[Review] - Break

Title: Break
Author:
Tarra Blaize
Series:
Angels and Demons
Genre:
Paranormal Romance/Erotica
Release Date:
May 25, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: Don’t bother looking for trouble. It’ll find you.

Layla Roads’ life is a laundry list of irony. Trailer trash. High school dropout. Beautiful liar. Highly skilled computer hacker. And one additional, extraordinary gift: the ability to see the demons and angels engaged in a ferocious battle on the urban streets at night.
When kidnappers hold her brother, Layla finds herself up to her neck in a plot to bring down a powerful blood demon. A crude, sexual, violent demon who kills without flinching, pushes her buttons, and looks at her with too-knowing eyes. What’s worse is she feels an answering tug of desire.

It doesn’t take Gethin long to figure out he has a pretty traitor on his hands—and that she’s being blackmailed. As a lone human female her quest to save her brother is hopeless—just like the attraction between them. For even if Gethin helps her save all she holds dear, she can never be his…

Warning: Includes a devilish demon, a heroine caught between a rock and a hard place, several magical battles, and the steamy backseat of a car.

Thoughts: Layla lives on the cusp of danger. She has a gift - the ability to see angels and demons. One demon in particular has taken over her workspace- the delicious Gethin. Although she resists, Layla is very attracted to Gethin. But the fact is her brother has been kidnapped and Gethin might be her only hope at getting him back.

This was a fun read. I loved Gethin, he was a great character. Layla was wonderful as lead too. But Gethin really pulled me in. He's very wicked and that was hard resist. Break has a lot of fast action and was a steamy good read. Ms. Blaize has created a dark and enticing story, I look forward to reading her future releases.

[ARC Review] - Strange Neighbors

Title: Strange Neighbors
Author: Ashlyn Chase
Series: Strange Neighbors
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: He's just looking for peace, quiet and a little romance...

Hunky all-star pitcher and shapeshifter Jason Falco buys an old Boston brownstone apartment building as an investment. But when Merry MacKenzie moves into the ground floor apartment, the playboy pitcher decides he might just be done playing the field.

On her own for the first time, she just wants to have fun...

Jason seems like the perfect fling, but sexy nurse Merry's not sure she's ready to trust him with her heart...especially when the tabloids start trumpeting his playboy lifestyle.

Then pandemonium breaks loose when the vampire who lives in the basement and the werewolf from upstairs join forces to make it almost impossible for Merry and Jason to get together.

Thoughts: Merry has just moved out on her own for the first time. She loves her new townhouse apartment. Her new landlord Jason is very easy on the eyes. Jason himself hopes to snag some alone time with his new tenant. But throw in a vampire, a werewolf, a ghost, two witches and a nosy aunt and craziness is bound to ensue.

I loved the premises of this book. Paranormal creatures as neighbors- talk about never having a dull moment. Strange Neighbors was a light enticing read. Funny, romantic with healthy dose of the paranormal. This story had an entertaining cast of characters. The ending was one of my favorite parts and I don't mean that in a bad way, I just thought Jason and Merry's HEA was really sweet and the perfect ending.

[ARC Review] - The Wolf Next Door

Title: The Wolf Next Door
Author: Lydia Dare
Series: Westfield Brothers
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: THEY CAN'T EVEN BE IN THE SAME ROOM TOGETHER...

Ever Since their failed elopement years ago, Prisca Hawthorne has taunted, insulted and in every way tried to push him away. If only her heart didn't break every time Lord William Westfield left her...

BUT STAYING APART IS EVEN WORSE...

Lord William throws himself into drinking gambling and debauchery and pretends not to care about Prisca at all. But when he returns to find a rival werewolf vying for her hand, he'll stop at nothing to claim the women who should have been his all along.

Can Prisca forgive the unforgivable, or are the moon-crossed lovers going to be forced into a battle of wills that could be fatal.

Thoughts: Years ago an incident occurred resulting in a failed elopement. Ever since Will & Prisca have been at each other's throats -- even though they were still very much in love with each other. Not that either of them would admit it. But when another werewolf takes an interest in Prisca, Will is determined to do anything to finally make Prisca his for good.

When Will & Prisca appear on the pages of A Certain Wolfish Charm bickering and taunting each other I knew this was gonna be a very interesting story. Both of them are wonderful characters but they are very stubborn. If just one of them would give in they could have been together a long time ago.

The Wolf Next Door was a delightful read. Will and Prisca's chemistry is on fire. Sparks fly when these two are in the same room. This latest Westfield story was funny and romantic and a joy to read. As a whole I'm loving this series, each book sucks you in from the first page to the last. If you've enjoyed the first two books or just looking for something fun to read. I highly recommend this book.

Score: 4 Stars.

[ARC Review] - My Name Is Memory

Title: My Name Is Memory
Author: Ann Brashares
Genre: Fiction/Fantasy
Release Date: June 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Riverhead Books/Penguin.

Summary: The story of a love that lasts more than a lifetime.

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory" the ability to recall past lives and recognize the souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully fatally part. A love always to short.

But just as Sophia (reborn as "Lucy") finally begins to awaken to the secret of the shared past, the mysterious force that has always wrenched them apart reappears, Ultimately, they must recognize what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.

Thoughts: Daniel has lived over a thousand years - always falling in love with the same woman, Sophia. But tragedy always strikes and rips them apart. Through all of it though Daniel always remembers. Always retaining the memory of their time together- through the centuries. In the present day he has found her again, but to truly be together they need to find the who or what that keeps forcing them to part.

As much heartache that there was in this story, I loved it. Daniel and Sophie's story spans from 541 to 2009. Very much an epic love story. I liked that each chapter went back and forth between the years. It gave great insight to both characters.

My Name Is Memory was a beautiful story and at the same time heartbreaking, I had a hard time putting this one down. For me this was one strong story of love, heartache and revenge. A wonderful read and one I recommend. I'm not a fan of the ending but I heard that this is the first book in a trilogy. If that is true the cliffhanger ending isn't so bad.

[Review] - Moon Sworn

Title: Moon Sworn
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Riley Jenson Guardian
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: May 25, 2010

I received this book from review from Random House.

Summary: Some nights never end. Some desires never die. . . .

Shape-shifting werewolf and vampire Riley Jenson is through with death–causing it, solving it, surviving it. Her soul mate, Kye Murphy, is dead–and at Riley’s own hands. Not even the seductive embrace of her vampire lover, Quinn, can fully ease her mind, for she has begun questioning everything that makes her Riley–including her job at the Directorate.

Now, the ritualistically slain bodies of ex-cons have started turning up. Reluctantly, Riley takes the case, but something even worse is waiting in the wings. For a vicious enemy from her past is determined to strip Riley of everything that gives her life any meaning: her lover, her brother–and even her own identity. Can Riley survive this ultimate assault? All she knows is, she must fight one last time to find answers, before everything goes dark forever…

Thoughts: Riley Jenson is a very strong person both body and soul. But the recent events in her life have shaken her and she is beginning to doubt everything and knows things have got to change. She takes a new case to work on even though she is sick of killing. This time its very important that she keep her wits about her, an old enemy has come back and she's in more danger than she imagined.

This is the 9th and last book of the Riley Jenson series. This is one of my favorite series so I'm sad to see it end, but very satisfied with the way things ended. Riley hasn't had a lot of happy, so If anyone deserves a little happiness it's her. I loved this story, it was a great way to end the series. Moon Sworn was a fast paced emotional ride to fill the senses. Darkly intense, suspenseful and as always very sexy.

[ARC Review] - Glimmerglass

Title: Glimmerglass
Author: Jenna Black
Series: Faeriewalker
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: May 25, 2010

I received this book for review from St. Martin's Press, through Library Thing's Early Reviewers program.

Summary: Dana Hathaway doesn't know it yet, but she's in big trouble. When her mother, an alcoholic, shows up at her voice recital drunk, Dana decides she's had it with playing the role of her mother's keeper, so she packs her bags and travels to see her mysterious father in Avalon: the only place on Earth where the regular, everyday world and the magical world of Faerie intersect.

Dana is a Faeriewalker, a rare individual who can travel between both worlds. She has always known that her father is a big-deal Fae, but what she doesn't realize is that she could be the key to his rise in power. When she arrives in Avalon, Dana finds herself a pawn in the game of magical politics. Avalon is a place where both magic and technology work, and humans and Fae coexist in something resembling peace. How can she change the winds of fate, find a boyfriend, and make new friends when she's not sure who, if anyone, can be trusted?

Thoughts: Avalon is a place where the modern world mingle and coexist with Fae. Dana is through with being the parent to her mother. So she runs away to Avalon to visit her fae father who she has never met. She strongly feels it's gotta be better than the way she's living now, but sadly she has no clue what she's walking into.

I thought this was a fantastic story. I really enjoy fae stories- always unique and a departure from vampire novels. Now I haven't liked every fae story I've read ... but this one really worked for me. Dana is an exciting character. From the moment she steps into Avalon she's tossed into a messed up situation. She feels lost, and not sure what she is being is told the truth or who she can trust. But by the end of her adventure she comes out a stronger person.

Glimmerglass is a spellbinding ride to the very end. The author has created a faerie world shrouded in danger and intrigue. Avalon is home to both humans and fae. A very tempting place, readers will want to keep coming back. I'm eager to see what is next for Dana. This is Jenna Black's first YA novel, I believe she will be welcomed with open arms.

[Review] - Blood Born

Title: Blood Born
Author: Linda Howard & Linda Jones
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: April 27, 2010

I received this book for review from Random House.

Summary: When the human and the vampire worlds collide
Luca Ambrus is a rare breed: He is a vampire from birth, begotten by vampire parents: blood born. He is also an agent of the Council—the centuries-old cabal that governs vampirekind, preserving their secrecy and destroying those who betray them.

When a cryptic summons leads him to the scene of the brutal killing of a powerful Council member, Luca begins the hunt for an assassin among his own people. But instead of a lone killer he discovers a sinister conspiracy of rogue vampires bent on subjugating the mortal world.

All that stands in their way are the conduits, humans able to channel spirit warriors into the physical world to protect mankind. Chloe Fallon is a conduit—and a target of the vampire assassin who’s killing them. When Luca saves her life, an irresistible bond of trust—along with more passionate feelings—is forged between them. As more victims fall, Chloe and Luca have only each other to depend on to save the world from the reign of monsters—and salvage their own future together.

Thoughts: A war is brewing. Vampires, Warriors and humans will all play a roll. Luca is blood born meaning he was born from two vampires. He works as the assassin of the Vampire Council. When the Council leader calls telling him to come in there is trouble is on it's way, he never thought that it would lead him straight to Chloe Fallon.

While I had heard of both Linda Howard and Linda Jones, they were still new authors to me. So I was excited to read this one and see what their take on vampires was like. I wasn't let down. The world building was pretty amazing. Besides Luca & Chloe there are few other story lines going on in this book.

Blood Born was an intense thrill ride, filled with drama and danger. I really liked the character of Luca. He's sexy, commanding and very tempting. Everything you like to find in a vampire. This was a good read. There were a few spots that were a bit slow for me, but other than that this book was fast, and action packed.

Score: 4 Stars.

Guest Blog with Helen Ellis

A big warm welcome to Helen Ellis, my blog is the latest stop on her Blog Tour, to celebrate her new release The Turning: What Curiosity Kills.

My Inner Kitty
By: Helen Ellis

Human that I am, I very happily domesticated, but if I were a cat, I’d be a stray. The breed isn’t so important. If I lived on the streets, it wouldn’t matter what color my coat was (milk chocolate like a Havana Brown), how big I was (the biggest like a Maine Coon) or how light I was on my feet (the best jumpers are Norwegian Forest cats).
What would matter would be my bravery. It takes a lot of courage to take care of yourself and make up your rules.

In What Curiosity Kills, “the turning” affects Mary and those like her for only five years. Some turns try and suppress it, while others embrace the change and literally run wild. When you turn, you are self-serving, self-indulgent, and never sorry. Domestics keep their instincts in check, but strays revel in their prowess. They belong to no one. They go where they want, do what they want, and express whatever is on their minds. They YOWL. But New York City strays have to stay out of the light of discovery or else be disposed of by Animal Control.

In Greece, where my husband’s family is from, stray cats are more common than birds. You cannot eat a meal outside—no matter how fancy the restaurant—without the company of a stray cat. Or several. And you will feed them. Greek strays roam the Athens sidewalks and narrowest streets of the tiniest of islands. They rule. Theirs is a sunbathing, shade-sleeping, coddled kind of life. So a Greek stray life would be the one for me.

The Turning: What Curiosity Kills
By: Helen Ellis

Out Now

Mary Richards is a normal sixteen-year-old girl living in Manhattan. Well, almost normal. She goes to private school on the Upper East Side, having been saved from a life of squalor by an adoptive family. But she’s also slowly transforming into a cat.

Struggling to hide her physical metamorphosis, Mary discovers that she isn’t alone. A whole race of cat people prowls the streets of Manhattan at night, including Mary’s long-time crush, Nick.

Aside from heightened feline senses, hanging out with Nick is the best thing about discovering her inner kitty. But Mary’s transformation is special and could decide the outcome of a citywide turf war. She must decide whether to embrace her powerful feline side and become a pack leader or go back to being a normal teenage girl. Can she land on her feet or will curiosity be her downfall?

[Review] - My Avenging Angel

Title: My Avenging Angel
Author: Madelyn Ford
Series: Angels & Demons
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Erotica
Release Date: May 25, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: To save her life, he must break a covenant -- and lose his heart.

It's Victoria Bloom's twenty-fifth birthday. But is she out celebrating? Oh, no. She's in a stuffy old attic with the Three Stooges-a.k.a. her so-called spirit guides. There's a demon who wants her dead, the same one that killed her mother two decades ago. No worries, say the Stooges. All she has to do is summon an angel. What could go wrong?

Well, plenty when you summon the wrong angel. The next thing Tory knows, she's got one very bad-ass, pissed-off and sexy Archangel on her hands.

Michael, mighty warrior, leader of an elite team of demon killers, is shaking in his heavenly combat boots. Not because he finds all humans distasteful. But because he'd rather face Lucifer himself than the woman his soul has just recognized as his mate. Binding himself to a mortal, one who will eventually die, is the one path he's sworn never to follow.

It's too late now; his fate is sealed. With one touch, she becomes as necessary to him as the air he breathes. He will move heaven and earth to protect her-but against a demon as powerful as Asmodeus, heaven and earth may not be enough...

Warning: This book contains one bad-ass Archangel with a fiery, um, sword, a witch who blows things up, one nasty demon who is trying to kill them both, and ghosts who make interfering their mission. Steamy sex is had, even with the voyeur ghosts-though Tory is still blushing.

Thoughts: This was a good read. I love angel and demons stories. The prologue was quite dark and violent - but it pulled me in and was the perfect beginning. Tory and Michael come together quite fast, I think some readers might feel this was rushed. But I thought it made sense and felt right. My Avenging Angel is a dark and delicious tale. A story of good vs. evil. This novella was fast paced and an enjoyable read with heat filled scenes.

[Review] - Nancy's Theory of Style

Title: Nancy's Theory of Style
Author: Grace Coppersmith
Genre: Romance/Chick-Lit
Release Date: May 18, 2010

I received this book for review from Simon and Schuster.

Summary: Lively young socialite Nancy Carrington-Chambers has always believed an excellent sense of style and strict attention to detail are what it takes to succeed, but her own husband Todd is showing symptoms of incurable tackiness, so Nancy flees their McMansion for her posh San Francisco apartment. She knows her event planning company, Froth, is a real winner, but she must prove herself by reinventing the turgid Barbary Coast Historical Museum fundraiser. Luckily, Nancy now has the perfect assistant. Derek Cathcart is British, impeccably dressed, gorgeous, and clearly gay—so why does Nancy find him so attractive?

Before Nancy can unravel her feelings, her irresponsible cousin Birdie abandons her little daughter with Nancy and takes off. Nancy, Derek, and Eugenia make an unlikely “family,” but strangely it seems incredibly right. Now Nancy’s parents are pressuring her to return to Todd, and she still has to pull off a spectacular party. For someone who’s always known exactly where she’s going, Nancy is in dangerously uncharted waters.

Thoughts: If someone asked Nancy about her life- she'd say it was perfect. Perfect marriage, perfect husband, perfect friends- perfect everything. Now Nancy she's a planner and a very good one too. She can turn a boring event into the party of the year. But what she didn't plan on was for her life to take a total left turn.

If your a fan of Marta Acosta's Casa Dracula you'll recognize Nancy as Milagro's ever fashionable friend. Honestly I've never been a fan of Nancy's she just didn't seem like a very good friend, so I was a bit leery about reading this book.

Nancy lives in her own world and says whatever she likes even if it's a bit rude at times. But I learned that she is quite funny and can be very charming. Having her world turned upside definitely did her some good. I'm glad I gave this book a chance, by the end of the book I love the person Nancy becomes. She's still the ever fabulous chick, but with a bigger heart and a different look on life.

Nancy's Theory of Style was a fun story to read. I thought this book would be a bit out of my comfort zone, but I ended up really enjoying the story. It was funny, romantic, surprising and highly entertaining. This is gonna be a fun read for any romance fan out there.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Grace Coopersmith

I'm exciting to introduce and welcome Grace Coopersmith. Who some of you may know as Marta Acosta, author of the Casa Dracula series. Grace is here today to talk about her debut novel Nancy's Theory of Style. Welcome Grace!!

I’m thrilled that my new romantic comedy, Nancy’s Theory of Style, is coming out on May 18. I’m writing this book under my pen name, Grace Coopersmith, and I have a funny paranormal series, Casa Dracula, under my own name, Marta Acosta. Nancy Carrington-Chambers first appears in my Casa Dracula books as a pretty, wealthy, style-conscious society girl with an eccentric way of speaking and a stubborn streak.

When my editor suggested that I write a book featuring Nancy, I jumped at the chance. Some characters come to me whole, and Nancy is one of those. I can see her in my mind’s eye: she’s petite, chic, with blonde curly hair and she looks like “a grown-up version of the cutest kid in kindergarten.” She says things like, “Good taste is not style,” and “Leopard print is a timeless classic.”

Nancy married her equally privileged college boyfriend, Todd, and they’ve built a house together far out in the suburbs. She thought it would be her dream house, but Todd’s gone behind her back with the contractor and turned it into what Nancy calls the House of Horrors. When she can’t take anymore, she separates temporarily from Todd and returns to her bachelorette apartment in posh Pacific Heights.

She hires a gorgeous, impeccably dressed, British assistant, Derek, to help her resurrect the city’s most exclusive and dreariest fundraiser. She thinks Derek’s perfect and, because he’s gay, she is more honest with him than she’s been with any man before. Things are going wonderfully when Nancy’s irresponsible cousin abandons her four-year-old in Nancy’s care. But the socialite, the assistant, and the child manage to a family of sorts.

Nancy’s snobbery and desire to preserve appearances cause her to make terrible mistakes, and her world comes crashing down. Does she have the strength to lose everything she’s believed is important in order to protect those she’s come to love?

Readers have said that Nancy’s the girl you love to hate. She’s had all the advantages in life and thinks she deserves them. I thought she seemed tremendously fun, the sort of girl you’d like despite yourself. You’d begin to see that she’s not as lucky as you first assumed. Eventually you’d come to fall for her and root for her to make the right decisions, to take the chance because, as Nancy says, real style takes risks.

I hope you’ll give Nancy and my new novel a chance! Please add it to your summer reads.

[Review] - Edge of Moonlight

Title: Edge of Moonlight
Author: Stephanie Julian
Series: Lucani Lovers
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Erotica
Release Date: May 7, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: Etruscan wolf shifter Kaine Giliati has longed for John Simmons since he willingly agreed to wipe all memory of her from his mind. The pain in her heart is only magnified by terror—the ability to call her wolf appears to have deserted her, as well.

For months after he and his sister escaped a crazed kidnapper, John has been dreaming about a beautiful woman he’s never met but who seems so familiar. A woman he’s shocked to find in a dark bar one night. A woman who agrees to come back to his apartment for raw, passionate sex.

One erotic, stolen night reopens old wounds, uncovers buried memories and sets Kaine and John on a path filled with danger, magic and potential heartbreak.

Thoughts: Kaine and John have a past. But only Kaine remembers it because John had all memory of her wiped from his mind. An act that nearly shattered Kaine's heart. Months later... after a chance meeting and one steamy night together, both of their lives will be forever changed.

This was a great read. I'm loving the series. The mixture of wolves and magic makes for a fun read. John and Kaine were great characters to read about. Our heroes of this story are perfect for one another. Full of depth and stubborn as hell. Needless to say they both have issues that need to be worked out. Edge of Moonlight is magical and dangerous. An erotic tale of heartache, love and acceptance. Sexy and fast-paced. I love how well the paranormal and fantasy meshes together. John and Kaine's story is a stellar addition to this series.
