[Review] - Need

Title: Need
Author: Carrie Jones
Series: Need
Genre: Young Adult
Year: 2009

Summary: Zara collects phobias the way other high school girls collect lipsticks. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

Thoughts: Since her stepfather died Zara has pretty much stopped living, so her mom sends her off to Maine to send some time with her grandmother. Hoping this will bring about some change. Once in Maine Zara sense things aren't all what they seem and eventually learns that she is being stalked.

From the get go I was enthralled with this book. Carrie Jones has done a beautiful job with setting up this eerie world and creating intriguing characters. Need draws you in and doesn't let go. Zara is dealing with pixies and not the nice kind you find in Disney movies. I found the stalking scenes to be believable and very creepy. It's been a while since a book spooked me, but I loved it. This story was intense, with both fantasy and romance elements.

[Review & Giveaway] - Bound to Shadows

Title: Bound to Shadows
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Riley Jenson Guardian
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Year: 2009

Summary: In the darkness, demons come out to play . . .
and someone must bring their sins to light.

Part vampire, part werewolf, Riley Jenson knows what can happen when vamps don’t play well with others. But she’s never seen anything like this: a series of brutal murders surrounding the latest hot spot for vampire-human hookups—and the victims aren’t just killed, they’re beheaded. Now Riley is launching into action, toying with a seductive—and highly suspicious—club owner, and finding herself in the middle of another mystery: women being killed one by one, without a trace of violence.

For Riley, solving multiple cases—in a world going mad with human and vampire passions—would have been tough enough. Instead she has two jealous lovers on her hands: Kye Murphy, the amber-eyed werewolf who makes Riley’s wolf blood howl—and Quinn, the cool, elegant vamp who has over a thousand years’ experience at fulfilling women’s desires. While she’s busy juggling these two sexy beasts, Riley’s detective work takes a stunningly violent turn. Finding a murderer is now a matter of life and death. Especially since the killer has long since found her . . .

Thoughts: Riley Jenson is part vampire & part werewolf. Her guardian duties having been keeping her busy, trying to solve several cases. If that isn't enough she also has two lovers to deal with. Life is never easy in Riley's world. But this time not finding the killer first could end in deathly consequences.

I read the first book in this series Full Moon Rising back in 2006 (which seems forever ago) and was instantly hooked. Riley is a strong, kick ass and likable heroine. One character I couldn't wait to read more about. Ms. Arthur has created an intriguing world with vampires, werewolves and other creatures that go bump in the night. Every book takes you on an adventure that is non stop action right until the end. Suspenseful, shocking and very sexy.

All these facts ring true in the 8th and latest book. I enjoyed it just as much as the previous books. I'd say Bound to Shadows is one of my favorite books in the series. The tone in this one remind me a little bit of the earlier books. The situations in this story really pushed Riley to the limit, both mentally and physically. I was very happy with the out come and can't wait get my hands on book 9. If you haven't read this series yet, I suggest giving it a try

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Amanda Grange

I'm happy to have Amanda Grange here to guest blog. She is the author of Mr. Darcy, Vampyre and Mr. Darcy's Diary guest blogging. Today she's here to talk about one of my favorite subjects, Vampires! Thanks, Amanda for stopping by!

Hi, Anna, and thanks for inviting me along to your book blog, it’s great to be here to talk about vampires. There have been so many great vampires over the centuries it’s hard to choose my favourites but I’m going to go for Dracula and Angel.

I’m choosing Dracula because both the book and the character were so revolutionary and they established a lot of the things we now associate with vampires, like garlic and crosses, some of which came from folk lore but some of which came from Bram Stoker’s own imagination. The book is full of atmosphere and that’s one of the things I love about traditional vampire tales, the rich atmospheric writing. Dracula himself is a complex character, he’s gruesome in many ways and yet he’s a man with a past. He’s known love and there is something tragically romantic about his story as well as horrifying. I created a character called Count Polidori in Mr. Darcy, Vampyre who has had an ill-fated love affair in his past, and there is an air of melancholy about him.

One of the things that appeals to me about vampires is that they are often at war with themselves, it gives their stories an epic feel and it’s one of the things that make them interesting for me. That’s probably why I love Angel, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so much. He’s a really complicated character. He’s a creature who is part human and a part of him longs to belong in the human world, but he is also an outsider. When he turns up at places like the Bronze, he’s always in the shadows, half hidden, never fully in the light.

I love this kind of duality, it’s the kind of duality Mr. Darcy has in Mr. Darcy, Vampyre. He lives in the world and yet he can never really belong in it because he’s so different.

It was in fact whilst watching Buffy that I first thought of Mr. Darcy as a vampyre. I think it was probably because Angel and Darcy are both so similar, they are both very attractive and yet at the same time they both hold back. They don’t throw themselves into life, and the idea just hit me, what if Darcy was aloof because, unbeknownst to anyone, he was a vampire? And what if it was his love for Elizabeth that made him want to cross the kind of no-man’s land between vampires and humans and embrace life to the full? How would that affect his relationship with her, loving her and yet knowing he had a terrible secret? And how would it affect her when she found out?

The idea took root in my imagination and over the years I kept thinking about it, turning different ideas over in my mind. But it wasn’t until I started re-reading some of the Gothic novels of Jane Austen’s time that I saw a way I could write a book that satisfied me. I saw that I could write a paranormal sequel to Pride and Prejudice which would take the characters away from their safe, ordinary world, by sending them on their honeymoon to France and Italy. There, in this new world, I could create another completely new reality for them. It’s part Austen, part vampire and a new journey, a new adventure for Elizabeth and Darcy.

So who are your favourite vampires. What is it that appeals to you about them, and why are they your favourites?

Mr. Darcy, Vampyre—In stores NOW!
Amanda Grange, bestselling author of Mr. Darcy's Diary, gives us something completely new—a delightfully thrilling, paranormal Pride and Prejudice sequel, full of danger, darkness and deep romantic love…

Amanda Grange's style and wit bring readers back to Jane Austen's timeless storytelling, but always from a very unique and unusual perspective, and now Grange is back with an exciting and completely new take on Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

Mr. Darcy, Vampyre starts where Pride and Prejudice ends and introduces a dark family curse so perfectly that the result is a delightfully thrilling, spine-chilling, breathtaking read. A dark, poignant and visionary continuation of Austen's beloved story, this tale is full of danger, darkness and immortal love.

[Promo] - Heart of the Witch

I discover this one in the December Issue of the RT Magazine. Looks really good. Plus with the reference to the Wizard of Oz, it makes me want to read it more so.

Release Date: November 24th

Book Summary:

There is a monster on the loose, a serial killer murdering young women near Oklahoma City. On each corpse he writes his name in blood:

THE TIN MAN

But while the villain claims to be heartless, he’s not beyond making a mistake. This time he left his prey alive, and ex-homicide detective Nick Lassiter plans to use her to crack the case wide open. Yet, Ravyn Skyler is nothing like he expects. She remembers little of the crime, and for a victim, she has a deep reserve of quiet strength. In her eyes he sees both helpless waif and merciless vigilante, and in her kiss he tastes both passion and power. With a tale of a tin man, it only seems fair that there’s a witch. And this witch guards a secret that threatens not only their lives, but their souls.

[Review/Giveaway] - Everything Sucks

Title: Everything Sucks
Author: Hannah Friedman
Genre: Young Adult/Memoir
Year: 2009

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: When everything sucks, change everything . . .
And that's exactly what Hannah Friedman set out to do in an ambitious attempt to bust out of a life of obscurity and absurdity and into an alternate world of glamour, wealth, and popularity.

Being dubbed 'That Monkey Girl' by middle school bullies and being pulled out of sixth grade to live on a tour bus with her agoraphobic mother, her smelly little brother, and her father's hippie band mates convinces Hannah that she is destined for a life of freakdom.

But when she enters one of the country's most prestigious boarding schools on scholarship, Hannah transforms herself into everything she is not: cool. By senior year, she has a perfect millionaire boyfriend, a perfect GPA, a perfect designer wardrobe, and is part of the most popular clique in school, but somehow everything begins to suck far worse than when she first started. Her new found costly drug habit, eating disorder, identity crisis, and Queen-Bee attitude lead to the unraveling of Hannah's very unusual life.

Putting her life back together will take more than a few clicks of her heels, or the perfect fit of a glass slipper, in this not-so-fairy tale of going from rock bottom to head of the class and back again.

Thoughts: This is one of the most brutally honest memoirs I've read. We all know that High School sucks, and Hannah really tells it like it is. I loved the fact how honest this book was. Hannah has a wonderful writing voice. She is honest, funny and holds nothing back. She talks about everything she went through from Drugs, her eating disorder to having to deal with a monkey for a sister. I look forward to read more of her writing.

[Series Spotlight] - The Mortal Instruments

I recently finished reading this series and loved it. Very addicting. If your looking for something new and different this would be the series. Today I saw an ad for the series and it had this quote attached to it that I just love:

"Dear Edward and Jacob:
I adore you both. But I'm
spending the weekend
with Jace. Sorry!"
-Stephenie Meyer
Author of Twilight

Book 1 Summary:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing — not even a smear of blood — to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Book 2 Summary:

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, new found brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

Book 3 Summary:

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters — never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and her best friend, Simon, has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City — whatever the cost?

[Review] - Fire

Title: Fire
Author: Kristin Cashore
Genre: Young Adult
Year: 2009

Summary: It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. The young King Nash clings to his throne while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. The mountains and forests are filled with spies and thieves and lawless men.

This is where Fire lives. With a wild, irresistible appearance and hair the color of flame, Fire is the last remaining human monster. Equally hated and adored, she has the unique ability to control minds, but she guards her power, unwilling to steal the secrets of innocent people. Especially when she has so many of her own.

Then Prince Brigan comes to bring her to King City. The royal family needs her help to uncover the plot against the king. Far away from home, Fire begins to realize there's more to her power than she ever dreamed. Her power could save the kingdom.

If only she weren't afraid of becoming the monster her father was.

Thoughts: Over the mountains across from Graceling is the land of Dells. It is an enchanting, wild land that is inhabited by humans and monsters. This is Fire's home. She is the last human monster. Beyond beautiful, she stops people in her tracks with her perfect skin and red flamed hair. She has the ability to sneak into people's minds. A talent that scares her more each day. When the royal family calls on her help. She goes against her own rule, to help save the kingdom and the people she loves.

I love this book and had a hard time putting it down, very much a page turner. I fell in love with Graceling and now Fire. Ms. Cashore has created two different worlds that are amazing and wondrous, that take you on a fantastic journey. The character Fire pulls you in with her beauty and her strength, she's a very lovable character. Fire is an adventure filled with intrigue, acceptance and love. This book is not to be missed.

Fire is a companion/prequel to Graceling, but there's no reading order. You don't need to read Graceling to enjoy Fire.

[Review] - Soft As Moonlight

Title: Soft As Moonlight
Author: J.A. Saare
Genre: Erotic/Paranormal Romance
Year: 2009

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: Lycae Wolfe Trevlian returns to New Orleans after a lengthy self imposed absence with one goal – to appease the vampyren harboring a grudge against his kin so he can leave as soon as possible. Bitter memories linger in the Big Easy, memories best left in the past. Fortunately, the agreement with the vampyren is simple – destroy the creature killing off their brethren, and the death of their Master is forgiven.

Dhampir Arden Moran has waited two decades to avenge the murder of her friend by destroying the vampyren King Lucius Mercoix, and years of dedication and patience are about to pay off. She tracks down the human slave to the King, intending to uncover where Lucius rests. There is just one enormous problem she wasn't prepared for – the breathtakingly gorgeous Lycae sent to intercept her.

One touch is all it takes for Wolfe to ascertain that Arden is his mate, and he vows to kill anyone or anything that attempts to harm the beautiful half-human, half-vampire female. When the vampyren hire assassins to finish the job he didn't complete, he is forced to face and overcome the devastating scars of a past betrayal in order to become an Alpha Lycae strong enough to protect his mate - as well as the pack that needs him.

Thoughts: Lycae Wolfe Trevalian has just arrived to New Orleans after a long absence. he is ordered by the vampyren to kill the gulity party who is killing their people. If he doesn't it will mean war between the Vampyren and Lycae. When Wolfe finds the culpit, Arden Moran he never expects to find his mate.

Soft As Moonlight is interesting and an action packed story. Sexy scenes that will get your heart going. Arden is resistant of Wolfe's claim, cause she is bent on taking revenge on the vamypren who killed her friend. But Wolfe becomes hard to resist with his good looks and sexy charm. A bit more dark than the last story I read by Ms. Saare, but all in all I found both the story and characters entertaining.

Interview/Giveaway with Amelia Grey

Today I have Amelia Grey, author of The Rogues' Dynasty series here, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! Glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?

Thank you, Anna, I’m happy to be here today on your fabulous site, and delighted to tell you a little about myself. I’ve been writing for several years now and have published books under two other names. For the past eight years I’ve been writing Regency historical as Amelia Grey, and I am having so much fun writing books as Amelia! I am absolutely fascinated by the Regency time period and all its trappings. I’m excited to get up in the mornings and get to the computer. I absolutely love being a romance author.

A Marquis To Marry is your newest release so can you tell us a little about it and the series?

I would love to tell you a little about A Marquis To Marry which is the second book in The Rogues’ Dynasty Series. It’s an October release and is currently on sale wherever books are sold. In A Marquis To Marry, the hero is a fun-loving rogue and very happily a bachelor, so I decided I had to give him a beautiful, fascinating woman who had the power, charm, and wit to make him want to settle down to just one lady. For enjoyment and fun, I had him in possession of a priceless necklace of pearls that belonged to her family, and then for intrigue I had them stolen.

The first book of The Rogues’ Dynasty series is A Duke To Die For. It came out in April 2009, but it is still available at your favorite local or online bookstore. In A Duke To Die For, the hero’s life is chaotic and undisciplined, so I gave him a young and innocent heroine who was timely and organized to get under his skin and stay there. For fun I had her believe she was cursed, and for intrigue I had him be in danger because of it.

An Earl to Enchant is the third book of the series and will be published in April 2010. In An Earl To Enchant, the hero is a planner who plays by the rules and has no idea what to do with an enchanting heroine who ignores convention and steals his heart with her impulsive ways. For merriment, I have the heroine pursuing the hero, and for intrigue I have a killer pursuing her.

When did you start writing? How did you decide what to write, did you have a moment where you said "yep Historical Romance is for me" Have you ever thought about writing a different genre/ or sub-genre? If so what would it be?

I started writing twenty years ago, and I have to say that I’ve never wanted to write anything else. It’s always been romance for me. There was a time when I tried my hand at contemporary, and I had one book published by Harlequin a few years ago. And then about three or four years ago I tried my hand at a nonfiction book but I decided to put that book away for another time. I’ve published nineteen historical books and one contemporary so I think it’s fair to say that my heart has always been in historical.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read? Do you have any favorite authors that are must reads?

I do enjoy reading and I read a variety of books. I just finished The Adventure Cookbook about a young lady who went on a six year self-finding journey all over the world and in each place found new recipes that helps her live a healthy life. The book I’m reading now is The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer. But I also enjoy inspirational and self help books on how to live life better. Two authors I always read are Sandra Brown and Amanda Quick.

How much research do you put into each book you write? Do you have a process you stick with?

The good thing about writing in one time period such as the Regency for more than one book is that a lot of the research is done before the first book begins. But that said, I assure you that I continue to read about the time period and books set in the Regency period because there is so much to learn. I’m constantly looking for answers to questions and I’m happy to say I have a friend who has published more than twenty Traditional Regencies and she has been an immense help to me. It is easy to get tripped up on words that were not used in the time period or little known historical facts.

Who are some of your favorite historical characters?

I’m going to assume you mean real people. I’m also going to use the word fascinating rather than favorite characters. I’m happy you asked this question because I’ve been watching The Tudors, and I am totally fascinated by Henry VIII. Not as a hero, but as the most spoiled, selfish brat I could ever imagine. I can look at his life and say, “You can’t make this stuff up. No one would believe you.” And then a few years ago I read Son Of The Morning Star by Evan O’Connell. This is an extremely good and detailed account of the Battle of Little Bighorn and a fairly good analysis of General Custer. I just shake my head and say, “What was he thinking?” I’ve also been fascinated after reading books on Benedict Arnold and John Andre as well as Sacagawea, the Indian woman who was a guide for Lewis and Clark. I have loved reading about all these people and way too many more to list here.

How did you come up with the idea for The Rogue Dynasty Series? Did any real life people inspire any of the characters?

I wasn’t inspired by any particular person for any of the characters in The Rogues’ Dynasty. I knew I wanted three handsome, sexy men connected in some way, so I gave them a grandmother who influenced their lives, and the hero in each book deals with his grandmother’s legacy in his own way. I knew I wanted all the heroes to be titled so I had to make the cousins rather than brothers. I had to give each hero different character traits and different human faults, and then I had to give each one a heroine that complimented them.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a new book?

First I must have my costume book. I often write about how my characters are dressed, and I love to look at pictures and describe the clothing.

Second I must have Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (mine is the 10th edition) so I can check to see if a word was in use in the Regency. I have to admit that I sometimes I still make mistakes, but usually my editor and or the copy editor will catch it before the book goes to print.

And third I must have water on my desk. Every time I have to stop and think, I take a sip.

What is up next? If you can, tell us a little about your next project.

I have just signed to write three more books in The Rogues’ Dynasty Series! I would love to tell you about my next project, but I can’t say too much about it right now. Not because I want to sound mysterious, but I can’t tell you where the next three rogues are coming from because that would spoil a very important part of the third book in the series which is An Earl To Enchant and will be out April 2010. I do hope you will have me back next April to tell you all about that. And thank you once again for having me here today!

Thanks again Amelia for stopping by. I look forward to having you back again next April when An Earl To Enchant is released.

[Review] - Seduced By Magic

Title: Seduced By Magic
Author: Stephanie Julian
Series: Magical Seduction
Genre: Erotic Fantasy
Year: 2008

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: Justin Johannson knows there are mythical creatures living among us. After all, he has been trying to prove their existence for ten years. Research gets a whole lot more interesting when he finds a winged woman in his bed and his sexual fantasies come to life.

Etruscan folletta Scarlata is convinced Justin is in league with an evil businessman bent on capturing her for scientific study, which is so not going to happen. She decides that Justin needs to be taught a lesson to leave her and the rest of the mythical creatures in peace — but before, she might just have a little fun of her own.

The beautiful folletta never expected to fall for a human and Justin is about to discover that true magic really does exist in the world. And in him.

Thoughts: Justin has been trying to prove the existence of mythical creatures for years. One night he discovers a winged women- Scarlata - in his bed. His fantasy come true but Scarlata who is a Folletta, a race of Etrusean Fata believes he has evil intentions. So, to begin with her plan and his don't exactly mesh.

Seduced by Magic is a fun enjoyable story. The mixture of fantasy, magic and the erotic is just right. A delectable and steamy read. I really liked the heroine Scarlata. Stephanie Julian is created an intriguing world. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Linda Wisdom

Today Linda Wisdom is here guest blogging. This year she's is celebrating her 30th Anniversary as a published romance author. Congrats Linda and Thanks for stopping by!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many thanks to Anna’s Book Blog for having me here to talk about my years as an author.
Once upon a time there was a little girl who knew she wanted to write books. She wrote stories all through her school years and only took a short break when she was first married. After a few years she knew she wanted to write again and decided it was time to return to her writing.
It took some time, change of name and locations, using her ballet class for atmosphere for her first book, but the time came when that book was finished and she immediately began a second book. Once it was finished, both books were sent to a brand new category romance line called Silhouette Books and they were immediately contracted. A more than fitting date for ‘the call’ was that her books, Dancer in the Shadows and 14 Karat Beauty sold on her wedding anniversary.
And that was just the beginning for me. Did I scream when my agent told me Silhouette wanted my books? Yes. In fact, I’m sure the whole office building heard me. I was even asked if I wanted to write under my own name or use a pseudonym. I knew I wanted my name on my books.
And barely two months later I was fired for selling the books. I wasn’t upset about it. I saw it as my chance to see if writing would turn into the career I wanted it to. I always figured I had my ex-boss to thank for where I am today.
I felt such joy when I received flats of my book. It was that first step of becoming real. But the true step was the first time I went into a store and saw MY book on the shelves! I did the Snoopy dance and told everyone “that’s my book!” I was so pleased to see my fruit of my labor there and to know people would buy it. True, I hoped people would buy it, and luckily they did. I’d achieved a dream I’d had since the day I could hold a crayon and print words.
Of course, back then in the Dark Ages, I used an IBM Correcting Selectric, and used the phone and mail system for communication. I didn’t know another author and I’m sure I stumbled a lot. I didn’t meet other authors until I attended the first Romance Writers of America Nationals conference and I knew I was among people who’d understand me. Talk about a rush!
I think one of my funniest memories from back then was while I loved saying “I’m a writer”, my mom would murmur “honey, that sounds like bragging.” My husband just teased he was Mr. Linda Wisdom. Then one day my mom and I were having lunch out and she looked across the restaurant and saw a woman reading my book. Mom was up like a flash and over to the woman with “My daughter wrote that book. Would you like her to sign it for you?” Would you really tell a writer’s mom you might not want it signed? :} My dad was great at handing out bookmarks where he worked and my husband got a lot of teasing for his back problems.
All I knew was that I was doing what I truly loved. I could draw on past experiences and even used my single friends’ bad dates. Trust me, they gave me some fun ones too.
Who knew taking a ballet class would give me the idea for a book that would start it all for me? And that it would start me on a path to writing over 80 books.
It’s been a roller coaster ride, literally filled with ups and downs. I’ve made a lot of good friends along the way, met some incredible people, and wrote a variety of books that I’m very proud of.
Dancer in the Shadows still makes the rounds. In fact, an agent in Japan contacted my agent because a comic book publisher was interested in contracting for that book and others in my backlist to be comic books and mobile downloads.
So the nice thing is, that first book isn’t forgotten. What about you? How long have you been a romance reader and do you remember your first romance book?
Linda
Guest Blog & Giveaway with Kylie Brant
I'm happy to announce that I have Romantic Suspense author, Kylie Brant here as a guest today. Her newest series The Mindhunters debuted on September 1st with the release of Waking Nightmare. Book 2, Waking Evil comes out today (October 6th) and will be followed by Waking the Dead on November 3rd.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have a confession to make. I’m not a true paranormal reader. I admire the authors who can create other worlds and populate them with furry or fanged creatures they then make us care about. But my feet have always been too firmly rooted to the ground to suspend disbelief for long. I’m not sure what it says about me that I find it far easier to believe in serial killers and crazed criminals than in vampires and werewolves, but there you go.

There is a similarity between dark romantic thrillers and paranormals, however. Both have our hero and heroine fighting evil to save the world, or at least their part of it. And in doing so they overcome obstacles and fall in love. Which isn’t bad for a week or two’s work, any way you look at it! But the evil in my books most often takes on an all too human form.

I do love sprinkling hints of the paranormal in my stories. I’m fascinated by psychic phenomena, which keeps me watching Medium week after week despite Patricia Arquette’s acting ability, or lack thereof. There are no psychics in my newest release, but there is a hint of the supernatural.

Book 2 of The Mindhunters series hit the shelves Oct. 6. Each book in the back to back trilogy features a different investigator from a private forensics firm, headed by the legendary ex-FBI profiler, Adam Raiker. In Waking Evil, the heroine, Ramsey Clark, is a no nonsense investigator hired by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to help with a murder case in a small rural town. Ramsey believes in evidence, not superstition, so she’s not happy to find renowned parapsychologist Devlin Stryker dogging her steps at every turn.

And Devlin…well he’s got charm to spare, an admirable intellect, and an open mind. He’s exposed a lot of supernatural hoaxes, but has seen a few things in his career that can’t be explained away by science or pranks. One of the hardest things he’s ever done is to try convince Ramsey the local century old curse might have something to do with her murder victim.

Ramsey doesn’t want to hear about the red mist that appears over the town every generation, or the murders that follow its appearance in threes. But she is willing to admit the legend just might be playing a part in the crime as she tries to figure out if a killer is playing on everyone’s fears or if a prophecy is being fulfilled—one victim at a time.

The best part of researching this story was delving into parapsychology and tools of the trade. I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts. But I wouldn’t be above using an EMF meter, thermal scanner, and night vision video light in a place reputed to be haunted, as long as I had plenty of company. Did I mention I’m a huge coward?

How about you? If you had a chance to accompany a ghost hunter some night, would you go? Have you had a paranormal experience that made you a believer? Or maybe you’ve traveled somewhere that’s haunted? I’d love to hear about it!

Check out my website at http://www.kyliebrant.com for more on Waking Evil, and the other two books in the series, Waking Nightmare and Waking the Dead.
