[ARC Review] - Heart of the Highland Wolf

Title: Heart of the Highland Wolf
Author: Terry Spear
Series: Werewolf
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary:  It’s a matter of pride…

Modern day werewolf laird Ian MacNeill reluctantly allows a film production company to use his castle, but he knows his secretive clan has a big problem when a beautiful red werewolf female who insists she’s working on the film keeps showing up in the wrong places…

and a matter of pleasure…

Julia Wildthorn is not who she says she is—she’s sneaking into Argent Castle to steal an ancient relic for her grandfather and to do research for her next werewolf romance novel. When she catches a glimpse of Ian, she realizes he’s the perfect hero…

Thoughts: This latest installment in the werewolf series is one of my favorites, along with the first book Heart of the Wolf. There is always something fresh and exciting with each new book. I love shifter stories so I'm glad this series hasn't gotten old for me.

Heart of the Highland Wolf was a tantalizing read. A story that had a wonderful blend of romance and suspense.  Terry Spear's sexy alpha heroes and strong heroines make for one delicious recipe.  With this book the hero is a highlander and the setting is in Scotland and for me that is like the cherry on top.  One of the great things about this series is you don't necessarily have to read this series in order. If you love shifters you have to check out this series.

Score: 4 Stars

[ARC Review] - Shadow Touch

Title: Shadow Touch
Author: Erin Kellison
Series: Shadow
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 2011

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary:  Magic
It is bleeding into our world, bringing with it banshees, wraiths, fae from the twisting forests of Twilight. But Ellie's problem is a very different kind of phenomenon...

Shadow
It ought to be attached to her; instead it has a life of its own. And her dark mirror image is a wild thing, willfully seducing the very man Ellie hoped could help.

Science

Cam has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and the Hereafter. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two.

Surrender
Who will give in first: the man struggling to unite two halves of one fascinating female; the shadow fighting for freedom to experience the thrill of every emotion; or the woman who is about to discover her own deepest desires?

Thoughts: Ellie has a bit of a problem she has a shadow with her 24/7 A much darker version of herself. With no concerns whatsoever... the shadow is a bit of a trouble maker and quite cheeky.  So, Ellie seeks out the Seque Institute for help.

This story thoroughly pulled me in. It's been a while since reading the last book, so it was nice venturing back into the world of Shadow. A quick, but thralling read. Shadow Touch was a great story, a bit different than the previous books.  I love Kellison's voice and the darkness to the story. If you have enjoyed the first two books in this series you won't want to miss Ellie & Cam's story.

Score: 4 Stars

Upcoming Releases:
Shadowman- September 2011

Shadow Touch is an ebook novella.

Interview & Giveaway with Lisa Renee Jones

Today It's a pleasure to welcome Lisa Renee Jones to my blog. She is the author of The Legend of Michael, the first book in The Zodius series.

Hi Lisa, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
LRJ: I write full time and moved to Colorado recently for my fiancé to go to medical school here. I was born in Springfield, Illinois and moved to Texas when I was three. I consider myself a Texan but have tons of family in Illinois and I'm excited about the RT Booklovers Convention in Chicago next year so I can see them. And for of you UFC fans out there, my mom and aunt went to school with Matt Hughes's father in Illinois! My mom even got my son an autograph from Matt recently. I had to complain considering I'M the big UFC fan! My aunt was just at an event where Matt attended and she says he is as nice and down to earth as a person gets

The Legend of Michael is your latest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
LRJ: The Zodius series is about a group of Special Forces soldiers who are given injections at Area 51. They believe they are being immunized but instead the government is playing with their DNA. They develop special abilities, and some of them decide that makes them better than everyone else, thus the logical true leaders of the world. A battle of good versus evil ensues.

What is your writing day like?
LRJ: I moved from Texas to New York to Colorado in a matter of 24 months and the time zones really messed with me. I tend to start writing around 2 o’clock each day and then hit the gym about 10 at night. I never seem to get to bed until 3am which is nuts since I used to take the 6am Austin flight to Dallas 4 days a week back in my corporate days!

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
LRJ: I love reading all genres. I am also a huge Audible fan and often listen to audio books while at the gym. I love a good historical romance because I can't write that genre! But I am really taken away from craft and simply get to enjoy a good book.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
LRJ: My cat by my side—she is my writing partner, a diet drink, and a radio. I like to listen to music while writing.

You have quite a few books in your back list, do you still get the same thrill when learning your latest manuscript will be published as you did with your first book?
LRJ: I do. I'm really on a journey. This year I had my first trilogy and my first single title. Those things were as exciting as the first book.

If you could cast the role of Michael, is there a certain actor who you think would be perfect to play him?
LRJ: Jason Momoa—in the role of Conan! He is wicked hot and lethal, with all that long dark hair, just like Michael.

How did you come with the idea for the Zodius series?
LRJ: I spent a lot of time in Vegas and Area 51 was always fascinating. My ex came from a family of Special Forces as well so I was around a lot of Special Forces soldiers.

I love the cover art, how well did they capture Michael on the cover? Is there anything you'd change about it?
LRJ: Michael has long hair so I was a little worried about that when I saw the cover, but I really do love it! I absolutely adore the colors and they designed the Zodius logo so very perfect. That double circle is what the Lifebond mark looks like that appears on the female’s neck when she bonds with the male. I was just beside myself excited to see it!

If you can, tell us what is up next for you?
LRJ: I have a Harlequin Spice Brief trilogy going into stores in June, July, August and then the second Zodius book, The Storm That is Sterling, is out in November. The Spice Briefs are contemporary and very erotic. I'm super excited about Sterling's Zodius book in November. Sterling is one of my all-time favorite heroes I have written.

Giveaway: Minding Ben

Minding Ben
By Victoria Brown

At sixteen, Grace Caton boards her first airplane, leaving behind the tropical papaya and guava trees of her small village in Trinidad for another island, this one with tall buildings, graceful parks, and all the books she can read. At least that's what Grace imagines. But from the moment she touches down, nothing goes as planned. The aunt who had promised to watch over her disappears, and Grace finds herself on her own.

Grace stumbles into the colorful world of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, having been taken in hand, sort of, by a fellow islander, Sylvia. Here, she's surrounded by other immigrants also finding their way in America.

From her Orthodox Jewish landlord, Jacob, to her wannabe Jamaican friend, Kathy, who feels that every outfit can be improved with a Bedazzler and a low-cut top, there's much to learn about her new city.

Most challenging of all is figuring out her new employers, the Bruckners, an upper-middle-class family in Manhattan. The job is strange Grace's duties range from taking daily nude photos of her pregnant boss (a shock to her, since she's never even seen her own mother naked) to dressing in a traditional maid's costume to serve Passover seder. But Grace loves four-year-old Ben, and she's intrigued by the alternately friendly and scheming nannies who spend their days in Union Square Park, and by their constant gossip about who's hired, who's fired, and who, scandalously, married her boss.

As the seasons change, Grace discovers that the Bruckners have surprising secrets of their own, and her life becomes increasingly complicated and confusing. But opportunities appear in the most unexpected places, and Grace realizes that she's living in a city and a world where anything is possible.

GIVEAWAY:
Thanks to Hyperion Books I have an ARC of Minding Ben to giveaway.  To enter leave a comment along with your email address. Open to U.S. & Canada. Winner will be announced on May 21st. Good Luck!

[Review] - Dark Descendant

Title: Dark Descendant
Author: Jenna Black
Series: Descendants
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: April 26, 2011

I received this book for review from Simon & Schuster.

Summary:  Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . . Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s man hunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali, who thinks she’s a spy.

But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . . .

Thoughts: Originally I didn't have this book on my to buy list. But when I received it for review, the summary really piqued my interest - especially with the mythology that is involved.

Dark Descendant is a fantastic read and really took me by surprise. I absolutely loved the flow of the story. It was both fast and engaging. I have read some of Ms. Black's books before but none of her UF titles. She has taken mythology from different pantheons and created a most intriguing world.  Great cast of characters. I loved the lead Nikki, she was a strong character, but also has a vulnerability to her.   The mysterious Anderson and "I'm crazy but I don't mean to be" Jamaal are two characters I hope to read more about.  I definitely recommend this one.

Score: 4 Stars

Interview with Renee Ahdieh

Hi Renee, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
I am definitely a right-brained person.  I adore creative outlets, and most of my hobbies/obsessions are centered on it: reading, painting, cooking, traveling, dancing . . . just to name a few.  Music is a huge passion for me.  I’m equally at home listening to Janos Starker playing Dvorak and the latest endeavor of Konvict Muzik.  My mother is South Korean, and I married a Persian, so understanding and experiencing many different cultures has been an integral part of my life.  As can be expected, books have been a part of my family for as long as I can remember.  When I was a young girl, Alcott’s Little Women was a personal favorite, and I still read it every year at Christmas.  On the flip side, I suck at math, and I will only run if someone is chasing me.  Lists are meant to be lost.  Yoga is my idea of exercise, and I exercise so that I can eat!  I live in North Carolina, and I’m a dreaded twenty-something.  I swear we’re not that bad, and we only bite if it looks tasty.

Fanfare is your newest release, can you tell us a little about it?
Would it be too trite if I say it’s a labor of love?  Eh, I’ll go with it.  I think that any time you pour your creative soul into something, it becomes extremely personal.  For me, Fanfare was written to be a “cozy” . . . this is the kind of book I love to grab and sit with on a rainy, quiet day.  No interruptions.  No brainpower necessary.  Just fun and satisfying.  If a book can make me laugh, cry, sigh, and squeal, I think it’s had a successful run.  This was my goal with Fanfare.  I wanted to bring to life a modern Jane Austen tale – something a mother could read with her teenage daughter and not feel as though she had infringed onto her world or vice versa.  It was also extremely important for me to write something with a diverse cast of characters.  My heroine is Latina, and I would love to see more books with characters that reflect the beautiful heterogeneity of our world.  Of course, I also stole inspiration from the world of celebrity.  I especially noticed the huge cult following of stars like Robert Pattinson.  It made me wonder what it would actually be like to date someone famous.  As you can see in Fanfare, it’s not always a picnic!!

What is your writing day like?
I think it’s very important to be intentional with your surroundings.  Writing for me is 80% in my mind and 20% on my computer.  I need to be in a place where I can fully indulge myself in introspection.  It’s beautiful when you can be lost in your imagination.  When a scene or a story forms in my mind, I write the rough sketch down immediately.  I also find myself asking how a particular character would react to a given situation.  Learning about your characters and making them more than actors in a tale is an integral part in furthering along the creative process.  Plus, it makes them that much more real.  Having the support of people around me is huge.  I honestly don’t know what I would do without that.  On a good day, I can write 3,000 to 5,000 words, but this is mostly because I allowed myself the time to imagine my story for days beforehand.  Loose outlines work well for me, and I never let three days go by without writing SOMETHING.  I also love to have people read and offer feedback.  The picture I painted may be crystal clear in my head, but a good writer is able to articulate a similar image in everyone’s head, and I need others to make certain that I’ve successfully done that.  Self-reliance is important, but I do not let it outweigh the need to challenge myself to grow as a writer.

When you’re not writing, what kind of books do you like to read?
Eek!  I depends on the day, the time of year, and what I’m in the mood for.  Obviously, I mostly read fiction.  I love almost every genre of fiction.  Right now, I’ve thoroughly hopped aboard the paranormal train.  I can’t get enough of it.  I tore through Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, and I just bought my Kindle copy of Charlaine Harris’ newest Southern Vampire Mystery (TEAM ERIC, all the way).  That being said, I also enjoy the occasional legal thriller and true crime story.  Psychological portraits have always intrigued me.  I just read all of Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy.  He’s a heckuva storyteller.  Classics are huge for me, too.  Shakespeare, Austen, Hawthorne, etc.  Gone With the Wind is a personal favorite.  If it has a strong female character, I’m bound to read it!

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
My computer.  My copy of Explosions in the Sky’s The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place (it’s a CD of my favorite band).  Peace of mind.

Since becoming published, what has been your favorite part of the process?
Connecting with readers!  I LOVE talking to people about my book, and it is the most amazing thing to hear that someone loved what I wrote.  When I started receiving emails that people had stayed up all night to finish Fanfare, it literally made me skip around the next day with indissoluble glee.  I think that to a writer, there is no greater gift than the knowledge that the story you wrote with the characters you gave life to were beloved to someone else, even if for only a moment.

What inspired you the most when writing Fanfare?
My friends and my family . . . my husband was a huge inspiration for developing the character Tom.  Real life inspiration rings true to me on the pages of books.  Yes, I realize my husband is not a movie star, but he’s the rock star in my life, so that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

Did you have any input when it came to designing the cover?
Yes, but the concept was wholly my publisher’s work.  I think it turned out amazing!  My favorite parts are the camera flashes and the cherry blossoms.

What is up next for you? Is Fanfare the beginning of a series?
More writing!  I have several different things I’m working on now, and I can’t wait to see what is finished next.  I hope to be doing a lot to promote Fanfare, and we are looking to set up a few blog tours and bookstore signings, so I’d love to meet anyone at your nearest Barnes and Noble!  Fanfare is not the beginning of a series, but it is definitely the beginning of making a career out of a passion, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity.

FANFARE
By Renee Ahdieh

Coming May 31, 2011

Cris Pereira hates starring in a cautionary tale. Alas, her recent heartbreak relegates her to this unbecoming fate. The only good thing about being dumped a foot from the altar is the newest layer to her punchy sarcasm. All she wants is a do-over, but this is not your average fairy tale, and wishes don't come true in the real world. One Sunday afternoon, she meets a movie star. Tom Abramson is intelligent, charming, and impetuous. In other words, he plays the role a bit too well. She isn’t falling for it. She knows better.

All British men are not descendants of Fitzwilliam Darcy, and movie stars are genetic mutations gone awry: X-Men with statistical disadvantages and emotional handicaps. Keep your knight in shining armor. A modern girl can rescue herself, thank you very much. After all, dreams are for the foolhardy, nightmares are just a part of life, and . . . this is not your average fairy tale.

Summary:  After accidentally blowing up both a client facility and a cushy city contract in the same day, pyromancer and mercenary captain Andrea Walker is scrambling to save her Zero Dogs. A team including (but not limited to) a sexually repressed succubus, a werewolf with a thing for health food, a sarcastic tank driver/aspiring romance novelist, a three hundred-pound calico cat, and a massive demon who really loves to blow stuff up.

With the bankruptcy vultures circling, Homeland Security throws her a high-paying, short-term contract even the Zero Dogs can’t screw up: destroy a capitalist necromancer bent on dominating the gelatin industry with an all-zombie workforce. The catch? She has to take on Special Forces Captain Jake Sanders, a man who threatens both the existence of the team and Andrea’s deliberate avoidance of romantic entanglements.

As Andrea strains to hold her dysfunctional team together long enough to derail the corporate zombie apocalypse, the prospect of getting her heart run over by a tank tread is the least of her worries. The government never does anything without an ulterior motive. Jake could be the key to success…or just another bad day at the office for the Zeroes.

Product Warnings:
Contains explicit language, intense action and violence, rampaging zombie hordes, a heroine with an attitude and flamethrower, Special Forces commandos, ninjas, apocalyptic necromancer capitalist machinations, absurd parody and mayhem, self-deluded humor, irreverence, geek humor, mutant cats, low-brow comedy, and banana-kiwi-flavored gelatin.

Thoughts: An assault team for hire. They deal with the more stickier paranormal threats. When SWAT can't get it don't The Zero Dogs are brought in.

This story starts off with a fast narrative and shoots straight into the action. Melton has a strong writing voice that is hard not to love. I think this story holds a little something for everyone. If you have a favorite paranormal creature, you'll probably find it somewhere in the pages of this book.  I loved the heroine Captain Andrea Walker, she is a kick-ass girl.  The attraction with Captain Jake Sanders is absolutely delicious.  In my opinion he is definitely what she needs. The Zero Dog War is a fast ride with some lovable characters and laugh out loud moments.  Zombie fans will enjoy this one.

[Review] - Neon Angel

Title: Neon Angel: A Memoir of A Runaway
Author: Cherie Currie with Tony O'Neill
Genre: Memoir
Release Date: March 29, 2011

Summary:  At the tender age of fifteen, groundbreaking lead singer Cherie Currie joined a group of talented girls—Joan Jett and Lita Ford on guitar, Jackie Fox on bass, and Sandy West on drums—who could rock like no one else.

Arriving on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975, The Runaways catapulted from playing small clubs to selling out major stadiums—headlining shows with opening acts like the Ramones, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, and Blondie while riding a wave of hit songs and platinum albums, and touring the world.

A shocking, funny, and touching re-creation of a bygone era of rock and roll that chronicles the Runaways' rise to fame and ultimate demise, Neon Angel is also an intensely personal account of Currie's struggles with drugs, sexual abuse, and violence in a decadent, high-pressure music scene—a world of uncontrolled excess where she and her unsupervised band mates had to grow up fast and experience things that no teenage girls should.

Thoughts: Several months ago I sat down to watch The Runaways (the movie) staring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.  I ended up really enjoying it.  Going in of course I knew about Joan Jett (I love her stuff) and I knew the song Cherry Bomb, but I didn't know much about the band itself or their history.

I was intrigued enough to picked up Cherie Currie's Neon Angel, the book the movie was based on.  It's rare for me to read a memoir but I definitely wanted to learn more. I was absolutely enthralled with this book. Cherie's story is exciting, horrifying, inspirational and above all honest.  It was shocking to see how much this girl/woman went through, especially at such a young age. Really it's a miracle she's alive today. Although it wasn't easy and took a few tries, she was able to drag herself out of the black hole she was in and land in a better place.

Interview & Giveaway with Anita Clenney

Hi Anita, Welcome to Anna's Book Blog! I'm glad to have you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
AC: I live in Virginia, not far from DC. I’ve always loved reading, even as a kid. I’m a bit obsessive about things I love. I’m crazy over diamonds, and I just have this fetish for mirrors. I don’t look into them but at them. They’re my artwork. And I love trees. A tree can just put anyone in a better mood.

Awaken the Highland Warrior is your newest release, can you tells us a little about it and the series?
AC: This story was so much fun. It started with a dream. A very scary dream, but the story, while loaded with demons and warriors, castles and swords, isn’t really dark. There’s romance, adventure, suspense, and humor. The attraction between Faelan and Bree is instantaneous, and for a good reason, but so is the frustration, because they’re from vastly different cultures. Faelan can’t fathom a female being so bold and rash. The woman attracts danger like a bloody magnet. And she won’t let him protect her; he, a renowned warrior since before she was born. If he could drive that bloody thing she called a car, he’d toss her over his shoulder and get her away from her house before the demon who locked him up comes looking for him.

Bree feels something for Faelan that goes way beyond attraction, frighteningly so, but on the other hand she’s ready to stick him back in the time vault if he doesn’t stop with this over protective nonsense. It’s not the 19th century, for God’s sake, and he’s treating her like a child. Women are tough and independent. But after she finds out what has this big, bad warrior so worried, she’s glad to have all that muscle close by. And she’d give her pinkie toe to get her hands on that talisman hanging around his neck.

What is your writing day like?
AC: I don’t have a particular schedule, although I wish I did. Sometimes day turns into night and night into day. For instance, last week! I was still exhausted from a weekend signing with Nora Roberts, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kristan Higgins, and a bunch of other authors (check out my blog post all about it http://casablancaauthors.blogspot.com/2011/05/fairytale-booksigning-with-nora-roberts.html), so I was moving slow. I had so much work waiting for me. I tried to catch up, but then I had a softball game for my daughter, which meant I was up until four am finishing my work. Actually, I didn’t finish. I crawled into bed IN MY JEANS, and started again the next morning. After the kids went to school, I had to take a nap. My ideal schedule is get in bed early, get up and start writing, get the kids off to school, write until noon, handle promotion until the kids come home. But it never works like that.

When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
AC: I’m a huge Diana Gabaldon and Kristan Higgins fan. I love romance, humor, and mysteries, and if the story has a little eerie paranormal stuff happening, even better.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
AC: About five and a half years ago after a long frenzy of reading I decided that I wanted to write my own book. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I loved writing so much it was too late for me to back out. I worked hard, learned, make mistakes, and learned some more, and here I am.

What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
AC: Basically, just my computer, my keyboard, and my fingers. It doesn’t hurt to have a Diet Coke or Pepsi nearby. And I always have a notebook to jot down quick thoughts I don’t want to lose. I keep a digital voice recorder at hand, but I don’t use it as often.

What type of research did you do for the book/series?
AC: Since the story is set in modern times, it didn’t require as much research as if it had been historical, but I had to make sure that Faelan’s “past” was accurate. I ran into one issue with the word virus. Originally, I had Faelan use the word but actually viruses weren’t discovered until after Faelan’s time. According to my world, the demons created AND NAMED viruses, so it was okay, but the copy writer, my editor, and I decided it would be simpler if Faelan called it a disease instead of virus. That way I didn’t have to add a note to the reader explaining my logic.

If you could give your lead characters one piece of advice, what would it be?
AC: Faelan needs to let go of some of the responsibility he’s been shouldering since he was a child. He had something very tragic happen early in his life. Bree needs to accept herself for who she is. She’s extremely bright, but quirky, and as Faelan notes, her feet have a mind of their own and they’re good at finding holes. She needs to realize that some of the things that made her feel different are there for a reason. An earth-stopping reason.

Since becoming published, what has been your favorite part of the process?
AC: As mentioned before, I had the opportunity to do a book signing with Nora Roberts, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kristan Higgins and several other wonderful authors at Turn the Page Bookstore which belongs to Nora Roberts’ husband. It was part of the Washington Romance Writers Spring Retreat. I didn’t expect to sell many copies, not with those fabulous writers there, but how could I not go? Not only was it a success, but I sold out. That was a glorious moment.

If you can, tell us what is up next for you?
AC: I’ve finished Embrace the Highland Warrior, which comes out in November. Now I’m working on the third book in the series, Unleash the Highland Warrior. Here are blurbs for both:

Embrace the Highland Warrior
When the powerful demon that left Shay for dead discovers her empty grave, he comes seeking retribution, believing she possesses an ancient book he has sought for centuries. Knowing she can’t fight the demon alone, Shay returns to her clan and the Scottish Warrior who betrayed her…the only man she’s ever loved, where she discovers that betrayal isn’t always what it seems. Sometimes it’s far worse.

Unleash the Highland Warrior
A talisman belonging to Tavis Connor’s brother is the only weapon powerful enough to kill the demon hell-bent on stealing the clan’s Book of Battles so he can destroy the world. But the talisman has been locked in a time vault with Tavis’s brother and won’t open for 150 years. In desperation, the Scottish warrior breaks the clan’s sacred rules and uses another time vault to travel forward so he can protect the book and rescue his brother, or if he’s dead, finish his quest. But when Tavis finally wakes in modern-day New York, he discovers he’s the one in need of help. Anna MacKinley has been searching for her clan’s Book of Battles which has been missing for 150 years, but instead she finds a warrior with no memories who claims he’s come to save the world.

AWAKEN THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR
BY ANITA CLENNEY
A Man From Another Time…
Faelan is from an ancient clan of Scottish Highland warrior, charged with shielding humanity from demonic forces. Betrayed and locked in a time vault, he has been sleeping for nearly two centuries when spunky historian Bree Kirkland inadvertently wakes him. She’s more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him, and if he’s not careful, she’ll uncover the secrets his clan has bled and died to protect…

Could Be the Treasure She’s Been Seeking All her Life…
When Bree inherits an old treasure map, she discovers a warrior buried in her backyard. But the warrior isn’t dead. Bree shocks Faelan with her modern dress and her boldness, and he infuriates Bree every time he tries to protect her.

With demons suddenly on the move, Bree discovers that Faelan’s duty as protector is in his blood, and that her part in this fight was destined before she was born. But nothing is ever what it seems…

Interview with Kim Culbertson

Hi Kim, Welcome back to Anna's Book Blog! It's great having you here. To start off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
Thanks for having me back, Anna.  As you know, my daughter’s name is Ana (just with one ‘n’ – so I love your name!)  A little about me:  I’ve been a high school teacher for 14 years and I love it.  I currently teach high school English and Creative Writing at a very cool Charter school in Northern California.  I am married and I have a six year old daughter.  I obviously love to write and read but I also love to drink coffee, go to Jazzercise, and hang out with my friends and family.  Also, a little fun fact is that I just learned to downhill ski – I’m terrible but hoping to get better!

Instructions for a Broken Heart is your latest release, can you tell us a little about it?

Instructions for a Broken Heart follows Jessa as she heads to Italy with her drama academy three days after finding her boyfriend in the costume barn with another girl – not trying on costumes (yikes).  And now she has to navigate the trip in the wake of this huge betrayal.  And he’s on the trip with his new girl (double yikes).  Her friend sends a care package of “instructions” to help Jessa “get over” her ex-boyfriend but it also takes Italy and some new friends to light her way.

How did you come up with the idea for Instructions for a Broken Heart? Were there any particular inspirations?
When I was a young teacher, I took 16 students to Italy with another teacher and it was just such an amazing trip.  I had always tucked away that experience knowing I would love to use it someday as a back-drop for a novel.  The “instructions” part of the novel came to me when I overheard a conversation between two of my students a few years ago.  One of them had just had a horrible break up and the other girl was trying to help.  She kept giving her ideas like “eat ice cream” and “leave a horrible note on his locker.”  I thought it would be an interesting premise if a friend created a whole care package of these sorts of ideas and then really play out whether that idea could even work or not to give someone else “break up instructions.”

Why did you chose Italy as your setting?
It’s such a beautiful country with its own color palette.  I love Italy and had been really wishing I could go back there.  I think writing the book kind of let me revisit my trip.  Also, I’m getting really into writing about travel – I just love being outside my normal pattern so much and I think travel really puts a person in a new head space.

Since becoming published, what has been your most memorable moment?
Honestly, it was that realization that people I didn’t even know were reading my book Songs for a Teenage Nomad and responding to it.  It wasn’t my mom or my husband or my writing group or best friend. Total strangers.  Lovely strangers who decided, for some amazing reason, to pick up my book.  I got a letter from a girl back East telling me that she really loved Songs because Calle made her realize she could be a stronger person.  Wow.  I was so floored.  One of the reasons I wanted to be a high school teacher was to connect with teens and try to be a meaningful person in their lives because I had so many great teachers in my life as a girl.  The thought that my writing could be an extension of that…well, I just feel really grateful and happy.

Are there any real life people that have inspired the characters in your series?
My former students write me all the time and ask, “Am I Eli?  Am I Calle?”  And while no one character is ever based on any one real person, they are all mixes of the students I’ve had, the people I’ve known.  For example, in Instructions for a Broken Heart, the character of Cruella isn’t based on any one awful person, but a whole bunch of unhappy people I’ve run into over the years who just can’t seem to be happy and so they try to make other people unhappy too.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Deb Caletti, Alyson Noel, Jennifer Echols, John Green, Eireann Corrigan for teens but also Richard Russo, Jennifer Egan, Nick Hornby, and Jonathan Tropper.

What is your favorite thing about writing YA books?
The hopefulness, the energy of these characters.  It’s the same reason I love teaching high school.  Despite their often bleak reputation, teenagers are this really funny, hopeful, energetic group of people and being around them makes me a constant dreamer.  They are still so excited about things, about the future, about being on their own.  Everything is happening to them so quickly but it feels like it takes forever.  They are just riddled with contradictions – I want to be independent, but I’m afraid.  I love you, but you make me mad.  And contradictions, tension, make for good fiction.  It’s all built in to being a teenager.  Never a dull moment.

If you could give your lead characters one piece of advice, what would it be?
Breathe, then open your eyes:  you’re the only one who sees the world this way and that is a beautiful, special thing.

If you can, tell us what is up next for you?

I just started working on a new book and I’m so excited about it.  I can’t really talk about it yet because it’s still in that formative phase but it will be a love story.  I just can’t seem to stop writing love stories.
