[Mini-Review]: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

I was totally sucked in when I seen the movie, Gone Girl The same happened when I watched the trailer for Dark Places. I couldn't wait for the movie, so I picked up the book. From the first page I was entranced.  This books is dark and suspenseful. Full of mystery that keeps you turning the page. Libby isn't necessarily a likeable character, but she grows on you. Dark Places is not my usually type of read but I loved this one and definitely recommend it.

[AudioBook Review]: Endless Knight by Kresley Cole

Title: Endless Knight
Author: Kresley Cole
Narrated: Emma Galvin
Series: The Arcana Chronicles
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: October 1, 2013

I received this book from Simon & Schuster Audio, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Shocking Secrets
Evie has fully come into her powers as the Tarot Empress, and Jack was there to see it all. She now knows that the teens who've been reincarnated as the Tarot are in the throes of an epic battle. It's kill or be killed, and the future of mankind hangs in the balance.

Unexpected Allies
With threats lurking around every corner, Evie is forced to trust her new found alliance. Together they must fight not only other Arcana, but also Bagmen zombies, post-apocalyptic storms, and cannibals.

Gut-Wrenching Treachery
When Evie meets Death, things get even more complicated. Though falling for Jack, she's drawn to the dangerous Endless Knight as well. Somehow the Empress and Death share a history, one that Evie can't remember—but Death can't forget.

Thoughts: Evie is the Empress, she has all her powers. Jack witnessed her using her powers and he was horrified. She is scared at where they stand and that he'll walk away.  Death is constantly whispering in her mind and with danger at every step Evie finds her world more chaotic than ever before.

Excellent read! I loved book one, Poison Princess - so I was excited to jump right into the sequel. I wasn't disappointment. Death was delicious and very tempting, and even with the new revelation I still really like Jack as well.  Endless Knight is a captivating story, dark and dangerous. New tarot cards are introduced.  Ms. Cole never fails to pack a punch. Due to some of the scenes I do think that this book moved from YA to Paranormal Romance.  Definitely A must read.

Endless Knight is narrated by Emma Galvin. If you have listened to the audio books of the Divergent series, you'll recognize her as the voice of Tris but with a slight southern accent. I found it to be a nice surprise and very much enjoyed her reading.

[Review] - Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Title: Lies Beneath
Author: Anne Greenwood Brown
Series: Lies Beneath
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 12, 2012

I received this book for review from Random House, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake.

Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistible good looks and charm on unsuspecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him

Thoughts: Calder White is a merman. With his three mermaid sisters, they migrate every summer to Lake Superior - home.  To keep going they must feed on the energy of humans, which in turn kills the humans.  The sisters have found a relative of the man who killed their Mother. They plan to get their revenge once and for all, and they want Calder to be the bait.

Mermaids in Lake Superior - being from Minnesota I jumped at the chance to read this book. I was absolutely enthralled with it.

I really liked Calder and felt bad for him at times. You get the feeling that for the most part he doesn't enjoy the life of a merman. Where as his sisters Maris, Pavati & Tallulah relish it. I loved this book. It was an exciting story with alluring characters. Filled with danger, love and murderous mermaids.  Lies Beneath was fantastic read. A story that is rich and refreshing. Fantasy comes alive in the North.  When you think of mermaids you probably wouldn't think Lake Superior but for me it was an awesome setting. I can't wait to read more about this world. I would definitely recommend this one to fans of mermaid stories.

Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. [ARC Review] - Darker Still

Title: Darker Still
Author: Leanna Renee Hieber
Series: Magic Most Foul
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: November 1, 2011

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: “I was obsessed.

It was as if he called to me, demanding I reach out and touch the brushstrokes of color swirled onto the canvas. It was the most exquisite portrait I’d ever seen. Everything about Lord Denbury was unbelievable-- utterly breathtaking and eerily lifelike.

There was a reason for that. Because despite what everyone said, Denbury never had committed suicide. He was alive. Trapped within his golden frame.

I’ve crossed over into his world within the painting and I’ve seen what dreams haunt him. They haunt me too. He and I are inextricably linked- bound together to watch the darkness seeping through the gas-lit cobblestone streets of Manhattan. And unless I can free him soon, things will only get darker still..."

Thoughts: Natalie Stewart has been mute since the day her mother died. The year is 1880 and Natalie has just been discharged from the asylum. She feels like she's leaving one prison - just to enter another. The she learns about the painting of Lord Denbury and is taken on an unexpected journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed Natalie's story.  The story is set out in journal entries, news clippings and letters, which was compelling. It definitely gives more to the story.  This is the first time I've read with a mostly mute character. I found Natalie to be very interesting. A little lost, but open for anything.  Darker Still is mysterious and richly dark. A great mystery and romance. Everything I've come to love in Ms. Hieber's gothic tales.
