tonight. There are no vampires or sexy space cowboys waving guns around, but it's definitely something new and different. Being a fan of Joss Whedon I can't wait to see this. For those who have no clue about the show.... here's what it's about:

ECHO (Dushku) is an "Active," a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected, the Actives don't just perform their hired roles, they wholly become -- with mind, personality and physiology -- whomever the client wants or needs them to be. Whether imprinted to be a lover, an assassin, a corporate negotiator or a best friend, the Actives know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time.

Trade Paperback Shopping

I've had a list of Trade paperback books that I've wanted to get for a while now. I could probably get them through PBS, but the wait is just too long. I did a bit of a searching on what sites were charging for these books. And in opinion I hit the jackpot with Tower.com. I'm really loving this store right now. They had the lowest price on books. I got 5 books that ranged from $10.55 to 9.98. Shipping was free too. Here's what I got:

Midnight Sins- Cynthia Eden

Dirty- Megan Hart

Road Trip of the Living Dead- Mark Henry

The Vampire Shrink- Lynda Hilburn

The Bride of Casa Dracula- Marta Acosta

In the Land of Oz... (the kinky version)

I had previously read R.G Alexander's Regina In the Sun and really enjoyed and thought I'd give one of her another books a try. I found this book- Not In Kansas. It's m/m, which I don't usually read, but I thought why not give it a go. It turned out be quite an interesting novella, it was steamy and funny. What more can you ask for. The Wizard of Oz connection was great too. ;)

Book Description: Gliders and Wizards and Sex Droids… Oh My!

Kansas Frayne has everything he needs. Except a life—and love. A freak storm changes all that when it hurls him into the darkness. He wakes up to find he’s been thrust into a world of promiscuous and directionally challenged beings, sensually sentient water and servants created solely to fulfill any imaginable fantasy.
The sexuality he’s long denied is tested to its limits, especially when a darkly erotic wizard issues the ultimate challenge. If Kansas wants to go home, he must fulfill one task. Resist the allure of the unbearably beautiful king.

Sounds easy enough.

Until he gets a look at the golden monarch. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and Kansas quickly realizes this is a challenge he is doomed to fail. Yet he has to try.

Before he loses his heart.

[Review] - Night After Night

Title: Night After Night
Author: Kathryn Smith
Series: Brotherhood of the Blood
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance
Year: 2009

Summary: I am Temple, Guardian of the Blood Grail...

Centuries ago, this magnificent chalice sealed my fate as a vampire, and now I am its protector. Many have hunted me for it, but only Vivian has accomplished the task. Strong, lovely, haunted ... I am more attracted to her than I should be, yet her loyalty lies with a man determined to bring about my destruction. But I am not so easily locked in a cage, and now the captive has become the captor.

Though her stormy eyes tempt me, there is too much at stake – not merely my life, but the lives of my vampire Brotherhood. And I am not above using Vivian to achieve my goals, even if it means denying my own heart. The battle to end all battles is just beginning, and I must fight ... if I could only let my desire be damned."

Thoughts: This is the last installment in the Brotherhood of the Blood. I loved all the books in the series. The latest book is Temple's story. This series was originally recommended to me. From the first I was taken by the series, the time period and the history & myth of the vampires. I thought it was great that all 5 vampires came together finally. In every book you get the sense they are ever moving towards each other. This last book is a coming together, of vengeance and of course love. Although it was sad to see the series come to an end, I relished every minute. I even got a bit teary eyed at the end.
