[ARC Review] - Awaken The Highland Warrior

Title: Awaken the Highland Warrior
Author: Anita Clenney
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Time Travel
Release Date: May 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary:  A MAN FROM ANOTHER TIME, AND ANOTHER WORLD

Faelan is from an ancient clan of Scottish Highland warriors, charged with shielding humanity from demonic forces. He has been sleeping for centuries when Bree Kirkland inadvertently wakes him, and he's hungry in more ways than one...

COULD BE THE TREASURE SHE'S BEEN SEEKING ALL HER LIFE

Modern Bree shocks Faelan in every way imaginable--her dress, her speech, her spunkiness. And he infuriates Bree every time he tries to protect her--can't  he see she can take care of herself?

With horrific demon enemies suddenly on the movie, Bree discovers that Faelan's duty as a protector is in his blood, and she's the only one who can feed him, body and soul...

Thoughts: While treasure hunting Bree Kirkland discovers her destiny in the form of a Highland warrior.

I enjoyed this story just for the fact a Highlander was involved. Made even more interesting by throwing demons into the mix. It was sweet watching the relationship between Faelan and Bree grow. Debut author Clenney has written a great beginning to a new series. Awaken the Highland Warrior is fun, sexy and action packed.  If you are a fan of other Highlander stories, you won't want to miss this one.

[ARC Review] - Hounded by Kevin Hearne

Title: Hounded
Author: Kevin Hearne
Series: The Iron Druid Chronicles
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: May 3, 2011

I received this book for review from Library Thing Early Reviewers & Del Rey Books.

Summary:  Atticus O’Sullivan has been running for two thousand years and he’s a bit tired of it. After he stole a magical sword from the Tuatha Dé Danann (those who became the Sidhe or the Fae) in a first century battle, some of them were furious and gave chase, and some were secretly amused that a Druid had the cheek to defy them. As the centuries passed and Atticus remained an annoyingly long-lived fugitive, those who were furious only grew more so, while others began to aid him in secret.

Now he’s living in Tempe, Arizona, the very last of the Druids, far from where the Fae can easily find him. It’s a place where many paranormals have decided to hide from the troubles of the Old World—from an Icelandic vampire holding a grudge against Thor to a coven of Polish witches who ran from the German Blitzkrieg.

Unfortunately, the very angry Celtic god who wants that sword has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power, plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good, old-fashioned luck of the Irish to kick some arse and deliver himself from evil.

Thoughts: Atticus is many things, but the most important is that he is a Druid. The last of his kind. He is many, many centuries old - even though he only looks to be in his 20's.  Atticus is powerful and wields a sword.  A magical sword, that a Celtic god wants bad and said god will do anything to get it.

Excellent read! Hounded is a real page turner. Every time I was gonna take a break I had to read the next chapter to see what was going to happen. A fast and entertaining tale. Atticus is a great character to spend time with. Witty, sharp as a tack. Really a bit of a bad ass, I think he could give Mr. Harry Dresden a run for his money. I loved his sense of humor (even his dog is funny) and that the book is steeped in Celtic mythology.  Looking forward to reading the next installments. Fans of this genre will eat this one up.

[ARC Review] - The Legend of Michael

Title: The Legend of Michael
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Series: Zodius
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: May 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: HE IS A LETHAL WEAPON

One of an army of human soldiers injected with alien DNA, Michael is a legend within this new race, split between good and evil. Untamable, he has walked on the dark side and returned to the light. Feared and misunderstood, he leaves everything behind, including the one women destined to be his mate.

HE IS HER ENEMY...AND HER DESTINY...

Fate leads Michael back to Cassandra Powell, for she holds the key to defending his comrades. With their loyalties divided between duty and the people they love, only together can Cassandra and Michael overcome insurmountable odds to save humanity from the wrath of a madman.

But no ordinary women can control a creature such as Michael, and only one thing is clear--the world will never be the same.

Thoughts: Michael is a human soldier that has been injected and changed with alien DNA by the government. Among his fellow soldiers he is legend and one not to cross. When Cassandra & Michael meet for the first time, they literally crash into each other. From that first gaze and touch he rocks her world.  Instantly Michael knows that  Cassandra is his mate and will do anything to protect her... even if that means leaving her behind.

This book holds a story of soldiers drastically changed by alien DNA, but also a story of life mates. Something that always draws me in.  For me The Legend of Michael was a surprise. I wasn't sure I was gonna like it. I don't read many books with military type settings. But it was a much more than a military story. It was one hot story, and an exciting new world. Original, full of action with fun steamy scenes. Michael's commanding presence sizzles and jumps off the page.

[Review] - Last Sacrifice

Title: Last Sacrifice
Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Vampire Academy
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: December 7, 2010

Summary:  Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules.
She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir Princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardian to come.

Now the law has finally caught up with Rose- for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back… and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your life is about saving others, who will save you?

Thoughts: Rose Hathaway's friends break her out of jail. While her friends try to clear her name as Queen Tatiana's killer,  Rose along with Dimitri and Sydney are on a mission too. To find the last Dragomir. The one person who could help Lissa secure the throne.

Last Sacrifice is a great ending to this part of the series. I loved it, definitely one of my favorite books in the series. An emotionally driven and epic tale. Fast paced with lots of action. Shocking revelations are revealed and for the most part story lines are concluded. I'm eager to find out what the spin off series will be like. Fans of the series won't be disappointed. If you haven't given Vampire Academy a try I recommend that you do.

[ARC Review] - Defiant

Title: Defiant
Author: Kris Kennedy
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: April 26, 2011

I received this book for review from Simon & Schuster.

Summary:  England, 1215, the eve of Magna Carta

Jamie Lost is the king’s most renowned commander, an audacious knight ordered to kidnap an exiled priest before rebel forces close in. The mission is simple--until he comes up against a mysterious woman on a mission, a thief who will first steal his quarry and then his heart.

Eva is also seeking Father Peter, but she intends to protect him from a secret that endangers his life, even if it costs her own.  She is well aware danger lies everywhere, especially in the knight showing too much interest in her activities.  But deep inside, Eva knows the danger lies not in Jamie, but in her, in the desire he awakens in her body and her heart.

When a mysterious band of armed mercenaries upends both their plans and abducts the priest, Jamie and Eva must form an uneasy alliance, and as civil war unfolds around them, they embark on an epic journey that betrays the truth about their identities, their unexpected loyalties, and the dangerous attraction that could seal their fates forever.

Thoughts: The King sends knight, Jamie Lost on a mission to kidnap a priest before their enemies do.  But there is snag. Jamie is knocked off his feet in more ways that one by Eva who just so happens to get to the priest first.

The middle ages isn't my favorite setting to read, but I thought I'd give this one a try. In Defiant, Kris Kennedy takes you on a an exciting adventure.  Sexy, charming and lets face it the cover is some yummy eye candy.  Jamie and Eva's journey makes for a fun read. It could be just be me but this book has a great opening line - that I think will shock readers and in the next second make them giggle. Historical fans will enjoy this one.

[Promo] - Enclave

Out Today!

Enclave
By Ann Aguirre

New York City has been decimated by war and plague, and most of civilization has migrated to underground enclaves, where life expectancy is no more than the early 20's. When Deuce turns 15, she takes on her role as a Huntress, and is paired with Fade, a teenage Hunter who lived Topside as a young boy. When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been decimated by the tunnel monsters—or Freaks—who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to warnings.

And when Deuce and Fade are exiled from the enclave, the girl born in darkness must survive in daylight, in the ruins of a city whose population has dwindled to a few dangerous gangs. As the two are guided by Fade’s long-ago memories, they face dangers, and feelings, unlike any they’ve ever known.

[Review] - Lover Unleashed

Title: Lover Unleashed
Author: J.R. Ward
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: March 29, 2011

Summary:  Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Thoughts: Originally I wasn't too excited that the next book would be about Payne and Manny.  But they both grew on me and I ended up really liking them.   I love that we got to see more about Vishous and Jane. They go through some serious stuff in this one. It's as much their book as it is Payne and Manny's.  I know alot of fans love Blay and Qhuinn and I do too. But for this book I could of done without their story line.  Qhuinn does have revelation in this book that I'm curious to see how it will play out.  Xcor and his group were interesting as well, but I doesn't seem that they have any good intentions.

Lover Unleashed wasn't my favorite in the series, but I still loved the story.  Definitely a good addition to the series.

Giveaway: Water For Elephants

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

[Review] - Percival's Angel

Title: Percival's Angel
Author: Anne Eliot Crompton
Series: Arthurian
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: March 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary:  Lili's eyes can see in the dark like an owl. She can sense spirit auras of all creatures and perform magic more powerful than most. But because Lili is Fey, she does not possess the world's greatest power--Love.

Lili wants to understand Love more than anything, and her human friend Percy is just the right person to help. Together they begin a treacherous journey--for nothing is more dangerous than the power of the human heart.

Thoughts: Lili is fey, once part of the Children Guard. She yearns to learn about the human heart and this power called "Love", that Merlin speaks of. Her friend Percy is a human that was raised in the Fey Forest. Never knowing of King Arthur or his Knights.  They embark on a journey together to the human world to seek out what they most desire.

Percival's Angel is the third book in Crompton's Arthurian series and my first time delving into the series. A mystical and magical tale. The writing is like nothing I've read before.  It's written in such a way that is almost poetic, which made for a delightful story. I was most intrigued and in the end enjoyed reading it. I have always loved the King Arthur legends, especially from the female point of view.  I think fans of Fantasy and Arthurian Legends will like this one too.

Score: 3 Stars
