[Review] - In Dreams Begin

Title: In Dreams Begin
Author: Skyler White
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: November 2, 2010

I received this book for review from the author & Penguin/Berkley Books.

Summary:  From a Victorian Ireland of magic, poetry and rebellion, Ida Jameson, an amateur occultist, reaches out for power, but captures Laura Armstrong, a modern-day graphic artist instead. Now, for the man or demon she loves, each woman must span a bridge through Hell and across history . . . or destroy it.

“Every passionate man is linked with
another age, historical or imaginary, where
alone he finds images that rouse his energy.”

--W. B. Yeats

Anchored in fact on both sides of history, Laura and Ida, modern rationalist and fin de siècle occultist, are linked from the moment Ida channels Laura into the body of celebrated beauty and Irish freedom-fighter Maud Gonne. When Laura falls—from an ocean and a hundred years away—passionately, Victorianly in love with the young poet W. B. Yeats, their love affair entwines with Irish history and weaves through Yeats’s poetry until Ida discovers something she wants more than magic in the subterranean spaces in between.

With her Irish past threatening her orderly present and the man she loves in it, Laura and Yeats—the practical materialist and the poet magus—must find a way to make love last over time, in changing bodies, through modern damnation, and into the mythic past to link their pilgrim souls . . . or lose them forever.

Thoughts: In Victorian Ireland an occultist Ida Jameson is able to reach out to Laura Armstrong in modern day. This act will take them on a journey of magic and passion that they never expected.

When the author asked me if I'd like to review In Dreams Begin, it wasn't a hard decision - she had me at Victorian Ireland. Just knowing that bit of information I knew the story would intrigue me, and it did. There is also a steampunk feel to it that I thought was great.

In Dreams Begin is a darkly beautiful story. A poetic and passionate telling that spands dreams and centuries.  Ms. White's writing is true and challenging.  It's urban/dark fantasy, but when your reading her stuff she makes you stop and think. This was an enjoyable read for me.  I think those who enjoyed and Falling Fly, will like this new book.

Interview/Giveaway with Mary Wine

It's my pleasure to welcome Mary Wine to my blog today. She is the author of Highland Hellcat. Let's give her a big welcome!

Hi Mary, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! It's great having you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
MW: I’m a full time writer but my other love is making historical garments. My closet has clothing hundreds of years out of date in it. My writing office is known as ‘the secret lab’ and my sewing machines are in there along with my computer. The parrot is my office manager; he bosses me around and gets his way all the time. Since his perch is by the front window, that clearly makes him the office manager because his office has a view.

Highland Hellcat is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
MW:  I love those Highlanders…grrrr. I love to read history. Yes, the word geek comes to mind but it’s true. I was reading an account of the murder of James the first of Scotland and the idea for this trilogy came to mind. History books are full of facts about what happened to the nobles but I began thinking…what about everyone else? They had to live through shifting alliances and power struggles. I wanted to give a couple a happy ending during a time when just getting by was considered doing well.

What is your writing day like?
MW: The parrot wakes me up at first light. I told you, he’s the office manager. lol. Really, he is so attached to us, he sleeps in a small cage in our master bathroom. He crawls down to the bottom of it and begins pulling on the thin rods…like he’s playing a harp. I am usually the first up and do a fair bit of writing while the house is still quite. I often dream of the next scene in my book, so it works out well because I have the chance to get it down before I become distracted by getting the day started with my boys.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
MW: I love romance. I’m always reading one! I also I read a lot of history.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
MW: Research, dates, names and other facts of the time I’m writing in.

What inspired your most when writing Connor and Brina's story?
MW: The structure of life during these times. It was vitally important to these people. Think about it, they had no nightly news cast, no public library, no formalized education. The church stabilized their lives and in many ways helped them keep track of time. So how do you time how long it takes to hard boil an egg with no clock in the house? The lord’s prayer three times through. They had no idea why things happened, so they turned to superstition. Third daughters were often promised to the church as were third sons. What inspired me to write this story was the fact that one thing hasn’t changed… sometimes things don’t go as planed. So what happens then?

What type of research did you do for Highland Hellcat?
MW: I did quite a bit! I’ve done historical reenactment and not just a daily event such as a renaissance faire. I’ve camped, for an entire week and let me tell you, when there is no electricity… someone willing to tell a story by the fire side is very entertaining. One piper can put a smile on everyone’s face and learn little things about the clothing you never knew before. Those bodices, which push your… ahem… “fruit” up into a tempting display… well, they also keep those apples from falling forward, like when you’re working over the fire.

Who is your favorite Highlander (be it in history, books or movies)?
MW: Well I was quite the fan of Adrian Paul in ‘Highlander’. But I think my Highlanders are more like Braveheart…good men, unless pushed to their limits. Then there is the gentleman I met recently on a trip to Alaska. There I was, in a restored cat house and I hear a brogue so thick, I could have spread it on a piece of toast. I turned around and met a wonderful man, a true Highlander who was kind enough to answer all my questions about his home and yes, he plays golf.

Since becoming published, what has been your favorite part of the process?

MW: Being able to fondle a new book with my name on it…. and reading an email or card from someone that loved my story. I mean… my story… not one of the authors I love to read… mine. It’s humbling and exciting. Recently I attended RAW, Lora Leigh’s reader event. I hosted a welcome tea, in full Victorian dress and a lady came to see me. She brought me a beautiful handkerchief and her hand shook while she handed it to me because she was so excited to meet me. That was humbling and I treasure the memory. I can’t thank my readers enough, they make me the author I am.

What is up next for you and your writing?
MW: I’m between contracts, so I don’t know. I’ve been working on ideas and am waiting for an editor to put me to work! Some of the things I’ve got out there…Medieval, Steam Punk and Military contemporary. The last book in this series, Highland Heat, will be in stores in March 2011. You can always drop by my website for details of what I’m up to MaryWine.com.

[ARC Review] - The Taming of the Wolf

Title: The Taming of the Wolf
Author: Lydia Dare
Series: Historical Paranormal Romance
Release Date: November 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: HE COULD NEVER LOSE CONTROL...

Dashiel Thorpe, Earl of Brimsworth, has spent his life fighting the wolf within him. But when the full moon rises, Dash is helpless. A chance encounter with Caitrin Macleod on a moonlit night inadvertently binds the two together irrevocably, and Dash's impulsiveness plunges them both into a nightmare.

SHE NEVER SAW HIM COMING...

Caitrin Macleod is no quiet country lass, but a witch we remarkable abilities. But when it comes to Dashiel, she's as helpless to fight his true nature as he is. Her senses overwhelmed, she runs back to the safety and security of her native Scotland.

But Dashiel is determined to follow her--she's the only woman who can free him from a fate worse than death. And Caitrin will ultimately have to decided whether she's running from danger, or true love.

Thoughts: Caitrin Macleod has visions of the future. When she starts having visions of a gold wolf causing all sorts of trouble, she worries but has no clue it will involve her. Dashiel Thorpe's foolish act on a full moon will not only change his life - but Caitrin's as well.

The Taming of the Wolf is a an absolutely fun read, a stellar addition to the series. Caitrin and Dashiel play a game of flirtatious -  push and pull, cat and mouse and it was interesting to see it play out.  Caitrin first appeared in Tall, Dark and Wolfish. While she meant well, I found her a bit annoying. Even though she is a stubborn lass through out her story, she definitely grows on me. It is pretty much the same for Dashiel. He appears in the The Wolf Next Door, causing all sorts of trouble. But in the end he becomes quite a lovable character.

Not only do Caitrin and Dashiel find love and passion with each other. But serenity and compassion play a big role. Something both characters need dearly.

[Review] - Arson

Title: Arson
Author: Estevan Vega
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: May 4, 2010

I receive this book for review from the author.

Summary:  Arson Gable feels like a freak. He can create fire. He never asked for it.  He never wanted it.  But he can't shut it off.

Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin—moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he’s never had: purpose. Using what he fears most about himself, Arson must face his consuming past and confront the nightmare that is his present as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Dark, moody, and breathtakingly relevant, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated boy with unimaginable ability, is sure to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation.

Thoughts: Arson Gable can create fire.  A unique gift or a wretched curse. This part of Arson has always made him feel like a freak.  Feel like he has no purpose in life. Then he meets a girl named Embery, things change for the both of them.

Arson is a book that I've seen quite a bit of on the blogs. The cover definitely catches your attention. So, I jumped at the chance to review it when I was sent the request by the author.

Arson is a page turner.  Suspense and action that will fill your senses, while the romance will capture your heart.  An enthralling story.   Chillingly dark as well as vibrant.  I was definitely wowed by the story. It was much more than I thought it would be.  Plus I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger.  Mr Vega is a superb writer.  Don't rely on the book summary to learn what the book is about.  Crack the book open. It's a must read.

[Review] - Halo

Title: Halo
Author: Alexandra Adornetto
Series: Halo
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: August 31, 2010

I received this book for review from Macmillan.

Summary:  Three angels--Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, the youngest and most human--are sent by Heaven to bring good to a world falling under the influence of darkness.  They work hard to conceal their luminous glow, superhuman powers, and, most dangerous of all their wings, all the while avoiding all human attachments

Then Bethany meets Xavier Woods, and neither of them is able to resist the attraction between them.  Gabriel and Ivy do everything in their power to intervene, but the bond between Xavier and Bethany seems to strong. The angels' mission is urgent, and dark forces are threatening. Will love ruin Bethany or save her?

Thoughts: Three angels Gabriel, Ivy and Bethany arrive in Venus Cove. They are there to protect and observe. Watchful of the coming darkness. Human interaction is frowned upon and falling in love with a human is definitely out of the question. But when Bethany meets human Xavier -- she finds she can't resist him.

Angels seem to be the new vampire. While I prefer my vampires-- Angels have definitely been intriguing.  Halo is the 3rd "angel book" I've read in the last few weeks. I thought the subject would become old by now, but not so much.

Halo is beautiful and dangerous. A splendid beginning to the series.  It was quite a unique story. Different enough from similar books that it had my attention. The story was a bit slow, but still an enjoyable read. Bethany was a great character. Everything is shiny and new to her. It was interesting to see her character grow. Then there is the end, that very last line. It's a killer.

[Series Spotlight] - Black Jewels

The Black Jewels series, is a fantasy series by Anne Bishop. It was recommended to me by Amy C, from Romance Book Wyrm. At the time I was a bit hesitate to start the series. But ended up really loving it. A very unique world that once you start reading it you won't want to stop. I recently finished reading books 7 & 8 and the stories in the series only get better.  This is one series I highly recommend.

Daughter of the Blood
Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her dazzling web of dreams and visions.

Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence--and corruption.

Whoever controls the Queen controls the Darkness. Three men, sworn enemies, know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love--and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining.

Heir to the Shadows
The Blood have waited centuries for the coming of Witch, the living embodiment of magic. But Jaenelle, the young girl prophecy spoke of, is haunted by the cruel battles fought over her future power. For not all the Blood await her as a savior. Some dismiss her as myth. Some refuse to believe. And some would use her, making her a puppet to their whims.

Only time, and the love of her guardians, have healed Jaenelle’s physical wounds. But her mind is still fragile, amnesia providing a shield from the terrors of her childhood. Nothing, however, can shield her from her destiny. And soon the day of reckoning will come. When her memories return. When her magic matures. When she is forced to accept her fate.

On that day, the dark Realms will know what it means to be ruled by Witch.

Queen of Darkness
Jaenelle Angelline has made her Offering to the Darkness, and reigns as Queen of Ebon Askavi. The Shadow Realm lies under her protection. No longer will the corrupt Blood slaughter her people and defile her lands. But where one door has been closed, another may be opened…or broken through, and Jaenelle must unleash the terrible glory that is Witch to destroy her enemies once and for all.

Even so, she cannot stand alone. Somewhere, long lost in the madness of the Twisted Kingdom, is Daemon, her promised Consort. His unyielding love for Jaenelle will complete her Court and secure her power. Yet, even together, their strength may not be enough to stave off their enemies.

In the end, only Jaenelle’s greatest sacrifice will be enough to save those she loves…

The Invisible Ring
Jared is a Red-Jeweled Warlord bound as a pleasure slave by the Ring of Obedience. After suffering nine years of torment as a slave, he murdered his owner and escaped—only to be caught and sold in slavery once again.

Purchased by a notorious queen, Jared fears he will share the mysterious fate of her other slaves—never to be seen again—and so prepares himself for death. But the Gray Lady may not be what she seems, and Jared soon faces a difficult decision: his freedom…or his honor.

Dreams Made Flesh
Return to the realm of the Blood in Dreams Made Flesh - featuring four revelatory adventures of Janelle and her kindred...

Janelle is the most powerful Witch ever known, centuries of hopes and dreams made flesh at last. She has forged ties with three of the realm's mightiest Blood warriors: Saetan, the High Lord of Hell, who trains Jaenelle in magic and adopts her as his daughter; Lucivar, the winged Eyrien warlord who becomes her protector; and the near-immortal Daemon, born to be Witch's lover. Jaenelle has assumed her rightful place as Queen of the Darkness and restored order and peace to the realms... but at a terrible cost.

Tangled Webs
The invitation was signed Jaenelle Angelline, she who had been both Witch and Queen.

It summons her family to an entertainment she has specially prepared. Surreal SaDiablo, the former courtesan and assassin, is the first to arrive. But as she and her escort enter the house, the door disappears. Surreal finds herself trapped in a nightmare created by the tangled webs of Black Widow witches...a nightmare where the monsters are all too real, and if she uses Craft to defend herself, she risks being sealed in the house forever.

But Jaenelle did not send the invitation.

Now, Jaenelle and her family must rescue Surreal and the others inside without becoming trapped themselves—and they also must discover who created such an evil place, and why. Because there is one thing they all know about this house: no matter who planned it as a way to kill members of the SaDiablo family, only one of the Blood could have created the trap…

The Shadow Queen
Dena Nehele is a land decimated by its past. Once it was ruled by corrupt Queens who were wiped out when the land was cleansed of tainted Blood. Now, only one hundred Warlord Princes stand—without a leader and without hope…

Theran Grayhaven is the last of his line, desperate to find the key that reveals a treasure great enough to restore Dena Nehele. But first he needs to find a Queen who knows Protocol, remembers the Blood’s code of honor, and lives by the Old Ways.

Languishing in the Shadow Realm, Lady Cassidy is a Queen without a court, a castoff. She is not beautiful. She thinks she is not strong. But when she is chosen to rule Dena Nehele, she must convince bitter men to serve once again.

Theran’s cousin Gray is a Warlord Prince who was damaged in mind and body by the vicious Queens who once ruled Dena Nehele. Yet something about Cassidy makes him want to serve—and makes him believe he can be made whole once again.

And only Cassidy can prove to Gray—and to herself—that wounds can heal and even the whisper of a promise can be fulfilled…

Shalador's Lady
For years the Shalador people suffered the cruelties of the corrupt Queens who ruled them, forbidding their traditions, punishing those who dared show defiance, and forcing many more into hiding. And even though the refugees found sanctuary in Dena Nehele, they have never been able to call it home.

Now that Dena Nehele has been cleansed of tainted Blood, the Rose-Jeweled Queen, Lady Cassidy, makes it her duty to restore the land and prove her ability to rule. She knows that undertaking this task will require all her heart and courage as she summons the untested power within her, a power capable of consuming her if she cannot control it.

And even if Lady Cassidy survives her trial by fire, other dangers await. For the Black Widows see visions within their tangled webs that something is coming that will change the land—and Lady Cassidy—forever…

Twilight's Dawn  [Coming March 2010]
Winsol Gifts
Daemon, the Black Jeweled Warlord Prince of Dhemlan, is settling into his first year of married life with his Witch Queen Jaenelle. But as the thirteen-day celebration of Winsol draws near, Daemon finds himself being pulled in too many directions as he plays host to his formidable family…

Shades of Honor
Still recovering from the ordeal that left her wounded and angry, Surreal returns to Ebon Rih on the orders of Prince Lucivar. And when her former lover Falonar ruthlessly challenges the rule of her family, Surreal may finally succumb to the darkness burning inside her…

Family
When someone lays a vicious trap for Queen Sylvia and her sons, the fallout completely disrupts the lives of the ruling family of Dhemlan. Now, they have to uncover the identity of the warlord known only as No Face, before he returns to finish what he started…

The High Lord’s Daughter
After losing the two most important people in his life, Daemon has assumed his father Saetan’s role as High Lord of Hell and built a wall around his heart. But when he inadvertently forges a new connection, will it be enough to break him free from his loveless life?

Waiting On Wednesday [17] - In The Company Of Vampires

[Review] - The Passionate Brood

Title: The Passionate Brood: A Novel of Richard the Lionheart and the Man Who Became Robin Hood
Author: Margaret Campbell Barnes
Genre: Historical Fiction
Release Date: October 1, 2010

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: In This compelling novel of love, loyalty, and lost chances, Margaret Campbell Barnes gives readers a new perspective on Richard the Lionheart's triumphs and tragedies. Drawing on folklore, Barnes explores what might have happened if King Richard's foster brother were none other than Robin Hood, a legendary figure more vibrant than most in authentic history. Thick as thieves as Richard builds a kingdowm and marshals a crusade, the two clash when Robin Hood so provokes the king's white-hot temper that Richard banishes him. The Passionate Brood is a tale of a man driven to win back the Holy Land, beset by the guilt of casting out his childhood friend, and shouldering the burden of being the lionhearted leader of the Plantagenets.

Thoughts: The Passionate Brood was originally published in 1944 under the name Like Us They Lived. This is a story of Richard the Lionheart, the crusades and much more. But it also asks the question what if Robin Hood of Legend was Richard's foster brother.

The Passionate Brood was an interesting and lively story. I was impressed with how easy this book was to read compared to other Historical Fictions. The writing made the reading experience an enjoyable one. I loved that the author has mixed history with folklore. Brilliant and rich in detail. The story plays like a movie in your head. Ms. Barnes has done a smashing job bring the time and characters to life.

Score: 4 Stars

Memorable Quotes:
From now on he--who had shared the home of the proud Plantagenets-- was of less account than the pigs that routed along the sides of the road.

-Robin (when he is made outlaw by Richard the Lionheart)

    [Review] - Lancelot's Lady

    Title: Lancelot's Lady
    Author: Cherish D'Angelo
    Genre: Romantic Suspense
    Release Date: September 27, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: A Bahamas holiday from dying billionaire JT Lance, a man with a dark secret, leads palliative nurse Rhianna McLellan to Jonathan, a man with his own troubled past, and Rhianna finds herself drawn to the handsome recluse, while unbeknownst to her, someone with a horrific plan is hunting her down. When palliative care nurse Rhianna McLeod is given a gift of a dream holiday to the Bahamas from her dying patient, billionaire JT Lance, Rhianna has no idea that her 'holiday' will include being stranded on a private island with Jonathan, an irritating but irresistibly handsome recluse. Or that she'll fall head over heels for the man. Jonathan isn't happy to discover a drop-dead gorgeous redhead has invaded his island. But his anger soon turns to attraction. After one failed marriage, he has guarded his heart, but Rhianna's sudden appearance makes him yearn to throw caution to the wind.To live fully in the present, Rhianna must resolve her own murky past, unravel the secret that haunts JT, foil the plans of a sleazy, blackmailing private investigator and help Jonathan find his muse. Only then can Rhianna find the love she's been searching for, and finally become...Lancelot's Lady

Thoughts: Truthfully Romantic Suspense is one of my least favorite genres. But this year I have tested it out a little.  I have checked out J.D. Robb's In Death world and enjoyed it very much.  With Lancelot's Lady, I decided to give it a try because  the hero seemed dark, very interesting and I wanted to learn more about him.

Jonathan and Rhianna's story turned out to be a surprising, wonderful story. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Lancelot's Lady is an entertaining read. Very sweet and suspenseful. Adventure, filled with twists and turns of mystery & romance. Ms. D'Angelo's writing is engaging and magical. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

    Guest Blog/Giveaway with Cherish D'Angelo

Today I have the pleasure of being part of Cherish D'Angelo's book tour, to celebrate the release of  her latest book, Lancelot's Lady.  Welcome Cherish!

    It's Like I'm a Translator…for a bunch of People on Speed

Thanks for having me here during my Cherish the Romance Virtual Book Tour, which launches my award-winning contemporary romantic suspense, Lancelot's Lady. I'm often asked how long does it take me to write a novel and do I use an outline, so today I'm going to share with you my very professional writing process.

The writing time varies per novel. My first novel Whale Song took 3.5 months; Divine Intervention took 4 months; The River took 5 months; Lancelot's Lady took 5 months; Children of the Fog (not yet published) took 6 months; and Divine Justice (also not yet published) took 6 months. Books that need more research will generally take longer for me to write as I sometimes get caught up in the research and in trying to make things work my way.

I don't do full outlines. I make notes and save them in a file when I get a "plot burst", but other than that I don't write with an outline. Before writing the first word, I mentally see the opening scene and many in the middle (turning points) and I always know how it will end. While writing, the movie plays out in my mind like a movie and I have to type really fast to keep up, which is hard because I never learned how to type properly.

It's like I'm a translator...for a bunch of people on speed. These hyped up characters tell me the story and I try to keep up. Sometimes I have to tell them to slow down or speak more clearly. Sometimes I have to question them: "What do you mean you want to_____?" Sometimes I have to take a break and let them chatter by themselves. Later, I get them to start at the beginning. Some days I feel like I'm their psychologist; other days I feel like I need one.

Yes, I hear voices in my head. But they're not mine. Really. I am an author. And there's no 12-step program for me. Now I must leave you for today as I have a woman (she's trapped in a car underwater) who's yelling at me to finish writing her story. But I invite you to check out Rhianna and Jonathan's story. Their voices are quiet whispers now…

Lancelot's Lady ~ A Bahamas holiday from dying billionaire JT Lance, a man with a dark secret, leads palliative nurse Rhianna McLeod to Jonathan, a man with his own troubled past, and Rhianna finds herself drawn to the handsome recluse, while unbeknownst to her, someone with a horrific plan is hunting her down.

Lancelot's Lady is available in ebook edition at KoboBooks, Amazon's Kindle Store, Smashwords and other ebook retailers. Help me celebrate by picking up a copy today and "Cherish the romance..."

Writers, what is your writing process? Full outline? No outline? Fly by the seat of your pants? Readers, how long do you think it takes most authors to write a novel?

Leave a comment here, with email address, to be entered into the prize draws. You're guaranteed to receive at least 1 free ebook just for doing so. Plus you'll be entered to win a Kobo ereader. Winners will be announced after October 10th.

    [ARC Review] - Nightshade

    Title: Nightshade
    Author: Andrea Cremer
    Series: Nightshade
    Genre: Young Adult
    Release Date: October 19, 2010

I received this book for review from Penguin/Philomel Books.

Summary:  Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers.

But when she violates her masters’ laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything - including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Thoughts: Ever since Calla was very young she knew what was expected of her. Graduate high school, mate with alpha Ren Laroche. A union which will bring an alliance between Nightshade and Bane, forming a third pack.  But when she breaks the law by saving a human boy... She starts a chain reaction that turns her world upside down and makes her question every aspect of her life.

Fantastic read, loved it! I love when a book lives up to all the anticipation. Nightshade is an enthralling story. Every minute of the story was pretty exciting, this is a book that once you start you won't want to put it down.  Very seductive and suspenseful. A heart-pounding story that leaves you on the edge of your seat, and most certainly leaves you want more.

Calla was great character, I liked her a lot. She's a warrior at heart, but there's a normal teenage girl just itching to break out.  All the characters are wonderful in their own way. But Ren and Shay both stand out for me.  Both want Calla and she feels something for both guys.  Now I can't wait to see what well happen next in this series. Ahh... more anticipation!

    Interview/Giveaway with Stephanie Draven

Hi Stephanie, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
Thanks so much for having me here today. I’m always excited to meet fellow book enthusiasts because its rare to find people who really share your passions, and I can get a little carried away with mine. For example, I recently visited the Library of Congress. It’s a little slice of heaven for book lovers, and when I walked into the exhibit of Thomas Jefferson’s original collection, I admit that I had to blink back tears! So, I may put on a tough-girl paranormal writer front, but inside, I’m a softie. And a cat lover. Can’t forget that.

Poisoned Kisses is your newest release, can you tells us a little about it and the Mythica series?
What if the monsters of ancient myth still walked the earth...and what if you found out you were one of them?

That was the tagline that started the Mythica series. It began with a little novella entitled Midnight Medusa, about a gorgon in love. The premise of that book ended up being the premise of the entire series--that being, war can turn men into monsters, sometimes, quite literally.

Each story in the series features a different monster of ancient mythology and can be read alone, but some they are all bound by a common thread. The hero of Midnight Medusa is Deimos, the ancient demi-god of fear. His sister, Kyra, is the heroine of Poisoned Kisses, so the stories touch without depending upon one another, if that makes sense.

Poisoned Kisses is the story of a dark nymph of the underworld who sets out to assassinate a dangerous shape-shifting arms dealer, only to fall in love with him when she realizes that he’s not the monster she thought he was. However, that doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous. Marco’s blood is the only thing in the world that can kill her, so she risks her life every time they kiss!

What is your writing day like?
Since making my first big sale, my writing habits have changed enormously. Now, instead of writing when I’m inspired, I make a goal. A first draft in 30 days is usually the plan for a category romance, so I wake up at some ungodly hour and write until I hit a certain word count. Sometimes I finish early and I have the rest of the day off. Sometimes I am still writing late into the night.

When your not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
I like to read stories by fellow up-and-coming authors, so that I know what’s hot in the genre. But when I’m reading purely for pleasure, I sometimes stray away from romance altogether and read something literary like David Malouf’s Ransom. Really, if anyone is seriously curious about what I read, I encourage you to friend me on Goodreads because that’s rapidly become my favorite social networking site. I’d rather chat with book lovers and readers more than anyone else!

Which Authors influence you the most?
That’s a really difficult question to answer because I’ve had the good fortune to learn under great teachers like Maureen McHugh and Nalo Hopkinson in the fantasy genre. When it comes to the Mythica series, I have to confess that it was Neil Gaiman’s American Gods that influenced me most. While I’m in awe of Gaiman, I didn’t particularly love American Gods. I thought it was a brilliant work, but it was a little too sterile for me. I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like if the story between the husband and his dead wife were actually one of passion, and it didn’t take me long to translate those ideas into the Mythica series for Harlequin.

Are there any real life people that have inspired the characters in your series?
I’m sure I’m not supposed to answer this question for fear of being sued, but since the person I’m thinking of has plenty of legal troubles of his own, I’ll go ahead and admit it. One of the villains in Poisoned Kisses is an African war god named Ogun who masquerades as a rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I consciously modeled him after General Laurent Nkunda who claimed to be protecting the Tutsi minority from the Rwandan war criminals still roaming free in the Congo. I thought he was an excellent example of a fighter who became the monster he set out to slay and just as I was finishing up the story, he was finally arrested.

I noticed the Greek Mythology links on your website, I love Greek Mythology myself. Do you have a favorite God or Goddess?
When I was younger, I was all about Apollo. Who doesn’t love a sexy sun god? But a few stories about Apollo turned me off, including the one where he slew all Niobe’s children. Also, the fact that he was chosen as Augustus’ patron deity gives him a definite prudish bent, and I can’t abide a priggish man. Consequently, I’ve changed my allegiance to Mercury, the sly, mischievous trickster god. Failing that, I’m going to go with grown-up Cupid, because the story of Cupid and Psyche is one of the earliest heroine-centric romances ever written.

What was it like learning you were getting your book published? What has been your favorite part of the process?
When I got that call from my agent telling me that Harlequin was making an offer, I’m not sure I really believed it. Not even after I signed the contract. The whole thing didn’t really sink in until I held the book in my hands, and I wrote an essay about what it’s like to hold your book for the first time.

As for my favorite part of the process, that’s easy. When readers read my books! Logging in to read a review, or open an email from someone who enjoyed my work is the absolute best thing. It’s worth more than money. It’s what authors live for. So if you have ever liked a book of mine or any other author, please write a review and let them know!

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
The first thing I need is Scrivener, which is a piece of writing software that helps me keep everything organized and plot out my story. The second thing I need is an outline. Some people are pantsers, but that way is dangerous for me, because I can quite easily spin a category novel into a giant tome if I don’t have a plan. The third, and perhaps most essential thing I need, is tea. Could be hot Earl Grey. Could be black tea on ice. Either way, I need it!

What is up next? Will you continue with a Mythica series or do have something new planned?
I have a novella entitled Siren Song coming out this winter and next year this time, my second full length installment of the Mythica series will be issued. I don’t have a title for it yet, but it’s about a tortured minotaur and a mysterious modern day sphinx.

Thanks for interviewing me, and I’d just like to remind your readers that I’m giving special peridot green charms to all my newsletter subscribers while supplies last, so if they’d like to participate, they should check out my virtual launch party.

    POISONED KISSES
    By Stephanie Draven

    Out Now!

He can wear the face of anyone who has ever hurt him…
This former soldier-turned-gun-runner thinks his true identity is safe, but a mysterious woman is about to force him to face the tragic past he thought he left behind.

She can disguise herself as the only woman he’s ever loved…
It’s not easy to be a Daddy’s Girl when your father is Ares, Greek God of War. To thwart her father and all those who serve him, Kyra intends to assassinate a modern day hydra. To kill him, she needs to seduce him, but Marco Kaisaris isn’t the monster she thinks he is–and even if he doesn’t break her heart, he may still be the death of her.

Can they see past each other’s masks to find a love that’s more than skin deep?

    About the Author:
Stephanie Draven is currently a denizen of Baltimore, that city of ravens and purple night skies. She lives there with her favorite nocturnal creatures–three scheming cats and a deliciously wicked husband. And when she is not busy with dark domestic rituals, she writes her books.

Stephanie has always been a storyteller. In elementary school, she channeled Scheherazade, weaving a series of stories to charm children into sitting with her each day at the lunch table. When she was a little older, Stephanie scared all the girls at her sleepovers with ghost stories.

She should have known she was born to hold an audience in her thrall, but Stephanie resisted her writerly urges and graduated from college with a B.A. in Government. Then she went to Law School, where she learned how to convincingly tell the tallest tales of all!

A longtime lover of ancient lore, Stephanie enjoys re-imagining myths for the modern age. She doesn’t believe that true love is ever simple or without struggle so her work tends to explore the sacred within the profane, the light under the loss and the virtue hidden in vice. She counts it amongst her greatest pleasures when, from her books, her readers learn something new about the world or about themselves. Stephanie also writes historical fiction as Stephanie Dray and has a series of forthcoming novels from Berkley Books featuring Cleopatra’s daughter.
