Review

Night Light- Amy Blankenship & R.K. Melton [4 Stars]

Shadowfever- Karen Marie Moning [4 Stars]
~~~Of course I did love this one. There were quite a few surprises, but there were some frustrating moments. I loved Mac & Jericho and I enjoyed reading about the MacKeltar's again (if you haven't read KMM's Highlanders series, I definitely recommend it.) And here's the but... I thought the book length could have been shorter that it was. I do look forward to what KMM will do next, she spins wonderful tales.
The Iron Queen- Julie Kagawa [4 Stars]
Shadow Touch- Marjorie M. Liu [4 Stars]
Vampire Knight
Description: Ten year earlier, a Pureblood vampire, Kaname Kuran, save Yuki Cross from another vampires attack. Now Yuki is a Guardian at Cross Academy, where the Night Class and Day Class students live side by side in relative harmony--despite the fact that the Night Class students are all vampires! Yuki and her partner Zero keep watch over the Day Class and protect the Night Class's secret. With Kaname's help, a peaceful coexistence has been maintained so far, but a looming shadow is about to be cast over their world...
Guest Blog & Giveaway with Sherry D. Ficklin
Today I have the pleasure of welcoming back Sherry D. Ficklin. Her latest book Military Brats: After Burn is out now!
So, it’s a new year which means new trends in the YA book market will be making their appearances soon. I have a love/hate relationship with book trends.  Sometimes we fall into a trend that I just don’t enjoy, but there is SO MUCH of it coming out that it’s hard to find anything else on the shelf. For example, I’m not a fan of the snobby rich kid private school books. Now, some are okay, but it’s just not my thing. Same with werewolf novels. There are a few I really got in to, but most I just don’t enjoy.
And maybe it’s a case of seeing something in those genres done differently. Something that catches my attention, sparks my imagination, makes me think about the genre in a new way.
Trends I love are, and please don’t throw things, but I love vampire novels. I’ve been a fan since Buffy and Interview with the Vampire. I will probably always love these novels. Same with epic fantasy books. I was raised on Dune, the Hobbit, and yes, Harry Potter.  I love these kinds of amazing stories.
Some new trends I’m seeing are, for one, the Steampunk stuff. I’m finding that I really enjoy it. Which makes sense when I look back at some of my favorite movies/TV shows of the past decade.  I’ve noticed a few zombie books making the rounds. I recently read Dead Beautiful, and I think it was the best sort of zombie but not really zombie book I’ve seen.
As a writer, it’s very tempting to write to the trends. Not necessarily because we are trying to ‘cash in’ on a hot genre, but because we are so influenced by what we see and what we read. I know that if all I’m reading is vampire books, my characters often end up being, ta-da, vampires.  I think at that is a double edge sword. See, it takes a year on average to get a book from an idea on my laptop to the bookstore shelf. A lot can change in a year. My first book, FORESIGHT was a mythological fantasy and when I started trying to sell it all I got was, “why are there no vampires in this book?” because this was just after the phenomenon that was Twilight overtook bookstores everywhere. With my most recent novel, I had a similar problem because no one could figure out what trend it fell into.
Military Brats: After Burn is a teen mystery, sort of a throwback to those classic Nancy Drew novels with a bit of Veronica Mars attitude.  Because it wasn’t fantasy and it wasn’t paranormal and it wasn’t Gossip Girl, it left people scratching their heads. People were quick to throw it in the teen romance genre, just because they weren’t sure what to do with it.
GIVEAWAY:
 So, you tell me. Is there a trend that you love/hate? What do you want to see more of on the bookshelves? One lucky commenter will win a Military Brats prize pack that includes stickers, magnets, bookmarks, and even a set of Military Brats dog tags.
[To enter the giveaway answer Sherry's question above, along with your email address. Open to U.S & Canada. The winner will be chosen on January 31st]
Thanks for stopping by and letting me rant! Good luck and as always, happy reading!
[ARC Review] - Visions of Magic
Title: Visions of Magic
Author: Regan Hastings
Series: Awakening
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: February 1, 2011
I received this book for review from the author.
Summary: Once, witches were thought to be the stuff of legend, but then Shea Jameson’s aunt was discovered to be a true witch and burned at the stake, the first of many modern-day witches to suffer a fiery fate. With paranoia running high throughout the world, Shea has been haunted by the Magic Police and the Federal Bureau of Witchcraft. They’re looking for any sign that she, too, has powers. But she doesn’t! Or at least, she didn’t … until the day a dangerous man got too close.
Now, struggling with powers she can’t control, Shea runs for her life with Torin, an Eternal who swears he can keep her safe, if only she’ll give herself to him in a mating ritual older than time itself. But can she trust this would-be rescuer with her heart? And can she believe him when he insists that she is the only person who can save the world?
Thoughts: Imagine if the witch hysteria of old came back into practice and the witch hunting was an everyday thing and it was global.....
In Shea Jameson's world magic and witches are not fun and it's not something you dabble or flaunt. Shea lives in fear. Always running, always hiding. For 10 years this has been her way of life. Ever since her aunt was burned at the stake for being a witch. Now Shea learns that she has powers and is forced to run again. In that moment, the warrior Torin walks in, changing Shea's life forever.
Lately I have seen a lot of books with covers that have blown me away, but the story ends up falling flat. That is not the case with Visions of Magic. It has beautiful cover and a outstanding storyline. Shea and Torin's story is wonderfully paced, from the first scene to the last. Visions of Magic has a great energy and it pulls your right into the story. An enthralling tale and a fascinating concept. Ms. Hastings has created a scary and exciting new world, one that I look forward to visiting again.
Interview & Giveaway with Chloe Neill
It's pleasure to welcome Chloe Neill, author of Chicagoland Vampires & the Dark Elite to my blog....
Hi Chloe, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
Thanks for having me! Sure. I'm originally from the southern part of the United States, but I now live in the Midwest with my soon-to-be-husband and our two dogs, Baxter and Scout. I have a day job, so writing is my evening "hobby." :)
Hexbound is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
HEXBOUND is the follow-up to FIRESPELL, which was the first book in the Dark Elite series. In HEXBOUND, Lily and Scout, students at St. Sophia's School for Girls, have discovered something nasty running about in the tunnels beneath the city and must use all their magical skills to deal with it.
What is your writing day like?
I have a day job, so I only write in the evenings and on the weekends. Usually it's a few hours on the couch with my laptop after dinner and chores.
When you're not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
I don't have a lot of time to read right now because of my writing schedule, but I really like Diana Gabaldon, Neil Gaiman and J.D. Robb.
What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
A laptop and two quiet dogs. :)
What inspired you the most when writing Hexbound?
Probably the opportunity to make a set of new spells and magical charms for Lily and Scout to use. I had a lot of fun putting those together!
If you had a magical talent like Lily's what would it be?
I have always wanted to fly!
Do you see Dark Elite having an end or do you feel it's an open ended series?
There are currently three books under contract, but there are definitely opportunities for the series to continue. I think there are lots of possibilities for Lily and Scout to continue getting into adventures.
Both Chicagoland Vampires & Dark Elite are active series for you, but can you tell us what is up next?
I am currently writing DRINK DEEP, the fifth book in the Chicagoland Vampires series. Once I'm done with that, I'll write the third Dark Elite book!
Thanks for having me today!
Out Now!
Lily Parker is new to St. Sophia’s School for Girls, but she’s already learned that magic can be your best friend…or your worst enemy.
They say absolute power corrupts absolutely. Turns out, even a little magic can turn you to the dark side. That’s why Lily has to learn how to control her newly discovered paranormal abilities, on top of avoiding the snobs who think they run her school, nursing a crush on a cute sophomore with a big, werewolf-y secret, and fighting the good fight with her best friend Scout as they take on Chicago’s nastiest nightlife—including the tainted magic users known as Reapers.
Then Lily’s invited to a private meeting with Sebastian. He’s hot, powerful, and offering to help her harness the magic flowing in her veins in a way no one else can. He’s also a Reaper. Lily can’t hide her suspicions. But she’ll soon find out that the line between good and evil isn’t always clear…
[Review] - Soul Magic
Title: Soul Magic
Author: Jennifer Lyon
Series: Wing Slayer Hunters
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Source: Purchased
Release Date: November 24, 2009
Summary:  KISS OR KILL
When an ancient pact is broken, powerful witches who once used their magic to help humanity become the twisted playthings of demons, and the mortal men who once protected the sorceresses become witch hunters, cursed with the longing to spill the witches’ blood: an irresistible craving that will cost witches their lives and witch hunters their souls.
The Wing Slayer Hunters fight this curse, guarding innocent witches until the urge to harm them grows too strong–then they must kill their own. Wing Slayer Sutton West has always honored that vow. His own father killed himself rather than go rogue. But now Sutton is tempted as never before by Carla Fisk, a brilliant psychologist and dynamic witch whose twin sister, Keri, was murdered by rogues.
Bound by blood and passion, Carla and Sutton dare not succumb to their deadly attraction. Yet when a mysterious rogue named Styx joins forces with the demon Asmodeus, witch and hunter have no choice but to work together. For Keri’s immortal soul is at stake–and with it, balanced on a knife-edge, is the fate of humanity itself.
Thoughts: Two years ago Carla's twin sister Keri was killed by a rogue and now her soul is stuck in a knife and she's not able to move on, to be at peace.  Both Carla and Sutton are connected to Keri, and their intense attracting to each other is almost more than they can handle. But to save Keri they must resist that attraction or she could be lost forever...
I love this series, The Wing Slayer Hunters are delicious! I read the first book (Blood Magic) when I was in a reading slump, and it only took me the first few pages and I was hooked.  I think I love this one even more than the first.  Carla and Sutton's coming together was really sweet. Also at the same time intense and heart wrenching. I love the action that comes with each book, the story is always moving.  The back story with the witches, rogues and the Wing Slayer Hunters is absolutely intriguing. I can't wait to read the next one. Ms. Lyon brings the action and the sexy with each story, in my opinion they are not to be missed.
Reading: Challenges & Goals
Normally I stay away from all reading challenges, I'm not sure why. But I think it's because some come with rules to the challenge that I don't want to deal with and I haven't found one that I really liked.  I am a big GoodReads person, I religiously use the site. It's a great way to keep track of my books.  They have the 2011 Reading Challenge going on There are no rules, and you have control over what your goal will be.
In 2009 I reached my highest goal at 308. In 2010 I didn't set a goal from myself, but did pretty good, reading 265 books.  This year I set my goal for 300 again.  I'm not sure if I'll get that many books read, but I'm gonna try hard to reach it. :)
If you interested in this challenge, you can find it here.
[Review] - Blue
Title: Blue
Author: Lou Aronica
Genre: Fantasy
Release Date: January 16, 2011
I received this book for review from the author.
Summary:  Chris Astor is a man in his early forties who is going through the toughest stretch of his life. Becky is Chris's fourteen-year-old daughter, a girl who overcame enormous challenges to become a vibrant, vital young woman - and now faces her greatest obstacle yet. Miea is the young queen of a fantasy land that Becky and Chris created when Becky was little, a fantasy land that has developed a life of its own and now finds itself in terrible, maybe fatal trouble.
Together, Chris, Becky, and Miea need to uncover a secret. The secret to why their worlds have joined at this moment. The secret to their purpose. The secret to the future. It is a secret that, when discovered, will redefine imagination for all of them. Blue is a novel of trial and hope, invention and rediscovery. It might very well take you someplace you never knew existed.
Thoughts: Much is involved in this book but.... Blue is a story of about Chris & his daughter Becky and what happens when their reality meets the fantasy world they created.   Blue was an enthralling tale, sweet and touching. A unique story.  The story explores life's challenges, magic, adventure, hope & possibility. I'm quite picky when it comes to fantasy, and this book is not something I wouldn't have picked up on my own, but I'm glad I got the chance to read about Chris and Becky's journey.    If you love when fantasy and reality collide, this book is for you.
Waiting On Wednesday [21] - Demonglass
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by
Breaking the Spine. A feature showcasing upcoming releases
that are eagerly anticipated.
My reasons for picking Demonglass for this weeks WOW are pretty simple. I loved loved the first book Hex Hall, it was one of my top books of 2010.  I can't wait to read what will a happen next with Sophie and her new found world.
Title: Demonglass
Series: Hex Hall
Release Date: March 1, 2011
Book Summary:
Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.
That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.
But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?
Interview & Giveaway with Judi Fennell
Hi Judi, Welcome back to Anna’s Book Blog! It's great having you here again. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I’ve been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, have written since my the raindrop story in first grade, always wanted to be an author but never thought it was possible, have a husband, kids, two alpha cocker spaniels who don’t always get along, a cat with a serious attitude, a full time job and never enough time to do what I want to do.
I Dream of Genies is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
The story idea came to me as I Dream of Jeannie meets Indiana Jones. I could hear the Indiana Jones theme song, and knew I wanted to incorporate the fun of the sixties’ sitcom. Other than that, I had no idea where the story was going to go until I started writing it. Turns out it’s got a baby dragon, a cat with an attitude, a couple of Egyptian and Persian gods and goddesses, screwy magic, deadly flowers, mythological beasts, and a cross-dressing High Master genie as well as the romance between Matt Ewing and his genie Eden. And I had an absolute blast writing it.
The rest of the series are unrelated books, unlike my Mer series which is about royal siblings, although Eden has met the hero of Genie Knows Best, but under rather auspicious circumstances—when they’re both being sentenced for the crimes they committed. Vana, the genie in Leave It To Genie, is just a fun character who’s been chatting with me all along, hoping I’ll get to her story quickly so she can end up with her happily ever after.
What was the last book your read or/ are currently reading?
I wish I had more time to read, but with a day job, a family, writing, and a life, not so much. The last ones I’ve read was Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning and Last to Die by Kate Brady (yes, I read more than one at a time. Thank God for the Kindle app on my iPhone.)
Which authors have influenced you the most?
When I first started out, it was the women I’ve grown up reading. Anne Stuart and Ann Mather – they were the first ones I’d pull off the library shelves. Then I found Jill Barnett and Jude Devereaux. Then came Julia Quinn. After her, there are so many I enjoy reading and just seeing the diversity and creativity is so empowering as an author, that people are reading across the board and if you want to have a talking cat or mythological beast in a story, there’s an audience.
When you're not writing, what do you like to spend your time doing?
Is it surprising if I say “read”? I love to read and if there’s a downside to being an author, it’s that I don’t have the opportunity to read as much as I want. And considering all the books I get at conferences and from writer friends, I have enough material.
I also like to watch reality TV. Why? I have no idea. I think I should have been a sociology or psychology major in school because the dynamics of watching people’s reactions to their 15 minutes of fame is mind-boggling.  I’m always amazed at how they’re so willing to talk or act badly in front of a camera.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
Ever since I could talk, I was making up stories. Casper the Friendly Ghost was my imaginary friend and my first story I ever wrote in first grade won some award. Then came Honorable Mention in the Caldecott Award, and my first romance novel in ninth grade, and, yeah, you could say I’ve always been writing. To be a published author, however, was something I never thought was attainable until I joined RWA and my local chapter. At my first meeting, I met a published author and was blown away that it was possible to become published.
What type of research did you do for this new series?
Twenty-some years ago, I was in a car accident and partially paralyzed for nine months. This was in the days before laptops, cell phones and On Demand TV. We lived on a 3rd floor apartment, with no elevator and no balcony about two hours from our families. The only thing I had to do was watch TV, and there was a channel that played episodes of I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Addams Family, Gilligan’s Island, Green Acres, The Munsters, etc. I think I saw every episode of each show and pulled on the pop culture perception of genies for the mortals’ reactions. Things like blinking their eyes to perform magic, having a blue djinni after them, Open Sesame. I also did research into the actually mythology of the djinn, but that delves into religious aspects and I wanted to steer clear of someone’s belief system. The djinn are tied  to Islam, so I walked a fine line of sticking close, putting my own twist on it, and offending someone. I picked my friend’s husband’s brain a lot. He’s Egyptian, a Muslim, and a native Arabic speaker so he was of invaluable help.
Between your Mers and the Genies, do you have a favorite character?
When I’m writing them, they’re never my favorite character—because I have to pull stuff out of them. When I’m done, oh, yeah, I love them all. The heroes, of course, because you have to fall in love with your hero or your reader won’t. The heroine because we all want to relate to her (see the part about falling in love with your hero), and the secondary characters because they don’t care what they say or do. They can be as snarky as they want, do whatever they want, and they don’t really have to be redeemed, though it is fun doing that, too. Chum, Livingston, Ginger, Stewart, A.J., Harry, Obo, Humphrey… I had a blast getting to know all of them. Trying to keep them corralled and not take over the story, on the other hand, was a bit tougher.
What inspired you to write a story about genies?
I have no idea. I just woke up one morning with the Indiana Jones theme running through my head and the idea of a genie who’d been sentenced to her bottle for 3000 years suddenly finding herself free, sat down, and started writing. Sometimes it just happens like that, though I’d love someone to study my subconscious and find out exactly what I was thinking to come up with that while I slept. LOL
Besides Books 2 & 3 (Genie Knows Best and Leave It To Genie) of the Genie series, do you have any other projects you can tell a us about?
At the moment, nothing is etched in stone (read: put in a contract), but readers are asking for Marianna and Pearl’s stories (part of the Mer series), and it turns out that Vana, the genie in Leave It To Genie has a twin sister (who knew?) who has a few issues of her own, so maybe I’ll head in that direction. We’ll have to see which way the (desert) wind blows.
[ARC Review] - I Dream of Genies
Title: I Dream of Genies
Author: Judi Fennell
Series: Genies
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: January 1, 2011
I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.
Summary:  He needs to change his luck, and fast!
Matt Ewing would gladly hunt down a fortune in lucky pennies if he thought it would help save his business. But for all his hoping, Matt’s clueless when his long awaited lucky charm falls in his lap in the form of a beguiling genie. He just can’t believe that this beautiful woman could be the answer to his prayers…
She’s been bottled up for far too long!
Spending 2,000 years in a bottle would make any woman go a little stir crazy. So when Matt releases Eden from her luxurious captivity, she’s thrilled to repay him by giving him the magical boost he needs…
But for all her good intentions, Eden’s magical prowess is a little rusty and her magical mistakes become more than embarrassing. And though Eden knows falling in love will end her magic and immortality, she can’t help but be drawn to the one man who wants her just for herself…
Thoughts: Eden is a genie and has spent the last 2,000 years in a bottle, and she's about had her fill of it and wants out.  She first spotted Matt while stuck in her bottle and has been crushing ever since.  Now poor Matt Ewing, his business isn't doing so great -- but he never thought what he was looking for was in a bottle.
I Dream of Genies is magical adventure, with action and a hot romance.  I love watching reruns of 'I Dream of Jeannie' so I was really curious what this book would be like. For me Ms. Fennell's books are pure fun, and that's definitely true with this one. I love the fantastical worlds she creates. This was a good read. If your looking for an escape, I  recommend giving this book a try.
Interview & Giveaway with Hailey Edwards
It's a pleasure to welcome Hailey Edwards to the blog.  Last March I got to review her book Everlong. Today she's here in celebration of the print release of Everlong.
Hi Hailey, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
Thanks for having me, Anna. Let’s see. I’m a bookworm, and I supported a book-a-day habit before I started writing. If my nose isn’t stuck in a book, then you can usually find me baking or playing with power tools.
Everlong is your latest release, can you tell us a little about it?
Everlong is the story of an Askaran princess named Madelyn. She’s rescued from an abusive family and given a second chance at life among escaped slaves in a colony on earth. Along the way, she becomes less self-absorbed and more self-aware. She also discovers the difference between infatuation and true, abiding love.
What is your writing day like?
My day starts around noon. My husband’s work schedule means I’m up all hours of the night and have an unusual routine. I hit the social networking sites to make sure I’m up to date on everything happening out there in the real world, then I dive into the make believe. I write, or study writing, at least four hours out of every day.
When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
Right now, I read almost exclusively fantasy and paranormal romance. I only discovered the romance genre about three years ago, so I’m still making up for lost time. I do have a deep love for urban fantasy and first person narratives. Really, any contemporary fantasy is good for me.
What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
My office! I bought a cute little netbook and can do nothing with the blasted thing. I have to be in my office, at my keyboard, to be productive. I also need white noise to block out my family (sorry guys). Last, I need a hand to hold. My critique partner, Cait, is always just an IM, text, or phone call away. She keeps me motivated and lets me know when I’ve gone too far or taken a wrong turn.
Since becoming published, what has been your favorite part of the process?
The best part of the actual publishing process is getting cover art. It’s like the icing on a cake. At that point, the book has been written, the edits are done, and now it’s time to see your novel dressed up to face the world.
There are so many talented cover artists out there, and it’s an amazing experience to see them translate your words into an image readers will identify with. Tuesday Dube created the cover for Everlong, and I couldn’t be happier with it.
What or Who inspired you the most when writing Everlong?
Cait and my friend Melanie were the two people cheering me on while I wrote Everlong. They both have so much more faith in me, and my writing, than I’ve ever had in myself.  Mel even sent me a little yarn Evanti demon. I got it in the mail the day before I got an email offer from Samhain. Harper Jr. is officially my good luck charm now.
If Everlong was being turned into a movie, who would be your choice of actors to play the lead characters?
Oh, wow. I have no idea. I don’t watch television often and rarely see a movie that isn’t a DreamWorks Animation production.
Are there any real life people that have inspired the characters in your series?
Yes. My friends and I have several running jokes about characters whose books have yet to be published. Their fascination with those characters keeps them alive for me.
What is up next? Is Everlong the first in a series?
I just wrapped up a new novel, Wicked Kin, about a fallen archangel turned soul harvester. The book is a twist on several creatures of heavenly origins and the hero’s decision between his duty to Hell and his love of a mortal woman whose soul he was sent to collect.
As for Everlong, I’m not sure that it will be the first in a series. There has been enough interest that I plan to write Harper’s side of the story eventually. I owe him that much.
EVERLONG
By: Hailey Edwards
Available in Paperback & eBook formats.
The most damaged heart can fly with the right pair of wings.
Madelyn’s life is far from fairytale perfect. She is second in line for the throne of a corrupt, brutal monarchy. Or at least she was until her dark guardian sacrificed his life to hide her safely in a realm of infinite possibilities.
For years she’s lived among a colony of escaped slaves as her guardian’s widow. Even in this simple life, though, nothing is as it seems. Her hero kept a secret—a younger brother named Clayton Delaney. Warrior, winged demon…and the man who now wants to lay claim to her heart.
No longer cast in his brother’s shadow, Clayton meets all obstacles head on, including one named Maddie. His infatuation with her reaches the breaking point when she undergoes a royal rite of passage, going into heat and pushing them both over the edge.
Just as Maddie learns that some risks are worth taking, she discovers that her guardian may be alive. And she’s forced to make a choice between the man she’d thought she loved, and the demon willing to lend her his wings.
Warning: This book contains virginal angst, a hero who’s too nice for his own good, wings, claws, and convenient use of glamour. It contains heartbreaking loss, conversation with a woodland creature, and sweet, sweet demon loving.
