Graced with extraordinary abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition - they are the most powerful and feared among their kind. The secret lies within, a legacy evolving from the truest form of magic, and their living bloodlines are the key.

An average routine morning is exactly what twenty-year old Emma Johnson hopes to avoid when she visits Joe’s CafĂ© for a steaming cup of coffee and freshly made donuts. She’s jaded by her small town, the community that has ostracized her, and the empty house that symbolizes what her life has become; a hollow shell. Yet things are not entirely as they appear, and Emma is about to discover she isn’t the normal girl she once believed.

After she is rescued from a horde of demonic bloodthirsty creatures by Caleb, the most captivating and enigmatic person she has ever met, she struggles to accept the unimaginable truth he imparts. That he has been dispatched by the Father she has never known, a powerful vampire from the house of DeViard, to see her safely home. For Caleb is also unique, a werewolf procured to protect the invaluable royal bloodlines from harm.

Soon, the undeniable connection Emma and Caleb share evolves beyond mere attraction into something more substantial. But their time together is short lived, forced to an end when she is sent to the trueblood vampires that claim her as one of their own.

[ARC Review] - The Fire Lord's Lover

Title: The Fire Lord's Lover
Author: Kathryne Kennedy
Genre: Fantasy Romance/Historical Romance
Release Date: July 6, 2010

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: IF HIS POWERS ARE DISCOVERED, HIS FATHER WILL DESTROY HIM...

In the magical land ruled by ruthless Elven lords, The Fire Lord's son Dominic Raikes plays a deadly game to conceal his growing might from his malevolent father--until his arranged bride awakens in him passions he thought he had buried forever.

UNLESS HIS FIANCEE KILLS HIM FIRST...

Lady Cassandra has be raised in outward purity and innocence, while secretly being trained as an assassin. Her mission is to bring down the Elven Lord and his champion son. But when she gets to court she discovers that nothing is what it seems, least of all the man she married.

Then Dominic and Cassandra together uncover an unspeakable evil, one that threatens the destruction of the magical realm they would give their souls to save.

Thoughts: Dominic is the son of The Fire Lord, who has to be very cautious that his father doesn't find out that his powers are growing. If the The Fire Lord finds out it could be the end of Dominic. He's surround by danger, even from the person closest to him. Lady Cassandra, Dominic's new bride is innocent, but at the same time very dangerous.

The Fire Lord's Lover was beautiful written. It was very Tolkien-esque from the cover to the characters, which was a plus for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I loved both the intrigue and danger. Ms Kennedy's lush description of characters and their surroundings brings the world to life in a way that makes you eager to read more. Original and captivating, a story that will delight both fantasy and historical romance fans.

[Review] - Lovestruck

Title: Lovestruck
Author: KT Grant
Genre: Contemporary Lesbian Romance
Release Date: May 31, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: CEO hotel mogul Barbara Jennings has three months to decide whether to close her Manhattan hotel or cut costs by firing some of her employees. She meets her much-younger employee, Jennifer Caffey and is instantly smitten. Now Barbara has another mission, and that is to seduce the innocent Jenny.

Jenny is also attracted to the powerful and beautiful Barbara, but has never really had a steamy love affair with another woman. Unwittingly, she allows herself to be swept away by her passion for this older woman who may ruin her life.

Thoughts: Jenny and Barbara are total opposites, but they do have similarities. While both are insecure about certain things, they are also independent women. But there is that one thing missing for both of them. Love, a companion, someone they can share their life with.

This story was fun to read. I'm definitely out of my comfort zone genre wise. Contemporary Romance or Female/Female isn't usually something I read but with this one, I ended up enjoying the story. Lovestuck is fun, intense and steamy. I liked both the plot and characters. Jenny especially, I thought she was a great character. Mike and Kyle were two characters that stood out for me too. Ms Grant's writing is creative and seductive. This story was written in such away that makes the characters believable and true.

[Review] - Carnal Sin

Title: Carnal Sin
Author: Allison Brennan
Series: The Seven Deadly Sins
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 22, 2010

I received this book for review from Random House.

Summary: Santa Louisa is still reeling from the lethal rampage of the demon Envy, one of the Seven Deadly Sins released from Hell by black magic. The fiendish entity was finally trapped, but when more bodies bearing satanic marks surface in Los Angeles, demon hunter Moira O’Donnell fears the terror has only just begun.

Racing to L.A., Moira discovers that the City of Angels is fast becoming the demon Lust’s decadent playground. She suspects another coven is at work, aided indirectly by her diabolical mother, the powerful witch Fiona. But when Moira’s unwanted psychic powers intensify, she fears her connection to the underworld is putting everyone she cares about in grave danger.

As supernatural war erupts, Moira and smoldering, seductive Rafe Cooper are caught in the crossfire. Cornered by mortal and unearthly enemies, they must master all their own powers to survive—and to understand if the intensely passionate feelings that bind them are Lust’s demon magic or true desire.

Thoughts: It's been two weeks since the coven and Envy reeked havoc on Santa Louisa. Moria is dealing with nightmares, visions and wondering what sin will be unleashed next. She can no long feel her mother, the evil Fiona. Being clueless on that front has her on the edge also. But it isn't long before Moira learns that Lust has set up shop in L.A. and it's taking no prisoners.

This is only the second time I've read a book by Allison Brennan. As with the first book, the second has also blown me away. Carnal Sin is suspenseful, scenes that are action packed and full of danger, plus some intense romance. We get to see a lot of Moira and Rafe and how their relationship is progressing. I liked that everything wasn't perfect for them in the beginning, that they had issues they need to deal with. Ms. Brennan is such a brilliant storyteller, she keeps you on the edge of your seat and that's where you stay until the end of the book. I definitely recommend this book and series.

[ARC Review] - Shadow Bound

Title: Shadow Bound
Author: Erin Kellison
Series: Shadow
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 29, 2010

I received this book for review from Dorchester Publishing.

Summary:
Death
Some people will do anything to avoid it. Even trade their immortal souls for endless existence.

Wraiths
Secretly, inexorably, they are infiltrating our world, sucking the essence out of unsuspecting victims with their hideous parody of a kiss.

Segue
Adam Thorne founded the Institute to study and destroy his monster of a brother, but the key to its success is held in the pale, slender hand of a woman on the run. There is something hauntingly different about Talia O’Brien, her unknowing sensuality, her uncanny way of slipping into Shadow.

Twilight
This is the place between life and what comes after - a dark forest of fantasy, filled with beauty, peril, mystery. And Talia is about to open the door.

Thoughts: Adam Thorne is on a mission to find a way to kill his wraith brother, Jacob. It's one of the main reason's he created the Segue Institute. But when he learns of the intriguing Dr. Talia O'Brien he believes her knowledge and ability will lead him to the answers he's look for.

This was an excellent story. Original, fast, full of action with an eerie but, fascinating story line. I wasn't a fan of Talia's at first, but in the end I found both her and Adam to be very interesting characters. Shadow Bound is a haunting tale where fantasy and the paranormal are woven together beautifully. Both the romance and action will keep you turning the page.

[Review] - The Iron King

Title: The Iron King
Author: Julie Kagawa
Series: The Iron Fey
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: February 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Big Honcho Media.

Summary: MEGHAN CHASE HAS A SECRET DESTINY— ONE SHE COULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED…

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Thoughts: In the time span of 24 hours Meghan Chase turns 16, learns that her little brother has been kidnapped. Her best friend is the Puck of legend and that all the fae creatures she's read about are very real. Plus if that wasn't bad enough she learns that she is the daughter of the Seelie King. But with some unexpected companions she just might make it through Nevernever and maybe even back home.

The Iron King was a fantastic read, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. A wonderful cast of characters. I loved both Ash and Puck, but Grim the Cait Sith was a favorite also. Another great factor in loving this book was the author's inspiration from A Midsummer Night's Dream. This was an exciting tale of danger, discovery of the truth and new found love. Ms. Kagawa has created a world that readers will want to visit time and again. Meghan's journey has just begun, I look forward to finding out where it will lead.

[Series Spotlight] - Modern Tale of Faerie

This month's Series Spotlight is on Modern Tale of Faerie by Holly Black. This is one of my favorite fae series, I think it's also one of the first fae series I read. Holly Black has created a very seductive world of danger and romance. So far there are the three stories in the series, I'm not sure if they'll be more, but I hope so. This series will be available in an omnibus on October 19th.

Welcome to the realm of very scary faeries!

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces the sixteen-year-old back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms -- a struggle that could very well mean her death.

When seventeen-year-old Valerie Russell runs away to New York City, she's trying to escape a life that has utterly betrayed her. Sporting a new identity, she takes up with a gang of squatters who live in the city's labyrinthine subway system.

But there's something eerily beguiling about Val's new friends. Impulsive Lolli talks of monsters in the subway tunnels they call home and shoots up a shimmery amber-colored powder that makes the shadows around her dance. Severe Luis claims he can make deals with creatures that no one else can see. And then there's Luis's brother, timid and sensitive Dave, who makes the mistake of letting Val tag along as he makes a delivery to a woman who turns out to have goat hooves instead of feet.

When a bewildered Val allows Lolli to talk her into tracking down the hidden lair of the creature for whom Luis and Dave have been dealing, Val finds herself bound into service by a troll named Ravus. He is as hideous as he is honorable. And as Val grows to know him, she finds herself torn between her affection for an honorable monster and her fear of what her new friends are becoming.

In the realm of Faerie, the time has come for Roiben's coronation. Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure of only one thing -- her love for Roiben. But when Kaye, drunk on faerie wine, declares herself to Roiben, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest. Now Kaye can't see or speak to Roiben unless she can find the one thing she knows doesn't exist: a faerie who can tell a lie.

Miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, Kaye decides to tell her mother the truth -- that she is a changeling left in place of the human daughter stolen long ago. Her mother's shock and horror sends Kaye back to the world of Faerie to find her human counterpart and return her to Ironside. But once back in the faerie courts, Kaye finds herself a pawn in the games of Silarial, queen of the Seelie Court. Silarial wants Roiben's throne, and she will use Kaye, and any means necessary, to get it. In this game of wits and weapons, can a pixie outplay a queen?

[Review] - Damned and Desired

Title: Damned and Desired
Author: Kathy Kulig
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Erotica
Release Date: January 6, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: She’s a demon, he’s a shapeshifting leopard. From their first meeting in the Arizona desert, passion ignites and trouble begins. As a demon, Sakari Lock must harvest lifeforce energy through sexual seductions to sustain her exiled world. But when Sakari meets Brad, she breaks the number one rule of Anartia—don’t get personal with your quarry.

Physician’s assistant Brad Montag is drawn to Sakari’s lustful advances with a blazing desire he can’t explain, unaware of how dangerous she is. No matter how enticing, she’s a complication he doesn’t need until he can conquer his past and regain control of his shapeshifting abilities. Sex this wicked and good can only lead to disaster.

When immortals from an alternate dimension try to free their exiled world, Brad is caught in the middle of a battle that could destroy not only him, but the land he loves.

Stand-alone sequel to Desert of the Damned.

Reader Advisory: This book offers a bit of bondage for your BDSM pleasure, as well as secondary characters getting down with a little M/M/F fun of their own.

Thoughts: Sakari Lock is from a world called Anartia. Her world is very unstable. To do her part for her world it is her job as a drone to feed on lifeforce energy through sex. Her life depends on this, so to fail would be disastrous. On Earth she meets Brad Montag and breaks the one rule she was told not to break. To get personal with her prey.

Damned and Desired was a riveting story, full of adventure, lust and love. Along with paranormal elements it had a bit of SciFi feel to it too that I enjoyed very much. Both Sakari and Ben struggle with the decisions of doing what needs to be done and doing what they desire the most. The steamy scenes and exotic characters make for an exciting read.

Score: 4 Stars

Interview/Giveaway with Ashlyn Chase

I'm excited to welcome Ashlyn Chase to my blog today. Writing book Paranormal and Erotica she has many books under her belt, but her latest book is the first in a new series, Strange Neighbors.

Hi Ashlyn, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?

Sure…that’s not an intimidating question at all! (snicker) In my bio, I describe myself as an Almond Joy bar—a little nutty, a little flaky, but basically sweet. That pretty much describes my personality—and maybe my life.

When I graduated from high school, I was going to be the next great artist, ‘discovered’ right out of Mass College of Art, exhibiting in New York galleries, rich and famous beyond my wildest dreams. Yeah, that didn’t happen.

When I suddenly realized I’d have to get a j-o-b, I went to nursing school. I worked as a nurse for twenty years, but always found creative hobbies to keep that side of me happy. I should have known way back in high school that I was destined to become a writer. I loved my creative writing class and got my one and only A+ from my senior English teacher—and he was tough. Ah well…Only a few decades later, I discovered that George Eliot was right when he said, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”

Strange Neighbors is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it?

Well, as I mentioned, I went to Mass College of Art. I lived in Boston, in the very neighborhood I wrote about. To me, the building itself is one of the main characters…and the only “character” that figures prominently in all of the stories in the series.

I used a fake address, of course, but if it existed, it would have been very close to where I actually lived. If you try to visit 496 Beacon Street, you’ll find yourself in the middle of Mass. Ave. Don’t do that! It’s a very busy intersection, and Boston drivers aren’t known for their courtesy. Why did I populate the building with a bunch of paranormal misfits? Why not? It’s fun.

What is your writing day like?

I get up at the crack of dawn. My husband works in Boston, so his commute from New Hampshire begins early. I wake up with coffee in hand, watching the local news, and when fully conscious I go to my office upstairs to work. I usually answer email first, but that’s often a mistake. I try to be writing by 9 a.m. For some weird reason, I just can’t jump on the treadmill and wake up there, then write my book and sometime in the afternoon, answer email. I’ll keep working on it.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?

I love to read the genres I write. Paranormal, romantic comedy, chic-lit, erotic romance, but lately I’ve been enjoying the occasional historical romance. I blame my critique partner Emily Bryan for that. She writes awesome historical romances. I’ll bet you’re wondering if I’m planning to write any historicals...You never know. The ghost of an eighteenth century nanny might possess me and demand I write her story. Hey, it happens.

Which Authors have influenced you the most?

Diana Gabaldon was the first romance writer I ever read. I was going through a terrible time in my life with two terminally ill parents, and a fellow nurse shoved a book at me and said, “Here. Read this.” She didn’t tell me it was a romance, and I’m glad. I would have politely refused. I was born into an intellectual family, and those books were beneath us for some reason. (I still don’t know why.) I didn’t realize I was reading a romance until well into the sequel! All I knew was this wonderful, brilliantly written story about an intelligent, modern woman provided me with hours of healthy escapism, exactly when I needed it. Since then, many authors have come into my life. Annette Blair is one of the major influences where my career is concerned.

Out of all the heroes you have written about, do you have a favorite?

I love them all for different reasons. But most of them are heroic when it comes to putting up with their heroines’ antics and loving them so much they won’t desert them, no matter what kind of trouble they get themselves into. I’m not saying it’s always the hero who saves the day…no damsels in distress for this author. Sometimes it’s the heroine who saves herself by being smart, not muscular. And it’s not always the heroine causing trouble. In one of my novella’s Being Randy, the shapeshifting coyote hero is the culprit.

Are there any real life people that have inspired the characters in your series?

So far, only one…and she knows who she is. In fact, she thinks it’s hilarious. My friend Dalton Diaz was relating her tale of woe to a group of writers—about how she attended her town’s Founder’s Day fair, fell into a hole and twisted her ankle. Then she was further mortified when the cute EMT’s kicked the kids off the display ambulance and carted her off to the hospital. A mutual friend of ours teased her saying, “If you weren’t so top-heavy, you wouldn’t have fallen over.” That became the inspiration for my comedy, Heaving Bosoms. Moral of the story…be careful what you say in front of writers.

If you lived in a building full of paranormal creatures, which would like as a neighbor?

Oh, man! What a scary and great question. First of all, I’m not sure my current neighbors aren’t a family of vampires. They keep all the windows covered and have only been seen out at night. You do the math! If I had my preference, I’d say…whoever could wave a wand and grant my fondest wishes. My fairy Godmother, I guess? Maybe a genie? One who took a liking to me and didn’t play tricks, like the genie in my short story Djinn and Tonic.

You write both Erotica and Paranormal Romance, do you find one easier to write than the other?

Writing anything presents its challenges. But I’d say because I write comedy (which is probably the hardest) and combining it with erotic romance (also an ordeal,) there’s a high level of difficulty in most of what I do. But I never took the easy way in my life. An elderly female writer (I can’t remember her name, darn it) said that to be a writer, you must be fearless. That means you have to try not to care what other people think, you have to stick to your guns and write what matters to you, and you have to risk putting yourself out there, knowing that someone will wonder—Oh my goodness, did she do that with a vampire?

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?

Something to drink…water, soda or coffee, not wine. I need to concentrate. That and my glasses are very important. A computer or lap top is nice too. Sure, I can write long-hand…if I want writer’s cramp and misspelled words.

What is up next? Will Strange Neighbors lead into a series?

Yes, book two is already complete, and has a working title of The Werewolf Next Door, and will be in stores in February 2011. After that, I’ll finish the third one, which I’m writing right now.

Thanks for the interview, Anna! I hope you enjoy reading Strange Neighbors as much as I
enjoyed writing it.

[Review] - Motor City Fae

Title: Motor City Fae
Author: Cindy Spencer Pape
Series: Urban Arcana
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 7, 2010

I received this book for review from Carina Press through NetGalley.

Summary: Detroit artist Meagan Kelly has had a strong sixth sense all her life, but that doesn't mean the gorgeous stranger's crazy story—that she's a half-elf, half human heiress—is true. But Meagan can't deny the evidence of her own eyes—he's Fae. A tall, blond, handsome, pointy-eared elf—and a man she just can't get enough of.

Ric Thornhill's assignment just got a lot more complicated. The more time he spends with Meagan, the harder it is to see her as a political tool to prevent an all-out war between humans and Fae.

Now Meagan's in a race to master her newly released powers in time to prevent the conflict, convince a jealous Queen not to strip Ric of his powers, and find out if she can build a life that straddles two worlds.

Thoughts: Artist Meagan Kelly has always had a feel for things. She knew when good or bad things were about to happen. She never knew why she could sense these things, but she always took them for what they were. When hunky Ric Thornhill tells her it's because she's half-elf, it is a lot to take in but she doesn't have a hard time believing him at his word. A new world is opened up for her, one where she has enemies that don't want her to take part in the important vote being held by the Seelie council.

I loved this story! I have read previous titles from this author so I was pretty positive I'd enjoy this new one. I really liked the meeting of Ric and Meagan. From the moment they cross paths they are attracted to each other. Their attraction is fierce and electric. The story is set in Detroit, which I liked. It was a nice change. I haven't read any stories set there, at least none that I recall. Motor City Fae is filled with intense, sensual scenes. Spencer Pape has created an interesting world that is inhabited by not just fae - but also healers, magic users and shifters. I look forward to reading more about these characters. Wonderfully paced. A captivating read, that keeps you wanting more.

[Review] - Infinity

Title: Infinity
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Series: Chronicles of Nick
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: May 25, 2010

Summary: At 14, Nick Gautier is an average kid who runs with the wrong crowd. But on the night he decides to go straight and refuses to mug an innocent tourist, his crew turns on him and just as he thinks his life is over... a new one begins.

Kyrian of Thrace isn't just a vampire slayer, he's a Dark-Hunter and he introduces Nick to a world that he never imagined.

With new enemies who make his old ones look like wimps, Nick must either measure up or get sized for a body bag. It's kill or be killed and this kid who was born on the wrong side finds a strength inside him that he never knew existed.

Now if he can only find someone to help battle the demons that don't reside inside him.

Thoughts: Nick is a kid from the Lower Ninth just trying to make it through the day. To survive high school. But Nick is not your normal teenager, he is so much more. One bad decision changes everything for him and he enters a world he never knew existed.

For someone who is already a fan of the Dark-Hunters and a Nick fan, I loved this book. We get to see where Nick began and the incident that leads to him meeting Kyrian. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil either series. But this was a fun story, full of the action and the humor we come to expect in a Kenyon novel. While there are new characters to enjoy, there are also a lot of familiar faces that I think will tickle fans of the Dark-Hunters with delight. Infinity is a page turner and I believe it'll be a fun read whether your new to this series or a die-hard fan.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Kelly Link

I'm excited to welcome Kelly Link, author of Pretty Monsters (out today in paperback) to the blog. She's here today with some advice that writers will find useful.

This is going to be a post mostly for writers, and mostly for younger writers/writers at a certain stage of their career. I know some writers don’t like to read in their genre -- or at all -- while they’re working. There are good reasons for that: fear of taking on someone else’s voice, or even just the fear that knowing someone else has been working with the same material or in the same territory will prove dispiriting. Sometimes writers decide to read only books available during the time period that they’re writing about, or only other books about that time period. Here are some other ways to read like a writer:

1. Read widely. Don’t just read in the genre you want to work in. Everyone turns up their nose at some genre, but writers really ought not to do this, at least not until they’ve sold at least a couple of novels. Don’t like realistic fiction? Read Jane Hamilton’s Disobedience, or Richard Russo’s Straight Man. Never read a romance novel? Try Laura Kinsale, or Eva Ibbotson, or Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle. Sneer at science fiction? Try Lois McMaster Bujold, or M. T. Anderson’s Feed. Don’t like short stories? Try Margo Lanagan or Joe Hill, Grace Paley or Lorrie Moore. Don’t like Westerns? Try one of Molly Gloss’s books: I’d recommend starting with The Hearts of Horses. Read poetry, too. The Rattle Bag is a good starting place, but there’s plenty of interesting contemporary work out there -- pick up a year’s best anthology, and figure out what kind of work you respond to.

Here’s why you should do this. Every genre has its strengths and weaknesses, different tools, different ways of hooking its audience. If you’re going to be a writer, you need all the tools you can get.

2. Read nonfiction. I’m a fan of David Quammen’s books, and Jeffrey Steingarten’s The Man Who Ate Everything. Julie Phillip’s biography James Tiptree, Jr: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon is also a page-turner. Plus, it’s about a writer. Paul Barber’s Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality is terrific, even if you’re sick of vampires. Especially if you’re sick of vampires?

Why? Because as a writer, you get told all the time not to infodump, and yet exposition can be an elegant and economic way of slowing down the narrative, when you want to slow it down. It can be a way to shift the reader’s focus, or distract them from a bit of sleight of hand. Learn about how to handle exposition by reading nonfiction. As a bonus, you’ll be better at worldbuilding, and a better cook, too.

3. Don’t be embarrassed by the books that you love. Who cares if someone gives you an odd look when they catch you reading YA, or romance, or SF on the subway? If you’re a writer, your business is books. You have permission to read whatever you want to read, and if you do love a genre that doesn’t get much respect, then stand up for it. Figure out what it does that you respond to as a reader, because it’s probably something that you’ll want to try to do.

4. Read classics as well as contemporary novels. Mary Elizabeth Braddon is swell, and so are many of the classic English ghost story writers. There are a ton of excellent older young adult books, like T. H. White’s Mistress Masham’s Repose, as well as Joan Aiken’s Dido Twite series.

5. If you can, join a workshop at some point so you can read work in progress. I’m the product of an MFA program, and of the Clarion Workshop, which is a six-week workshop for writers of science fiction and fantasy. I love workshops. It’s a gift to be told how other writers read your work, but it’s even more of a gift to have the chance to think about how other people approach their stories. The more effort you put into reading someone else’s short fiction, the more you bring back to your own fiction the next time you sit down to write.

6. Read work in translation, and work by writers from other countries. (And no, not just Stieg Larsson’s books.) Read books by writers whose lives aren’t/weren’t much like your own life. If you’re white, read books by writers of color. If you’re a man, read books by women. If you’re American, read Nigerian authors.

7. Realize that the things you most dislike in someone else’s fiction are likely to be things that you do in your own writing -- your own areas of weakness as a writer. This is true in workshop, and it’s also true for published fiction. Hate something with a burning passion? Why would you be so worked up if you weren’t afraid – even subconsciously -- that you might be doing it too?

8. Learn to read other writers sympathetically. What are they trying to achieve? What is the book (or story) that they wanted the reader to encounter? If they haven’t succeeded, why not? If a book doesn’t work for you, then does it work for other readers? If so, why? (Be generous here, too, when thinking about why a book has a large audience. Don’t assign the worst possible reasons. Have respect for other readers.)

9. Read awful books. No, seriously. Read them out loud, with friends, if you can. Identify the ways in which you can learn from them. My favorite awful book? Micah by Laurel K. Hamilton (I am not going to say that her other books are awful, by the way. But this one is astonishingly -- and usefully – and wonderfully -- horrible. I highly recommend it.)

10. Learn to read other kinds of narrative. Think about narrative when you’re watching television, or a movie. Apply all of the rules above. Read comic books. Read Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and Lynda Barry’s What It Is. Read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series. Learn how to read advertisements -- what they want to accomplish, and how. Learn to read other people -- your friends, your family, your coworkers. Think about how they present themselves, their patterns of speech, the stories they tell about themselves. Again, be sympathetic here. Everybody is the hero of their own story. Be observant, not a sociopath.

11. Learn to read like an editor. Reading slush was one of the best things I’ve ever done as a writer. You may or may not be able to volunteer for a publisher. If you can’t, then pick up a book or a magazine, and start reading. Forget that rule above, about reading sympathetically. Instead, pinpoint the sentence, or the paragraph where you want to stop reading, and why. Eventually you should be able to do this within the first two paragraphs. Now go back and do the same thing with your own fiction. You can do the same thing with a successful piece of writing. Identify that moment where you fall into the narrative. And as you continue to read, look for those places where you drift, those places where you are riveted again.

12. Take a short story or a novel that you love, and type it out a few pages at a time before you start your own writing. This is a way of reading more slowly. It helps me think about the decisions that the author has made -- about structure, characterization, language, etc.

13. Read a piece of fiction that you’re proud of, out loud. Preferably to an audience. But don’t read for too long -- fifteen to twenty minutes is probably long enough. If you have to stop to explain something, you’re probably not reading the right section. Learn to read the audience as well -- are there places where they are particularly engaged? Where they seem to disengage? Try reading someone else’s work out loud.

14. Every once in a while read a book out of order. Read the beginning, then the ending, then dip around in the middle. I do this all the time, especially with mystery novels. If the book is a good book, it shouldn’t matter if you know what’s going to happen. In fact, if you know what’s going to happen, you’re better able to see how the writer set up their narrative, their ending, so that you can learn from their strategies.

15. If you love a particular author’s work, and you want to be able to do what they do in their fiction, read the authors that they claim as inspiration, the work that they are indebted to. Trace that genealogical line.

One last rule: If you’re a short-story writer, subscribe to at least three magazines each year. Subscribe to ones that you would want your work to appear in. If there aren’t any magazines that you’d want to be published in, then don’t write short stories. Bonus points if you subscribe to a magazine that isn’t quite in the genre that you work in. Poetry Magazine is swell. The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction publishes writers like Carol Emshwiller and Rick Bowes. There are many excellent zines. One Story is terrific. So are VQR, Tin House, and Conjunctions. Right now my favorite online magazine is Strange Horizons, and guess what? It’s free.
