[ARC Review] - It Happened One Bite

Title: It Happened One Bite
Author: Lydia Dare
Series: Regency Vampyre
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance
Release Date: March 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary:  HE'S LOST, TRAPPED, DOOMED FOR ETERNITY...

Rich, titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland, Lord Kettering, fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence--trapped for decades in an abandoned castle. Then beautiful Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives, and things begin to heat up considerably.

UNLESS HE CAN PERSUADE HER TO SET HIM FREE...

Feisty Blaire Lindsay laughs off the local gossip surrounding her mother's ancestral home--stories of haunting cannot scare off this battle-born witch. But when she discovers the handsome prisoner in the bowels of the castle, Blaire has no idea that she has unleashed more than a man who sets her heart on Fire.

Thoughts: Blaire Lindsay is visiting her mother's ancestral home in the Highlands for the first time.  She believes it's a waste of time, but goes with her brothers anyway.  She soon discovers  a beautiful gentleman, James Maitland trapped in the castle. He lights her fire in more ways than one - but she has no idea how dangerous he can really be.

I loved James & Blaire's journey, it was a steamy and dangerous adventure that included a history that goes back to the current coven's mothers. I especially liked Blaire,  she's my kind of heroine. She is fierce, independent and what ever you do, don't call her a lady. No sir, she is a warrior through and through, and ready for any battle.

It Happened One Bite was a fantastic read. First Ms. Dare gave us Lycans and now it's the vampire's turn. They are just as sensuous and delectably addicting as the Lycans.  If you've loved Ms. Dare's other books, you won't want to miss this one.

Score: 4 Stars

Interview with Kate O'Hegarty

Today I have the pleasure of being part of Kate O'Hegarty Blog Tour.
She is the author of Mieradome.

To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I’m Kate O’Hegarty. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Folklore & Mythology. I live in the Central Valley of California. My favorite color is blue. I love to read, especially non-fiction. I have traveled internationally since I was 7 years old. I’m in love with the 1920’s era, and I love a good cheese pizza!

Mieradome is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
Mieradome is ‘like a twisted Alice in Wonderland’, about a young faerie girl Amavia who is on a search of self-discovery. The book is essentially about good and evil and how that can sometimes over take us. It is also about the duality of our internal natures, the yin & yang. Mieradome will follow Amavia and her friends to see if Amavia can conquer this evil if she actually does become it.

What is your writing day like?
On most days I’ll get a cup of coffee from Starbucks and then sit and jot notes down for new chapters. Then later I’ll look through the notes and start typing on my very old laptop, getting a basic chapter set up. The next day I’ll probably add more to the chapter and try to make it more cohesive.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
I actually love to read non-fiction. I recently finished Trish Ryan’s memoir A Maze of Grace.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
   1. My laptop
   2. Tall Carmel Frappachino (no whipped cream) from Starbucks
   3. A notepad to write ideas down for chapters that I’ll work on later

Since Mieradome's release what has been your most memorable moment?
The most memorable moment is having readers say they have enjoyed reading my book! Spending years writing this and then hearing that people have really gotten into the story is the best I could ask for.

How did you come up with the idea for Mieradome? Were there any particular inspirations?
Most of my stories either come from dreams or my own life. For Mieradome, I had a dream about a girl in a bedroom looking out her window where a bright light zips past her ear and out into the dark of night. That little light ended up disappearing into a large oak tree. The dream made me wonder why that light would go in the tree, what the tree was hiding, and what the little light actually was. So in essence, I just expanded on the small idea I had and built a world around that. Mieradome was also inspired by my paternal family’s heritage and coat of arms. I have a video talking about that here.

In Mieradome there are a wide variety of characters. Is there one character you love the most?
As a baddie, I love Feig because he’s very sly and cunning. He is a changeling, so he can turn into anyone and everything. I like that idea that you’re not quite convinced Feig is up to any good.

Are there any real life people that have inspired the characters in your series?
Yes, there are characters based on people I know. My sister Shannon, who designed Mieradome’s cover, is Shannon Moana Hine in the book as a dog sled racer. An inside joke between my sister and I gave Ditto #3 (a postal bird) his name.

What is up next? Is Mieradome the beginning of a series or will you move on to another project?
I’m working on the sequel to Mieradome, which is called The Saskatoon Balloon! We even have a trailer for it already!

Out Now!

Mieradome pulls the reader into a unique fantasy world of faeries and technology, a different take on the Alice in Wonderland concept. The story revolves around a young girl named Amavia who believes she is a human girl, but slowly comes to find she is a faery in the world of Mieradome. Slowly who Amavia was began to unravel to show the truth; the truth that she just may be the evil they need to destroy. This is the first novel in a series, and gives a glimpse of what is to come for the main character Amavia.

[Series Spotlight/Giveaway] - Blood Bound

This month the Series Spotlight is on Blood Bound by Amy Blankenship & R.K. Melton. Blood Bound is a paranormal romance the revolves around several different types of supernatural creatures.  So, far I've read the first two books and I'm enjoying the series.

Moon Dance

Description:  Envy’s life was great. Great brother, great boyfriend, and the best job a girl could ask for… tending bar at the most popular clubs in the city. At least it was great until she got a call from one of her best friends about her boyfriend doing the vertical limbo on the dance floor at Moon Dance. Her decision to confront him begins a chain of events that will introduce her to a dangerous paranormal world hidden beneath the everyday humdrum. A world where people can transform into jaguars, real life vampires roam the streets, and fallen angels walk among us.

Devon is a werejaguar, a little rough around the edges and one of the joint owners of Moon Dance. His world is tilted on its axis when he spies an alluring vixen with red hair dancing in his club, armed with a cynical heart and a taser. With a vampire war raging around them, Devon vows to make this woman his… and will fight like hell to have her.

Amazon: Paperback & Kindle | Barnes & Noble: Paperback & Nook

Night Light

Description:  Quinn Wilder has watched her with the hungry eyes of a cougar since the day she was born. When she became a teenager, the temptation to claim her as his mate quickly became a rift between him and her overprotective brothers. When their fathers killed each other in battle, the ties between the two families were severed and she was taken safely out of his reach. Stalking her from a distance, Quinn finds the vampire war has its good points when she forgets to stay away.

Kat Santos hadn’t seen the owner of Night Light for years. That is until Quinn suddenly decides to kidnap her and accuse her of setting him up for the vampire murders. Realizing the enemy is playing them, the two families combine their strength to stop the vampires from terrorizing their city. As the underground war escalates, so do the flames of desire as what started out as a kidnapping quickly turns into a dangerous game of seduction.

Where to Buy:
Amazon: Paperback & Kindle | Barnes & Noble: Nook | Borders: Kobo

Dangerous Things

Description:  Everyone says there are two paths in life, but for Jewel Scott it looked like both of them were very dangerous. One led toward Anthony, a murdering psychopathic Werewolf who was also the head of the city mob and her fiancé… against her will.  The other road led toward Steven, a Werecougar whom she had knocked out with a baseball bat on their first meeting.  He retaliated by kidnapping her and making her his mate.

Steven Wilder had fallen for the bat-wielding temptress in more ways than just hitting the floor… he wanted to keep her. Finding out she was promised to the mob gave him the reason he needed to kidnap her and make her his mate… for her own protection, of course.

Anthony Valachi had become obsessed with Jewel when she was no more than a child and, under mob rule, he’d gained control of his bride to be. If anyone thought they could steal her away from him they were wrong… dead wrong.

Giveaway: Drought

Drought
By: Pam Bachorz

Book Description:

Ruby dreams of escaping the Congregation.
Escape from slaver Darwin West and his cruel Overseers. Escape from the backbreaking work of gathering Water. Escape from living as if it is still 1812, the year they were all enslaved.

When Ruby meets Ford--an irresistible, kind, forbidden new Overseer--she longs to run away with him to the modern world, where she could live a normal teenage live. Escape with Ford would be so simple.

But if Ruby leaves, her community is condemned to certain death.
She, alone, possess the secret ingredient that makes the Water so special--her blood--and it's the one thing that the Congregation cannot live without.

Drought is the haunting story of one community’s thirst for life, and the dangerous struggle of the only girl who can grant it.

[Review] - Moonlight Temptation

Title: Moonlight Temptation
Author: Stephanie Julian
Series: Lucani Lovers
Genre: Erotic/Paranormal Romance
Release Date: January 21, 2011

I received this book for review from Ellora's Cave.

Summary:  Evie Simmons has magical powers she can’t control and her best friend is a 17-year-old werewolf. It’d be hilarious if it weren’t just so damn depressing. Add in the sexy shifter she can’t keep out of her mind and his hot-as-hell friend and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Dane Dimitriou knows Evie has had a hard time adjusting to her new life in the Etruscan magical community—as difficult as his denial of his feelings for her have been. But he’s got the perfect cure. His best friend, easygoing Ryan Maguire, is the complete opposite of stick-up-his-ass Dane. He can act as a buffer. Dane can get close, but not too close. Yeah, right.

Together, these sexy men may be just what the doctor ordered for Evie.

Thoughts: Evie is fairly new to the Etruscan & Lucani communities. She also recently learned that magic is very real and that she herself is a Etruscan witch.  Since she is having trouble controlling her powers the other witches are trying to teach her as fast as possible.  It could be they are trying to drive her crazy.  When Dane & Ryan enter the picture (issues aside) - they aim to drive her crazy in other ways.

Moonlight Temptation is a delicious romp. Evie's lack of magic control and the mouth-watering Lucani mates make for one hot, engaging story. This is the fourth installment in the series and I have to say it's still going strong. Each story keeps me coming back for more.  Ms. Julian aims high and hits the mark every time.

Interview with Pam Bachorz

Today I'm welcoming Pam Bachorz to my blog. She is the author of Candor and her latest release is Drought.

Hi Pam, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! It's a pleasure to have you here today.

Drought is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it?
DROUGHT is the story of a girl named Ruby who’s trapped in the woods of upstate New York as a slave to the evil Darwin West. Ruby has a big secret: her blood has been keeping the members of her Congregation alive for two hundred years, while they collect water for Darwin. Ruby wants her Congregation to fight, but they’re waiting for their savior (and her father) to return and free them. When she falls in love with one of Darwin’s guards, she has some big decisions to make about how to help the Congregation… and be happy.

What is your writing day like?
Well, I work a full-time job and I’m also the mother to a kindergartner, so I have to schedule my writing time. I set aside at least ten hours every week to write, and the times vary depending on what else is going on. Most often I start the day with an hour of writing, and also write during a few evenings after my Little Dude is in bed. When I can, I’ll steal a few hours during the weekend to write.

When your not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
I pretty much exclusively read YA and middle grade novels. I tend to favor scary/fantastical/sci-fi stories but I’ll pick up anything with good writing. I love to be sucked in and surprised by something that I never would have thought I’d be intrigued by.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
First, I’ve got to have music—sometimes I make playlists and sometimes I listen to what I call “brain music”: the kind of stuff you might hear in a spa or uber-granola gift shop!

Second, must have my outline and character profiles. That’s where I start before I write any part of my story. I return to them every time I sit down to write, just to refresh my memory.

Third, tea and chocolate.

How did you come up with the idea for Drought? Were there any particular inspirations?
As hokey as it sounds, a vision started this story. I was driving along a country road in upstate NY and I passed a dilapidated barn. In a flash, I imagined there was a table in the middle of that barn—with a cup of water in it.  A drop of blood fell into that cup.

For a long time, I didn’t know whose blood it was, or why it was going in the water. I made a lot of false starts before I got into the story that DROUGHT became.

Since becoming published, what has been your favorite part of the process?
I love hearing from people who have enjoyed my work. It’s a great reminder of why I make that writing schedule, and stick with it, even when the world is banging on my door. I’m doing this to entertain people and pull them out of their own worlds, if only for a little while. So when I succeed at that, it’s very rewarding.

What is your favorite thing about writing YA books?
You can’t waste ink with YA: you have to start strong and keep the reader hooked. That’s a fun challenge and it’s my favorite kind of story to read, too.

If Drought was optioned to be made into the film who would you like to see playing the parts of Ruby and Ford?
I am a huge TV and movie junkie, but I have not yet seen any actors who really fit my idea of what Ruby and Ford are like. I do know I’d cast Kim Raver to play Sula, and Neal McDonough (of Desperate Housewives villain fame) to play Darwin West.

What is up next? Is Drought the beginning of a series?
If I had the opportunity to write another DROUGHT novel, I’d be thrilled to do it. But for now I’m working on an entirely new YA concept—a new world and new characters who are very different from what I’ve done before. That’s been a lot of fun and just scary enough to make me think I’m going in the right direction!

[ARC Review] - Pale Demon

Title: Pale Demon
Author: Kim Harrison
Series: The Hollows
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: February 22, 2011

I received this book for review from Harper Collins/EOS through Library Thing Early Reviewers.

Summary:  Condemned and shunned for black magic, Rachel Morgan has three days to get to the annual witches’ conference and clear her name, or be trapped in the demonic ever-after . . . forever after.

But a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car going across the country? Talk about a recipe for certain disaster, even without being the targets for assassination.

For after centuries of torment, a fearsome demon walks in the sunlight—freed at last to slay the innocent and devour their souls. But his ultimate goal is Rachel Morgan, and in the fight for survival that follows, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.

Thoughts: Rachel is headed for San Francisco to take part in her brother's wedding. But before she can do that she must attend the Annual Witches Convention to clear her name.  Before she leaves town things start to fall apart quickly and she is reduced to sharing a ride with Trent Kalamack.  With assassins on their tail, it'll be a miracle if Rachel and company make to California in one piece.

This is the 9th book in The Hollows series, and it's still fresh and exciting as ever.  Pale Demon is a roller coaster ride, and I loved every minute.  An epic road trip that changes everything.  Kim Harrison is a master at capturing the reader.  She writes amazing characters that find their way to your heart, even the villainous ones.

There are so many things I'm eager to say about the book, but everyone would be a spoiler. This installment really wowed me, maybe even more than the previous books. I loved and hated the ending.  Loved it for what it might bring in the future and hated because it was the end of the book. When it comes to this series I always want more. It's definitely a must read.

I recommend both this book and the series. But if you are new to this series, I highly recommend you start with book one: Dead Witch Walking.

It's a pleasure to welcome author, Marsha A. Moore to my blog today...

Hi Marsha, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I live near Tampa, having moved here from Toledo, Ohio, officially during the summer of 2009. I stayed the previous winter helping my mother get settled into her house in a neighboring community. Who wouldn’t want to escape winter in the Midwest? I’m still feeling like a little kid, learning and loving all the wonders of life in a sub-tropical place. I LOVE the beach and can’t possibly be there too often.

Otherwise, I’m a yoga enthusiast and do routines in classes or at home five days a week. The other days I’m out bicycling or kayaking. I recently purchased a used kayak—my favorite new toy! We live on a large saltwater lagoon and taking it out for an hour or more is a real treat. It’s just the coolest thing to be able to kayak during winter. I always exercise as part of my daily routine and have for at least a decade. It gives me so much. It clears my mind, so I my writing time is considerably more focused and effective. Also, it takes me on journeys inside my mind or outside in nature that bring me an endless supply of new writing ideas. I write fantasy romance. Those journeys supply a wealth of magic.

Tears on a Tranquil Lake is your newest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
Blurb:

What a surprise for a young woman, to find herself suddenly transformed into a mermaid.

Ciel’s first thought – track down the merman who changed her and make him reverse his magic. Unable to find him, survival in her new world becomes paramount. She eagerly accepts help from a dashing pirate captain who takes a fancy to her, lavishing her with finery.

When her merman does show up, he competes for her affection. One look into his eyes makes her life more complex -- he is her soul mate.

Which man will she choose – pirate captain or merman? Which life – human or mermaid? Caribbean adventures and dangers chase Ciel as she searches for decisions and the key to her happiness.

Warning: This book contains Haitian vodou, sultry wenches, foul-mouthed scalliwag pirates, overindulgence of fine Caribbean rum, and amorous encounters on deserted beaches.

What is your writing day like?
A typical day for me is getting up around 8 AM, reading mail and keeping up with my networking/promotional work. Then I exercise. After that, my afternoon is all about household chores and editing. I’m a night owl and do most of my focused writing after dinner, usually staying up until 2 AM.

What type of research did you do for the book?
During the winter of 2008-9, I moved my mother from NW Ohio to Tampa. It didn’t take much to convince me to stay through the winter to help her get settled before I moved my own household the following summer. My first Florida winter inspired me to write my book Tears on a Tranquil Lake. I enjoy folklore and legend, and sought interesting local tales. When I learned about the annual Tampa Gasparilla Festival, the celebration of famed pirate Jose Gaspar’s invasion of the Bay area, I was captivated and a pirate captain, a mermaid, and a merman became the characters of my book.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
I usually need to connect with nature. My very best writing days are at the beach. Conveniently, I live south of Tampa and can easily find many lovely beaches nearby. Even if I can’t get away to the beach, I often create new drafts outside in the backyard on our dock on a large saltwater lagoon. The brown pelicans have a lot of personality and make great writing companions!

Also, I prefer to exercise to clear my mind before writing. Then, I seem to be better able to put aside daily annoyances and manipulate plot layers.

Third, I need a longer expanse of time to write productively, at least an hour.  Some writers effectively use 15 minute segments, but I cannot.

What inspired you to write about mermaids?
    (see above about research)

If you could be any paranormal or fantasy creature what would it be?
I would love to be a phoenix bird. I’m enthralled with their mythic process of death and rebirth, usually for the cause of some good. Not only that, they are so beautiful, brightly-colored with tail feathers dripping flames. I often include magical birds in my works. Tears on a Tranquil Lake features a brown pelican who befriends my heroine, a mermaid named Ciel. The sequel will include a magical parrot. Another work out on submission, The Enchanted Bookstore: Seeking a Scribe, has a magical owl, as well as my favorite--a phoenix.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
I like to read classics or books in my own genre, fantasy romance or straight fantasy. I like paranormals, but tend to avoid vampire and shapeshifter themes, since they seem overdone to me. I look for characters having unusual magical abilities, especially those not so well-defined, so the author has more creative license.

Which Authors have influenced you the most?
I’m a huge J.K.Rowling fan. I admire the complex layering within her Harry Potter series that was designed and carried out to appear so deceptively simple.

In my formal literature studies I spent much time reading classics. The romantic period of literature captivated me.  I’ve read the entire Thomas Hardy catalog. I spent years engrossed in reading George Elliot, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Fenimore Cooper, and Washington Irving. I love how they elevated setting to the level of importance of a main character. Their richly textured settings inspire me enormously. The influences of those works infuse my own writing.

What is up next? Is Tears on a Tranquil Lake the beginning of series or will you move on to something else?
My next MuseItHot release, Sea Glass and Sand Memories, a short story, will be available June, 2011.

I just finished the sequel to Tears on a Tranquil Lake, and then I’ll write a third with those same characters. I have a time travel fantasy romance, Illusions of Intimacy, half done, that I intend to finish before the end of the year. Also, part two in my fantasy romance series, The Enchanted Bookstore, will definitely be written in 2011. Lately, I’ve had a few pesky, but wonderful, new characters pop into my head. They’re chasing me around with plot ideas for a dark paranormal novel, so I may have to fit them into my schedule. That’s plenty to keep me happy and busy for a while!

Waiting On Wednesday [23] - Hounded

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly post started by Breaking the Spine. A feature showcasing upcoming releases that are eagerly anticipated.

I recently learned of Hounded and glad I did. The cover is brilliant. But what really caught my attention were the words "druids" and "celtic god" It sounds like it's gonna be an interesting read. Can't wait to read it.  :)

Title: Hounded
Series: The Iron Druid Chronicles
Author: Kevin Hearne
Release Date: April 19, 2011

Book Summary:

Atticus O’Sullivan has been running for two thousand years and he’s a bit tired of it. After he stole a magical sword from the Tuatha Dé Danann (those who became the Sidhe or the Fae) in a first century battle, some of them were furious and gave chase, and some were secretly amused that a Druid had the cheek to defy them. As the centuries passed and Atticus remained an annoyingly long-lived fugitive, those who were furious only grew more so, while others began to aid him in secret.

Now he’s living in Tempe, Arizona, the very last of the Druids, far from where the Fae can easily find him. It’s a place where many paranormals have decided to hide from the troubles of the Old World—from an Icelandic vampire holding a grudge against Thor to a coven of Polish witches who ran from the German Blitzkrieg.

Unfortunately, the very angry Celtic god who wants that sword has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power, plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good, old-fashioned luck of the Irish to kick some arse and deliver himself from evil.

[ARC Review] - Madame Tussaud

Title: Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution
Author: Michelle Moran
Genre: Historical Fiction
Release Date: February 15, 2011

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary:  The world knows Madame Tussaud as a wax artist extraordinaire . . . but who was this woman who became one of the most famous sculptresses of all time? In these pages, her tumultuous and amazing story comes to life as only Michelle Moran can tell it. The year is 1788, and a revolution is about to begin.

Smart and ambitious, Marie Tussaud has learned the secrets of wax sculpting by working alongside her uncle in their celebrated wax museum, the Salon de Cire. From her popular model of the American ambassador, Thomas Jefferson, to her tableau of the royal family at dinner, Marie’s museum provides Parisians with the very latest news on fashion, gossip, and even politics. Her customers hail from every walk of life, yet her greatest dream is to attract the attention of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI; their stamp of approval on her work could catapult her and her museum to the fame and riches she desires. After months of anticipation, Marie learns that the royal family is willing to come and see their likenesses. When they finally arrive, the king’s sister is so impressed that she requests Marie’s presence at Versailles as a royal tutor in wax sculpting. It is a request Marie knows she cannot refuse—even if it means time away from her beloved Salon and her increasingly dear friend, Henri Charles.

As Marie gets to know her pupil, Princesse Élisabeth, she also becomes acquainted with the king and queen, who introduce her to the glamorous life at court. From lavish parties with more delicacies than she’s ever seen to rooms filled with candles lit only once before being discarded, Marie steps into a world entirely different from her home on the Boulevard du Temple, where people are selling their teeth in order to put food on the table.

Meanwhile, many resent the vast separation between rich and poor. In salons and cafés across Paris, people like Camille Desmoulins, Jean-Paul Marat, and Maximilien Robespierre are lashing out against the monarchy. Soon, there’s whispered talk of revolution. . . . Will Marie be able to hold on to both the love of her life and her friendship with the royal family as France approaches civil war? And more important, will she be able to fulfill the demands of powerful revolutionaries who ask that she make the death masks of beheaded aristocrats, some of whom she knows?

Spanning five years, from the budding revolution to the Reign of Terror, Madame Tussaud brings us into the world of an incredible heroine whose talent for wax modeling saved her life and preserved the faces of a vanished kingdom.  (description from author's website & Amazon)

Thoughts: For some reason I always thought Madame Tussaud was an aristocrat. But she was a commoner, and she had an amazing talent to mold wax perfectly.  In 1788 she caught the eye of royalty.  Marie Grosholtz (as she was known then) was a witness to the French Revolution. She was there when it was being planned, when it all started and when it happened.

Madame Tussaud is both a vibrant and dark story.  A brilliant book. Once I started it I had a hard time stopping.  It evokes a whirlwind of emotions and captivates the reader. Whenever reading a book by Michelle Moran, I'm always in awe. Whether it's Ancient Egypt or France during the French Revolution she opens up the world and takes you to that very time and moment.

One of the things I found interesting was the way many of the males in the book treated Marie. Because they were so impressed with her talent with waxworks - they treated her as an equal. She was there for political talks and discussions that lead to the revolution. For the time that it was most women were mostly expected to stay quiet and in the kitchen. But because of what Marie could do she had more opportunities open up for her.  She was a strong independent women, a survivor and I very much think she was a women ahead of her time.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Michelle Moran

I'm excited to welcome back Michelle Moran to my blog. She is the author of Nefertiti, The Heretic Queen, Cleopatra's Daughter and her latest release is Madame Tussaud, A Novel of the French Revolution...

MADAME TUSSAUD: The Woman

When most people hear the name Madame Tussaud, the first thing that comes to mind are the eerily lifelike waxworks which crowd her museums throughout the world. But who was the woman behind the name, and what was she like in the flesh?

Madame Tussaud’s story actually began in 18th century Paris. While most people know her from her famous museum in London, it was in France, on the humble Boulevard du Temple, where Marie first got her start as an apprentice in her uncle’s wax museum, the Salon de Cire. At the time, the Boulevard du Temple was crowded with exhibits of every kind. For just a few sous a passerby might attend the opera, watch a puppet show, or visit Henri Charles’ mystifying exhibition The Invisible Girl. The Boulevard was a difficult place to distinguish yourself as an artist, but as Marie’s talent grew for both sculpting and public relations, the Salon de Cire became one of the most popular attractions around. Suddenly, no one could compete with Marie or her uncle for ingenious publicity stunts, and when the royal family supposedly visited their museum, this only solidified what most showmen in Paris already knew — the Salon was an exhibition to watch out for.

But as the Salon’s popularity grew, so did the unusual requests. Noblemen came asking for wax sculptures of their mistresses, women wanted models of their newborn infants, and – most importantly – the king’s sister herself wanted Marie to come to Versailles to be her wax tutor. While this was, in many ways, a dream come true for Marie, it was also a dangerous time to be associated with the royal family. Men like Robespierre, Marat, and Desmoulins were meeting at Marie’s house to discuss the future of the monarchy, and when the Revolution began, Marie found herself in a precarious position. Ultimately, she was given a choice by France’s new leaders: to preserve the famous victims of Madame Guillotine in wax, or be guillotined herself.

Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution is the story of Marie’s life during one of the most tumultuous times in human history. Her survival was nothing less than astonishing, and how she survived makes for what I hope is a compelling read.
