Title: Lothaire
Author: Kresley Cole
ISBN: 9781439136829
Price: $25.00/$28.99 CAN
Format: Hardcover
On Sale: 1/10/12

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole continues her electrifying Immortals After Dark series with this thrilling tale, revealing secrets of the Lore, fierce realm of the immortals. . . .

ALL FEAR THE ENEMY OF OLD
Driven by his insatiable need for revenge, Lothaire, the Lore’s most ruthless vampire, plots to seize the Horde’s crown. But bloodlust and torture have left him on the brink of madness—until he finds Elizabeth Peirce, the key to his victory. He captures the unique young mortal, intending to offer up her very soul in exchange for power, yet Elizabeth soothes his tormented mind and awakens within him emotions Lothaire believed he could no longer experience.

A DEADLY FORCE DWELLS WITHIN HER
Growing up in desperate poverty, Ellie Peirce yearned for a better life, never imagining she’d be convicted of murder—or that an evil immortal would abduct her from death row. But Lothaire is no savior, as he himself plans to sacrifice Ellie in one month’s time. And yet the vampire seems to ache for her touch, showering her with wealth and sexual pleasure. In a bid to save her soul, Ellie surrenders her body to the wicked vampire, while vowing to protect her heart.

CENTURIES OF COLD INDIFFERENCE SHATTERED

Elizabeth tempts Lothaire beyond reason, as only his fated mate could. As the month draws to a close, he must choose between a millennia-old blood vendetta and his irresistible prisoner. Will Lothaire succumb to the miseries of his past . . . or risk everything for a future with her?

Winners - The Temple

Heather has decided to giveaway two ebook copies of The Temple. Here are the winners and their winning Halloween Memory:

LoriStrongin
Lori's Halloween Memory: My story's not nearly as awesome as yours, but one year, I went dressed as a a 1920 flapper, platinum blonde wig and all. Unfortunately, everyone thought I'd dressed up as a stripper.

Arianne Cruz
Arianne's Halloween Memory: My Halloween is not funny but I'll tell u anyway. I dressed up as "Modern Mother Earth" (i made it up) and met my friends. We didn't go trick or treating but we did walk miles to get some food and then realize the restaurant was already closed. Did I mention I was in 3" boots? We tried to order on a KFC drive thru and the associate asked where was our car and we said we don't have any. Long story short, no food for us. On our way back home, something developed and that was the start of my ex courting me. The end.

Congrats!! Heather will be contacting both of you very soon.

[ARC Review] - Too Wicked To Wed

Title: Too Wicked To Wed
Author: Cara Elliott
Series: Lords of Midnight
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: October 25, 2011

I received this book for review from Grand Central Publishing.

Summary:  Outspoken and independent, Lady Alexa Hendrie is happiest in the quiet of the country, where she is free to run her family’s estate as she chooses. But when her brother’s recklessness forces her to London, a chance encounter with the ton’s most wicked rake—and his searing kiss—awaken a longing for adventure.

A man of many secrets, Connor Linsley, the Earl of Killingworth, uses his rakehell reputation to hide the fact that poverty has forced him to work for a living. As the owner of a gambling den and brothel, Connor has no time for glittering ballrooms or innocent young ladies. But after a daring masquerade by Alexa leads to her winning half of his business, he is forced to take a risky gamble . . .

Will the cards fall in their favor?
Alexa and Connor begin to play a dangerous game of intrigue, deception, and desire. Consumed by a passion beyond their wildest imaginings, they must risk all they hold dear for a chance at love. But can they escape the danger that pursues them? Or will their own fiery attraction be their ultimate undoing?

Thoughts: Rake Connor Linsley is the last person Lady Alexa Hendrie should be alone with. But she keeps finding herself in that exact situation - the temptation is just too much to resist.  One burning kiss and they are lost for each other, although it takes them a while to admit it.  A yummy and all around fun read! Cara Elliott is a new author to me - but I was pleasantly surprise with this story. Too Wicked To Wed is a page turner. Delicious and sexy. Connor Linsley is a bad boy - a saucy lead, that I loved.  He was one of the reasons I was eager to read this title. I wasn't disappointed and would recommend this one to historical fans.

[ARC Review] - Darker Still

Title: Darker Still
Author: Leanna Renee Hieber
Series: Magic Most Foul
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: November 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: “I was obsessed.

It was as if he called to me, demanding I reach out and touch the brushstrokes of color swirled onto the canvas. It was the most exquisite portrait I’d ever seen. Everything about Lord Denbury was unbelievable-- utterly breathtaking and eerily lifelike.

There was a reason for that. Because despite what everyone said, Denbury never had committed suicide. He was alive. Trapped within his golden frame.

I’ve crossed over into his world within the painting and I’ve seen what dreams haunt him. They haunt me too. He and I are inextricably linked- bound together to watch the darkness seeping through the gas-lit cobblestone streets of Manhattan. And unless I can free him soon, things will only get darker still..."

Thoughts: Natalie Stewart has been mute since the day her mother died. The year is 1880 and Natalie has just been discharged from the asylum. She feels like she's leaving one prison - just to enter another. The she learns about the painting of Lord Denbury and is taken on an unexpected journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed Natalie's story.  The story is set out in journal entries, news clippings and letters, which was compelling. It definitely gives more to the story.  This is the first time I've read with a mostly mute character. I found Natalie to be very interesting. A little lost, but open for anything.  Darker Still is mysterious and richly dark. A great mystery and romance. Everything I've come to love in Ms. Hieber's gothic tales.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with SM Reine

Many centuries ago, Earth was a battleground. Heaven and Hell poured their fury across the world. Demons devoured man. Angels battled evil. Mankind struggled to survive. It was a horrible free-for-all with humans in the middle, and the bodies piled high.

Thousands of voices cried out for a savior. Alexander the Great answered.

He called together a caucus of the most powerful demons and angels, and they came to an agreement: Demons must stay in Hell, and angels must stay in the Heavens. They can live and breed on Earth, but only if they accept the rule of man—and a special class of mortal warriors was established to ensure ethereal and infernal cooperation.

Alexander the Great named his warriors after a brutal sword used by the Greek army: “Kopes.” They’ve saved countless lives in the years since then.

I’d like to say that this is all true. It would be nifty and reassuring to think of a special army designed just to protect us, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, even if Alexander the Great was pretty great, we’ll have to leave “forcing monsters from Hell to bend to his will” off his hefty list of accomplishments.

Getting to write about kopes and aspes is pretty cool, though. Elise Kavanagh and James Faulkner (the heroes of my new book, Death’s Hand) have a lot of work in front of them. Keeping the balance of power in line isn’t easy, and it only gets harder as we grow more distant from the influence of Alexander the Great!

Elise and James are definitely up to the job. Here’s an excerpt from Death’s Hand to show you how these two handle a girl who’s been possessed by a demon:

Elise tackled Lucinde, smashing both of them into the fence. It shuddered with the force of the impact. Her hands slipped on Lucinde, and the girl darted for a pile of landscaping boulders at the opposite corner.

James moved to cut her off. She froze, then tried to dart in the other direction.

Elise was already there, uncoiling the extra rope in her fists. Her chain of charms jingled at her belt, and the crosses seemed to glow.

Blood-caked fingernails flashed at Elise’s face. She threw herself out of the way, grabbing the girl’s wrist. Lucinde snatched the charms at Elise’s belt. The belt loops popped, and she flung them aside. The charms sank into a puddle of mud.

James dove for Lucinde. She darted aside, but he managed to catch her arm. Her flesh was so hot it nearly burned his hand. He jerked her around, and she kicked him—hard—in the shin.
He growled, hefting Lucinde under his arm. She snapped at his arms with her teeth. He clamped a hand over her mouth.

Elise knelt in the mud, searching for her charms.

“I can’t find them!”

“Forget it. Door,” he grunted. Elise threw it open, and he rushed through. Lucinde kicked hard, nearly squirming out from under James’s arms. “Get her feet!”

Elise took her by the ankles, bracing them as James dragged her down the stairs.

Fumbling at the back of her neck, Elise took off her cross necklace and pressed it to Lucinde’s cheek. Her voice hardened, deepening with power as she summoned up the memory of the oft-recited rituals from ancient books to do her first exorcism in years.

“I exorcise you, impious demon,” she recited, and Lucinde’s face screwed up with pain. “In vain do you boast of this deed. I command you to restore her as proof you no longer have any rule over her soul. I abjure—”

Lucinde swung. “Elise!” James yelled.

Her fist connected. Elise’s back smacked into a wall, and Lucinde lunged.

Elise braced herself and took the impact, translating the momentum into a throw. Lucinde slid, but regained her footing immediately.

Elise scooped her rope from the floor, holding it in the joint of her elbow to keep her hands free. She grabbed the girl by her collar and slammed her into the wall. The drywall cracked.

We’ve come a long way since the days that Alexander the Great reigned, but the fights just keep getting dirtier and dirtier. I mean, taking possession of a little girl? Low blow, Hell. Low blow. It’s the fight of Elise’s life in Death’s Hand, and it’s a heck of a ride (if you’ll pardon the pun).

DEATH'S HAND
By SM Reine

Out Now!

Policing relations between Heaven, Hell, and Earth is messy and violent, but Elise Kavanagh and James Faulkner excelled at it-- until coming across a job so brutal that even they couldn't stand to see one more dead body.

Now they've been pretending to be normal for five years, leaving their horrific history a dark secret. Elise works in an office. James owns a business. None of their friends realize they used to be one of the world's best killing teams.

After years of hiding, something stirs. Bodies are vanishing. Demons scurry in the shadows of the night. A child has been possessed.

Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead...

[Review] - Pariah, Issue #3

Title: Pariah, Issue #3
Writers: Aron Warner, Philip Gelatt
Artists: Brett Weldele
Cover Artists: Brett Weldele
Series: Pariah
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: September 2011

Summary:  Robert Maudsley knows what makes us tick. He knows what people want, need, hate and love. He can use that knowledge to get us to do whatever he wants, no matter how dangerous, immoral or repugnant that might be. Maudsley has no moral compass. He has no compassion. But he's very curious about how far he can push people and what he can get away with. Maudsley wants to rule the world... to control us all. Maudsley is 15 years old.

Thoughts: This issue revolves around Robert Maudsley. He is a very, very smart 15 year old. He knows what he is doing but doesn't care. Conniving and very dangerous. This was definitely an interesting part of the story.

The story begins in 2023, two years before The Marinus Incident and we are introduced to Robert Maudsley. This guy and what he can do is kinda scary, but I very much enjoyed his story. I loved the coloring in this one, it really sets the tone. So far I'm loving this comic. Each issue brings a new story of a different teenager. Looking forward to reading more.

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Heather Marie Adkins

A Close Encounter:
My Funniest Halloween Memory

Heather Marie Adkins

I grew up down the street from an empty house that the neighborhood kids swore was haunted.
You know the house.  Permanently dark with broken windows covered by cheap plywood or ragged curtains.  Listing porch posts on a cracked concrete stoop.  Knee-high grass in the yard and a giant oak tree that never seems to grow leaves.
I ran with three kids back then—Pamela, Kristina, and Matthew.  We used to ride our bikes down the road and try to see who could go the fastest.  Usually it turned into “who could have the bloodiest injury”.
Despite our thrill-seeking in speed racing, we gave The House a wide-berth.
It wasn’t that we were chicken… Okay, yes it was because we were chicken.  We were just shy of ten years old.  At that age, you think you own the world, but in reality, the world just scares you.
It started with a dare.  Doesn’t it always?
There were a couple days still until Halloween.  We were on our bikes in the middle of the street just a couple yards away from The House.  Kristina—who wasn’t usually an arrogant twit—was in a bratty mood.  When I mentioned the 100% I got on my spelling test at school that day, she scoffed at me.
    “I always get hundreds.”
Now, I’m very competitive about my grades.  School has always been a source of pride for me.  I might have snarled something not quite so nice at her.  You know how kids are.
Pamela was the peacemaker.  Her peace offering?  “Let’s break into The House.”
    Oh dear.
The details were worked out.  Why do it now when Halloween was only two days away?  Some of the high school kids usually busted out the basement windows on The House every October.  Easy-peasy for some pipsqueak grade-schoolers to get in.
I remember it was a suitably chilly Halloween.  17 years ago, the month of October actually felt like autumn in the Ohio Valley.  Nowadays, it feels more like summer.  I met them in the street in front of The House; probably the first time we were ever bike-less together.  As far as my dad knew, I was at Kristina’s house.
Night had already fallen, as it does so near the time change, and we were full of sugar—sugar that probably gave us a lot more bravery than we normally would have had.
As we expected, one of the windows had been broken; it was even already open.  It was one of the kinds that flipped into the room, like an old schoolhouse window.  The four of us argued for a good ten minutes about who was going in first.
    It wasn’t me :)
Matthew, being the only boy and thus the “bravest”, was forced in first.
“What do you see?” Pamela called, shoving her head through the window.  Kristina and I were halfway down the driveway (and I know I felt like we weren’t far enough away).
His answer was unintelligible from my standpoint, but Pamela gestured for us to come over.
“It’s empty,” she told us.  “Come on.”
I admired her bravery then; I don’t think it took much to impress me as a kid.  Now, I’m pretty sure we were just stupid.
It was ridiculously dark inside The House.  Kristina, Pamela, and Matthew had remembered to bring flashlights—I, however, had not.  (I’ve yet to lose that airheaded-ness.)
It was a very innocuous basement.  There wasn’t any furniture.  There weren’t even any rooms.  It was a gigantic concrete box.  Light seeped through the dirty windows, illuminating the room’s only occupant—the water heater.  It did look suspiciously like a person hulking in the corner and waiting to gnaw on my shoulder, but I kept that thought to myself.
Matthew had already walked upstairs.  I remember thinking how creepy his footsteps sounded above us because they echoed in the empty basement.  If we hadn’t known it was him, we’d probably have stepped on each other’s heads in our haste to exit back through the window.
We three girls huddled together and ascended to the first floor, Pamela and Kristina’s flashlights playing over the walls around us.  It was freaking cold.  There was little temperature difference between the basement and the upstairs.  Probably because there were a couple broken windows letting in that lovely fall air.  Matthew was waiting for us at the top of the stairs.  He shined his light in our eyes.  Boys.
The rest of The House was nearly as empty as the basement.  A single couch, covered in a thin layer of dirt and sagging in the middle, sat in the living room area.  There was a sooty fireplace in one wall but only an outline where the mantle should have been.  Being older and wiser now, it occurs to me the place had probably been foreclosed on—weird stuff gets taken by the angry owners.
We wandered down the hallway and into the darker recesses of the house.  The windows on the bedrooms had been boarded—there was no ambient light, only the small beams of the flashlights to illuminate our path.
One bedroom had nothing but a metal bed frame, minus the mattress.  Another had a single wooden chest—the kind my grandparents had that held all the extra household blankets (and mothballs).
The third was empty, and it was the only room to still have a door on the closet.  You ask why this is important, huh?
Because no sooner than we had stepped into that room, the flimsy wooden door creaked open on its own.
And now you’re wondering how this creepy story has anything to do with my funniest memory.  Surely, this must be my scariest memory.  Flimsy closet doors in empty, abandoned, possibly haunted houses should NOT open on their own.
We screamed, turning to run as if the devil were lighting hell fires beneath our feet.  I had no flashlight.  I also had no coordination.  In the melee of scrambling down the hall, I tripped over a piece of warped carpet and went down hard.
I was on my stomach and facing down the hall, towards the living room where my friends had disappeared.  I swear, I thought I was about to die.  I was terrified that a ghost was coming from that closet and it was about to swoop down on me and whisk me away.
As I was pushing myself to my knees, something heavy landed on my legs.  I screamed again, and kicked.
My foot connected with something solid and a reowr ripped through the air.
    It was a cat.
I don’t know how he got into the house, nor why.  He was rather large, fluffy, and black as midnight.  And he was angry that I’d kicked him across the floor.  If looks could kill, his yellow eyes would have made me as stone-cold dead as The House.
“It was a cat!” I yelled to the others before collapsing in laughter.  At myself.
Of course it wasn’t a ghost.  It’s easy to let the imagination take over when you have expectations of a place.  I think a lot of our fears have more power than they should simply because the mind is powerful enough alone—couple it with irrationality, and we humans sure can be stooopid.
It’s not a knee-buckling hilarious story, maybe—unless you’re me.  Then you realize you were terrified and nearly peed your pants over a cute, fluffy cat.  He managed to get over his anger and rub against me for a good five minutes.  Ah, the irony.
It was the first (and last) time I broke into an abandoned house.
    I blame the cat.

The Temple

Vale Avari has a mysterious past and a laundry list of super-powers, but that's nothing compared to what she finds upon moving from small town U.S.A to even smaller-town England.
A chance dart throw lands her in Quicksilver, an off-the-map place with a big problem - people are dying, and word is, it's supernatural.

At her new place of employment, a temple dedicated to the ancient Mother Goddess, Vale learns something even more shocking - women guards are disappearing at an alarmingly patterned rate; women who possess special gifts like her own.
Supernatural powers aside, Vale isn't ready to believe in the Wild Hunt as the culprit, and she's determined to prove the deaths are acts of human violence.

Plagued by a brute with a history of domestic violence and lusting after a dark-eyed man with a secret, Vale has a limited amount of time to discover the killer before he strikes again. In the process, she'll learn things aren't always what they seem and the supernatural might not be so extraordinary after all.

The Hunt could ride for her.

[Series Spotlight] : New Orleans Vampires

This month I've picked New Orleans Vampires by Kathy Love. I've had this series on my TBR list for ages. The first book Any Way You Want It is hard to get your hands on unless you want it for Kindle or Nook. But I finally found a print copy through Alibris. Yay! I recently finished reading it and I loved it. Which I was sure I was gonna. It has two of my favorite things vampires and New Orleans. Besides the story, the covers are pretty hot too. I look forward to the other books in the series. New Orleans Vampires, so far consists of 5 books and is published by Brava/Kensington Publishing. If you can get your hands on them I definitely recommend you check it out.

Any Way You Want It
Is That A Treble Clef In Your Pocket-- Or Are You Just Glad To See Me?

Maggie Gallagher spends her nights with lots of men. Of course, they're all dead composers, but why nitpick? Her love life is just like the musical compositions she researches--undiscovered. It's time for Maggie to let loose and go wild. In a dive bar on Bourbon Street, Maggie makes a real find in the house band's keyboard player. He's hot. Sexy. Flirtatious. Soulful. And she could swear he's playing an unknown piece she's been researching, which is impossible, unless he's dead...

Centuries before he was a badass vampire with a rock-star wardrobe and Big Easy charm, Ren was Renauldo D'Antoni, a composer on the verge of great success until he was betrayed. No one could ever know that, but tonight, the shy strawberry blonde with the big eyes and obviously borrowed outfit actually seemed to recognize his long-lost composition. Now, she wants to know about the composition, and Ren wants to know her...intimately. But what starts as attraction--and distraction--just might lead to the biggest discovery of their lives...

I Want You To Want Me
Erika Todd moved to New Orleans because she needed a change - and, well, yes, because that's what her fortune teller said she would do. Not that she'd admit that to many people. But so many of the psychic's predictions - about her work, even finding that stray black cat - have already come true. Now all the lonely sculptor needs is to meet and fall in love with the prophesied dark-eyed prince.

Reclusive musician Vittorio Ridgewood has a new neighbour he's been trying to avoid. Sure, she's gorgeous, but she's coming on strong, and the last thing the 200 year-old vampire needs is to get involved with another mortal. Especially since several of his former human paramours have lately been turning up dead.

Sensing the relentless beauty needs someone to watch over her, Vittorio agrees to sit for a sculpture, and their attraction to one another quickly ignites. But is passion even this hot worth dying for?

Demon Can't Help It
A Demon...Not Just In Bed

Practical Josephine "Jo" Burke has no patience for the paranormal;even if she's been having some strange visions lately. But if she is losing her mind, at least it would explain her new attraction to her co-worker, the least suitable man she could ever fall for...

Maksim Kostova has no idea why he's so drawn to feisty mortal Jo, but he does know how she feels about the supernatural. Forget about her accepting him for what he really is, she'd never even believe him in the first place. Or would she? When Jo confesses to him that she's been seeing visions of a dead girl, it seems anything's possible...

What A Demon Wants
She's No Angel

A bodyguard? Why in the world would a demon need a bodyguard? Yes, it's true Ellina Kostova is only half demon...and an author with a cult following, but that just means strange stuff happens. She isn't in real danger. Heck, she's in more danger from Jude Anthony, the guy her brother has hired to protect her. In big danger, actually. Because she just cannot be attracted to...well, anyone. She's too much of a demon in bed. No, really.

Jude has grown accustomed to being an outcast, adrift in both the mortal and preternatural worlds. Being a paid fighting machine isn't glamorous, but he does it - and many other things - spectacularly well. And man does Ellina Kostova need a lot of protection. But he needs protection, too. She's making him remember what it feels like to be human. And he's already learned no good can come of that. Especially when he's been hired not only to protect her - but also kill her...

Truth or Demon
Hot? Hell, Yeah.

If you ask Killian O'Brien, Hell gets a bad rap. True, he's a demon, so he's bound to be a little biased. But he's got great job security, all the women he can handle, a body to die for --literally -- and free reign to do as he likes. Or he did, until teenager Daisy Reed and her two friends got hold of a book of spells and summoned him to do their bidding.

Their demand; find Daisy's older sister, Poppy, a boyfriend. Can't be that difficult, right? It's not like the woman is unattractive. Truth be told, Poppy is irresistible -- and mind-blowingly sexy. Which is exactly why finishing this simple little assignment so he can be sent back where he came from is turning out to be the hardest thing Killian's ever done...

Giveaway: The Shattered Vine

The Shattered Vine
Vineart War #3

Jerzy, Vineart apprentice and former slave, was sent by his master to investigate strange happenings—and found himself the target of betrayal. Now he must set out on his own journey, to find the source of the foul taint that threatens to destroy everything he holds dear. By Jerzy’s side are Ao, who lives for commerce and the art of the deal; Mahault, stoic and wise, risking death in flight from her homeland; and Kaïnam, once Named-Heir of an island principality, whose father has fallen into a magic-tangled madness that endangers them all.

These four companions will travel far from the earth and the soul of the vine, sailing along coastlines aflame with fear, confronting sea creatures summoned by darkness, and following winds imbued with malice. Their journey will take them to the very limits of the Sin Washer’s reach . . . and into a battle for the soul of the Lands Vin. For two millennia the Sin Washer’s Commandment has kept these lands in order: Those of magic shall hold no power over men and those princes of power shall hold no magic. Now, that law has given way. And a hidden force seeks the havoc of revenge.

[Review] - Pariah, Issue #2

Title: Pariah, Issue #2
Writers: Aron Warner, Philip Gelatt
Artists: Brett Weldele
Cover Artists: Brett Weldele
Series: Pariah
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: August 2011

I received this book for review from Sea Lion Books.

Summary:  Why are the most elite black-ops forces chasing a 16 year old girl across the country? Why can't they find her? And why do they want to kill her? Because they think Lila Ellerman is a terrorist who released a deadly virus into the wild. But really, she's just a girl with a crush on a guy named Brandon.

Yes, she’s figured out the science of controlling anti-matter, but that doesn’t make her a criminal. Will she be able to protect her friends and keep them from being taken prisoner, or worse?

Thoughts: The issue is set in Montana 2025 and we are introduced to Lila Ellerman formally of The Marinus Labs. Like Brent from issue #1 she is a vitros. She is being hunted down because of what she is and her knowledge. But she's done nothing wrong or the criminal they claim she is. First off let me say the cover art for this issue is outstanding, I love it.  Lila is very strong character, I enjoyed reading about her.  Pariah #2 is another action filled story. If you love dystopian or futuristic stories you'll want to check this one out.

[Review] - Pariah, Issue #1

Title: Pariah, Issue #1
Writers: Aron Warner, Philip Gelatt
Artists: Brett Weldele
Cover Artists: Brett Weldele
Series: Pariah
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: June 2011

I received this book for review from Sea Lion Books.

Summary: Brent Marks is not a freak. He's one of the "PARIAH", a group of teens who become extremely intelligent after being cured of a genetic disorder. Although in most ways a normal teen, Brent is considered dangerous and is tracked down by the government who see these kids as an enormous threat.

Can he evade them? What do they have planned for Brent and the others?

Thoughts: Set in Akron, Ohio - in the year 2025. Issue #1 introduces you to Brent Marks, who just wants normalcy. But he is a vitro. A vitro is a person who was cured of genetic disorder. Being cured has resulted in high intelligence. As of just recently all vitros are now considered dangerous and part of a terrorist cell.

Prior to reading it I hadn't heard of Pariah, but I'm glad I got a chance to check it out. I enjoyed both the characters and story. Pariah is both dark and funny. Brent Marks is captivating character. I loved the futuristic setting, it had me eager to learn more about this world. I thought the art was fantastic, I love the gritty feel to it.

Score: 4 Stars

[Review] - Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

Title: Anna Dressed In Blood
Author: Kendare Blake
Genre: Young Adult/Horror
Release Date: August 30, 2011

Summary:  Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

Thoughts: Cas Lowood comes from a long line of men who kill the dead, an inherited skill. He recently just finished up a case and now he's headed to Canada to kill the infamous Anna Dressed In Blood. Anna was killed in 1958 and ever since she's killed every person who has stumbled into her house. That is until she meets Cas.

This is one of the most spookiest books I've read in a long time, and I mean that in the best way. It gave me the chills, and that doesn't happen often. I love ghost stories, and this one definitely fit the bill. Anna Dressed In Blood is bloody brilliant and a must read. The story had me on the edge of my seat. Especially when the events of Anna's horrifying death are revealed. I loved the connection between Cas and Anna. Both of them have this lonely existence and even though she is dead, they just click. It was both eerie and beautiful.  If you are a fan of Supernatural, you are gonna love this book.

Bonfires of Bonefires:
Origins of Halloween

By Mayra Calvani

Halloween is not only a colourful night of fun, frights, sweets and costumes. It is a full-blown industry, with more than $14 billion spent each year on costumes, decorations, party supplies, candy and other paraphernalia.

How did it all get started?

The origins of Halloween are quite dark, and go all the way back to 2,000 years ago, to the Celtic Celebration of the Dead, or Samhain (Sah-ween), in what is now Ireland, the UK, and Northern France. The Celtic Festival took place each year on the eve of November first, which marked the end of summer and harvest season, and the beginning of their New Year and winter, a time associated with cold and death. Samhain festivities lasted for a couple of days, until about November 2nd.

The Celts believed that on October 31st, the last day of summer and New Year’s Eve, the boundaries between the living and the dead became blurred and thin, and spirits, both good and evil, roamed about on the streets and countryside and did as they wished. The Celts were especially frightened by the prospect of these evil souls harming the crops.

On this night, Celtic priests called Druids dressed in animal masks and skins and performed sacrifices to placate the gods and “ward off” spirits. Bonfires represented the sun, the power to fight dark forces. The Druids lit huge bonfires and burned animals, crops, and sometimes even humans. In fact, the word “bonfire” comes from “bonefire,” literally! (It’s interesting to note that the practice of burning humans continued as late as the 1600s).

Besides the Druids, people also performed their little “rituals.” To ward off spirits, they carved turnips and lit them with embers. To “fool” them, they wore animal masks or scary disguises. To placate them, they left fruits and nuts at their doorstep as a gift or offering, thus preventing future bad crops. This is the origin of “Trick or Treat.”

Around the 7th Century the Celebration of the Dead spread to Europe, but it became known as “All Hollows Eve,” or “Night of the Dead.” In parts of Britain and Ireland it also became known as “Mischief Night.”

Around the 800s the Christians moved to the Celtic lands and tried to eradicate all pagan beliefs and celebrations. In an attempt to placate the Celts, Pope Boniface IV designated November first as All Saints Day as an attempt to replace the pagan “All Hollows Eve.” Thus he “transformed” the Celebration of the Dead into a Christian holy day.

It is believed that later the Irish brought the tradition of carving turnips to America. However, they soon found out that there weren’t as many turnips there, and that pumpkins were a lot bigger and better to carve scary faces on.

Eventually “All Hollows Eve” came to be known as Halloween.

The traditional Halloween symbols we know today, like witches, black cats, ghosts, pumpkins and candles appeared in the US around the 1800s. Entrepreneur minds no doubt realized the marketing potential. The whole concept of Halloween gradually became commercialized.

Today, in spite of its dark origins and although some religious people consider it an “evil” festival, Halloween is mostly regarded as a spooky yet harmless, fun, family celebration.

EMBRACED BY TH SHADOWS
By: Mayra Calvani

In a bazaar in Istanbul one evening, ten-year-old Alana Piovanetti sees a man standing in the shadows. He smiles, and over time she convinces herself that it was just her imagination that placed sharp fangs amongst those flashing teeth.

Twelve years later, Alana is surprised when she is chosen to manage a new restaurant opening in her home city of San Juan. She has neither training nor experience to justify her success. But La Cueva del Vampiro has the kind of ambiance she adores, for Alana has always had a penchant for horror and the dark side of life. Yet she is also plagued with dreams of dark sensuality, dreams that take on shattering reality when she meets the stunningly handsome, charismatic Sadash.

For Sadash is the man she saw in the shadows so many years before...and Sadash isn't human….
