Guest Blog & Giveaway with Kylie Brant

I'm happy to announce that I have Romantic Suspense author, Kylie Brant here as a guest today. Her newest series The Mindhunters debuted on September 1st with the release of Waking Nightmare. Book 2, Waking Evil comes out today (October 6th) and will be followed by Waking the Dead on November 3rd.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have a confession to make. I’m not a true paranormal reader. I admire the authors who can create other worlds and populate them with furry or fanged creatures they then make us care about. But my feet have always been too firmly rooted to the ground to suspend disbelief for long. I’m not sure what it says about me that I find it far easier to believe in serial killers and crazed criminals than in vampires and werewolves, but there you go.
There is a similarity between dark romantic thrillers and paranormals, however. Both have our hero and heroine fighting evil to save the world, or at least their part of it. And in doing so they overcome obstacles and fall in love. Which isn’t bad for a week or two’s work, any way you look at it! But the evil in my books most often takes on an all too human form.
I do love sprinkling hints of the paranormal in my stories. I’m fascinated by psychic phenomena, which keeps me watching Medium week after week despite Patricia Arquette’s acting ability, or lack thereof. There are no psychics in my newest release, but there is a hint of the supernatural.
Book 2 of The Mindhunters series hit the shelves Oct. 6. Each book in the back to back trilogy features a different investigator from a private forensics firm, headed by the legendary ex-FBI profiler, Adam Raiker. In Waking Evil, the heroine, Ramsey Clark, is a no nonsense investigator hired by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to help with a murder case in a small rural town. Ramsey believes in evidence, not superstition, so she’s not happy to find renowned parapsychologist Devlin Stryker dogging her steps at every turn.
And Devlin…well he’s got charm to spare, an admirable intellect, and an open mind. He’s exposed a lot of supernatural hoaxes, but has seen a few things in his career that can’t be explained away by science or pranks. One of the hardest things he’s ever done is to try convince Ramsey the local century old curse might have something to do with her murder victim.
Ramsey doesn’t want to hear about the red mist that appears over the town every generation, or the murders that follow its appearance in threes. But she is willing to admit the legend just might be playing a part in the crime as she tries to figure out if a killer is playing on everyone’s fears or if a prophecy is being fulfilled—one victim at a time.
The best part of researching this story was delving into parapsychology and tools of the trade. I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts. But I wouldn’t be above using an EMF meter, thermal scanner, and night vision video light in a place reputed to be haunted, as long as I had plenty of company. Did I mention I’m a huge coward?
How about you? If you had a chance to accompany a ghost hunter some night, would you go? Have you had a paranormal experience that made you a believer? Or maybe you’ve traveled somewhere that’s haunted? I’d love to hear about it!
  1. I'm the total opposite of Kylie, I'm a Paranormal Girl. I love it. I haven't really dipped into the Romantic Suspense genre, but I'm might have to check out this series. Looks really good.
    Although I'm not a stranger to suspense. I do love suspense and criminal shows. I'm a addicted to CSI.
    I am a believer. I love ghost stories and ghost hunting. I have never been on a hunt, but I think it would be cool to go on one. Just as long as I leave the coward part of me at home. LOL! ;)
  3. I've always loved watching ghost shows (watching Ghost Hunters right now matter of fact) and reading about them but I'm not sure if I'll ever be brave enough to willingly come face to face with a ghost!
  6. I love Dark Romantic Thrillers! I'm so-so on the paranormal, myself. Depends on the characters and plot.
  7. Anna, every year about this time the newspaper will list the places in our state reputed to be haunted. There's usually a team or two who are slated to check it out on Halloween. I'm always tempted to check it out, especially since I wouldn't be alone, lol.
  8. Amgidlee--good luck with the contest!
    Alicia--maybe if we were contacting a loved one, it would be much less scary?
    Razlover, sounds like we're on! You scare up the ghost hunt (pun intended) and Anna and I will...maybe hold the flashlights?
    Ladytink, sometimes it's not actually seeing a ghost but spiritural orbs, or finding a difference in temperature that indicates a ghostly presence. Did you ever see Sixth Sense? Loved that show but can't say I'd want those ghosts visiting me!
    Beleth and Nina, there are intriguing stories about the supernatural overseas, too. All those castles and haunted moors...!
    Barbara, you and me both! I also love straight thrillers, but enjoy a dash of romance with them most.
  9. Kylie, that sounds like fun.
    You know I could so hold a flashlight. LOL!
    I came across this website a few years ago. They listed haunted places by state and ones in other countires, it's pretty interesting.
  11. Anna, those sites are intriguing! Which one should we check out, LOL?
    Hi Crystal, the book has more of a hint of supernatural than true paranormal, but it was a lot of fun to write, at a bit different for me!
  12. I am a huge fan of the paranormal genre and would love to go spook hunting! I've never had an encounter before but I do believe in it.
    And while I haven't read many romantic suspense books, I think these sound great. So here's hoping I win!
  13. Joder, when I was in New Orleans (pre-Katrina) we did a ghost walk through the cemeteries. That was interesting. When I get to Savannah (someday!) I hope to take their haunted tour.
  14. I am a believer, but would not want to accompany a ghost hunter. I have not had a paranormal experience, nor do I want to have one.
  16. Hi Kylie,
    Happy Release Day. I enjoy stories with paranormal elements. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to hang out with a ghost hunter. I've never had a paranormal experience. Never seen or felt a spirit.
  21. Hi Kylie and Anna!
    I've read lots of romantic suspense, I love Harley Jane Kozak, as well as many others.
    I also love mysteries, thrillers, investigative stories, Sandford, Patterson, Cornwell.
    But, anyone who haunts my blog knows I love fantasy, paranormal and urban fantasy are fantastic reads.
    I'm a believer, I love ghost stories. I'd go to visit/investigate a haunted house. How exciting!! That would be just too much fun! Count me in, lol.
  24. I love to read about the paranormal, but I'm not sure I'd want to participate in anything paranormal. I may not see ghosts, because I choose not to see them.
  25. Hi Kylie and Anna! Congrats on your second release Kylie -- it's awesome that these are all releasing so close together!
    I'm with you, I tend to BELIEVE more in the human evils, but I like my romantic suspense with real or imagined bad guys. So long as it's hot ;-)
    So, I'd go with a ghosthunter, for kicks, but I don't have much to offer in the way of being a believer.
