[ARC Review]: The Silver Witch by Paula Brackston

Title: The Silver Witch
Author: Paula Brackston
Genre: Historical Fiction/Paranormal
Release Date: April 21, 2015

I received this book from St. Martin's Press, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary: A year after her husband’s sudden death, ceramic artist Tilda Fordwells finally moves into the secluded Welsh cottage that was to be their new home. She hopes that the tranquil surroundings will help ease her grief, and lessen her disturbing visions of Mat’s death. Instead, the lake in the valley below her cottage seems to spark something dormant in her – a sensitivity, and a power of some sort. Animals are drawn to her, electricity shorts out when she’s near, and strangest of all, she sees a new vision; a boatful of ancient people approaching her across the water.

On this same lake in Celtic times lived Seren, a witch and shaman. She was respected but feared, kept separate from the community for her strange looks. When a vision came to her of the Prince amid a nest of vipers she warned of betrayal from one of his own. Prince Brynach both loved and revered her, but could not believe someone close to him wished him harm, even as the danger grew.

In her own time, Tilda’s grief begins to fade beside her new found powers and a fresh love. When she explores the lake’s ancient magic and her own she discovers Seren, the woman in her vision of the boat. Their two lives strangely mirror each others, suggesting a strong connection between the women. As Tilda comes under threat from a dark power, one reminiscent of Seren’s prophecy, she must rely on Seren and ancient magic if death and disaster are not to shatter her life once more.

Thoughts: This book is set in Wales and tells the tale of two women. Tilda, a widow of present day and Seren a witch/shaman of Celtic times.  The Silver Witch was an excellent read.  I was enthralled from the beginning. A story of strong women, love and magic. The past and present, magic and fantasy are weaved together stunningly.  Ms. Brackston brings the sweeping landscapes of Wales to life.  It is descriptive and beautiful. Makes you feel like you are there with the characters. A must read.

[ARC Review]: A Veil of Secrets by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Veil of Secrets
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: December 2014

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Some secrets are best forgotten.

Fresh from the battlefields of Erania, Marne rides south with Edan, headed for the city of Beltania. Among the Mimetidae guards accompanying them is Asher, who’s been a thorn in her side since the day they met. He’s rude and abrasive…yet he was the first to volunteer as escort.

Marne dreams of a fresh start where no one knows who—or what—she is. But first, they must cross the veil. Rumor has it spirits haunt that grim stretch of road, and unwary travelers who enter are never heard from again.

Veil or no veil, Asher is honor bound to see Marne safely to her new home. Though truth be told, Marne leaving Erania is the last thing he wants. This journey is his final chance to convince her distance will only make his heart grow fonder.

When Edan is lost to the mists, Marne is trapped in a strange land with no allies—with a man who draws her closer every day. Closer to her heart, and her secrets. Secrets she must reveal if they are to save the one man bent on tearing them apart.

Warning: This book contains one heroine willing to fly into the face of danger and the hero who gives her heart wings. This adventure is BYOM, Bring Your Own Meal. Trust me, where we’re going, takeout is to die for. Literally.

Thoughts: Great Read! Marne & Asher's relationship has a bit of a rocky beginning, but turned out beautifully. A Veil of Shadows was an exciting read. Filled with danger, action and romance. Pascale, sister of Maven Lourdes makes another appearance. In this book her back and forth fighting with Lleu was fun. I hope Pascale will get her own book.  I love spending time in Araneae Nation. I'm always amazed how intricate the world is.

[Review]: A Heart of Ice by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Heart of Ice
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae
Genre: Fantasy Romance.
Release Date: August 5, 2014

I received this title from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Reine knows marriage isn’t about love. It’s about making the best bargain you can with what you have and then living with the consequences. Wedding vows are alliances given voice, and I do is on the tip of her tongue.

Ennis is a man on a mission to woo the future Araneidae maven, whether she wants him or not. Her clan is wealthy, prosperous and in dire need of the one thing his people have to offer—protection.  But one look at her and all thought of his obligations vanish. He’ll court Reine, but he wants the feisty heiress all to himself.

Forced to entertain offers from her bevy of suitors, Reine is torn between duty to her people and loyalty to herself. Ennis is the man she wants, but is he the future paladin her fragile clan needs? She can choose to lead with her head or, for once, she can follow her heart.

Thoughts: This short story is a prequel in the Araneae series. Reine & Ennis are parents to Lourdes who is the heroine of book one, A Hint of Frost.  A short but fun read.  The story of Reine & Ennis was sweet and sexy.  Ennis definitely had to work hard for Reine's hand and heart. I also enjoyed young Isolde, she's the best friend who can get you into all sorts of mischief. A must read for Araneae fans.

A Heart of Ice is featured in the anthology Love Is... This anthology features 40 short stories.

[Review]: A Kiss of Venom by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Kiss of Venom
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: February 5, 2014

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  All’s fair in love and murder…

Betrayed by her lover and exiled from her clan home, Nicolette has carved herself a new identity from the heart of her old life. Hardened by grief and desperate to survive, she hones a new skill set…and the daggers that go along with it.

Armand is heir to the wealthiest clan in the Araneae Nation. His entire life is as mapped as his heritage. Tradition dictates his every decision, and the one choice he ever made for himself cost him the woman he loved.

When Nicolette is offered a contract she can’t refuse, she returns to Erania with deadly intentions. Her secrets are safe behind the façade she created. Or they would be if Armand would stop chipping at the cracks in her veneer.

One kiss ignites an old flame, and suddenly their history is in danger of repeating. Armand falls for Nicolette’s charade, but she can’t let a second chance at happiness distract her from her mission. Someone in the Araneidae nest is marked for death, and Nicolette aims to deliver.

Warning: This story contains one heroine bent on revenge and one hero determined to atone for his sins. Also included are venom kisses, poison hangovers, pointy objects and questionable taste in condiments. Expect fireworks, near-death experiences and one surprise ten years in the making.

Thoughts: Armand & Nicolette's story was an excellent read. Their past history had me absolutely intrigued. With each page I was eager to find out more about them. His out right flirting and her unwanted jealous was just fun. A Kiss of Venom was exactly what I needed. I was in a bit of a reading slump and it certainly refreshed me. With the Araneae Nation Ms. Edwards has created vast and dangerous world. But it also shines with love and hope.  This was a sweet story, I definitely recommend this one.

While this was a fun and fast read, I don't consider it a stand alone. I would suggest reading the previous books.

[Review]: A Breath of Winter by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Breath of Winter
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: December 10, 2013

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary: There’s no easy cure for a love of epidemic proportions.

Zuri and her mercenary brothers had a simple mission. Transport a captured harbinger to Erania and collect the bounty. But this job turns out to be anything but easy.

Their welcome to the northland is nothing short of frigid. A scuffle with border guards and her prisoner’s attempted escape leave Zuri injured—and she and her brothers stuck in quarantine. Worse, the bounty comes with silken strings attached. Strings held by a scientist with a daring, dangerous plan.

Because Zuri and her prisoner barged in before his fail-safes were in place, Henri had no choice but to lock them all down until he’s sure there’s no risk of spreading plague. He’d planned to study the harbinger, but it’s the mercenary holding the leash who intrigues him the most.

When Henri’s experiment goes awry, they learn they’ve all been pawns in a plan with one goal: bring the Araneae Nation to its knees. Zuri is forced to make a choice that could sign her death warrant—or sacrifice everyone she loves.|

Product Warning: This book contains a chair-bound heroine who won’t let anyone—least of all a man—push her around. Expect tea-drinking, net-tossing, and knife-wielding. Should you feel compelled to indulge in a bear ride, please keep your hands on the reins and your feet in the stirrups. Author not responsible for possible maulings.

Thoughts: Mercenary Zuri, along with her brothers are on a job to transport the women who caused the plague.  When they are close to their destination, they encounter trouble, Zuri and one of her brothers are injured.  They are taken in and put on lock down by Henri.  His intentions good, but he does have other motives. He plans to study the Harbinger to see how the plague was started. What wasn't expected was Henri finding Zuri so captivating.

Excellent read! I really enjoyed Zuri and Henri's story. They are very different people, a mercenary and a healer.  From their first meeting they have this great flirty banter that was just fun to read. Henri is a character that was introduced in the first book, A Hint of Frost. So, glad he got his own story. A Breath of Winter is such an enticing read, one of my favorites in the series. If the story description doesn't get you interested, the beautiful cover will. Definitely a must read.

For those who are curious, this isn't what I would call a stand alone. Definitely read the other books before this one, especially A Time of Dying.

[ARC Review] - A Time of Dying by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Time of Dying
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: July 30, 2013

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  They just might survive…if they don’t kill each other first.

Once the future Segestriidae maven, Kaidi lived a privileged life. Now she spends her nights haunting cities ravaged by the plague. Spade in hand, she stalks rows of freshly dug graves for corpses…and then she takes their heads.

Her new life is caked in blood and spattered with gore, but it’s hers. At least until—to her fury—she’s caught napping.

A plague survivor by the skin of his teeth, Murdoch risks his neck to solve the mysteries left in its wake. Bodies have gone missing. Guards have left their posts and never returned home.

When he rouses a female dozing among the dead, he’s unprepared for the violence of her response. Or his. Beneath the grime, she’s lovely. Too bad the blood under her fingernails belongs to his clansmen.

He has no choice but to follow this alluring creature deeper into her world of winged beasts and flesh-eating monsters. She holds the knowledge he craves, but the price is high—and they may both pay for it with their lives.

Warning: This book contains one heroine in desperate need of a bath and one hero willing to wash away her sins. Expect threats, swears and general cursing. Love is a slippery slope, and these two are sliding.

Thoughts: Kadi was on the way to becoming a Segestriidae maven, but the plague hit and she lost everything. Barley surviving herself. She spends her time taking her rage out on corpses already put to rest with her spade.  She is a lost soul. When Murdoch walks into her life it is a shock for both of them.

Fantastic read! From the first page your thrown into the thick of things. At times it was almost like I was watching a movie. For me it was that vivid. Kaidi is quite a mysterious character. She comes off violent  -  but her evident sorrow and feelings of guilt make her an interesting and likable character.  A Time of Dying is a dark, bloody and sensual read. Edwards has written a excellent installment. If you have been reading Araneae Nation, you won't want to miss this one.

[ARC Review] - A Cast of Shadows by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Cast of Shadows
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: February 12, 2013

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  The strongest net is no match for destiny.

Daraja has grown up watching her brothers journey down the river on the traditional Deinopidae rite of passage. Each returned with riches from their travels, and lovers with whom to share their lives.

Now she has reached the age where she would strike out on her own to seek her fortune—if she were male. Instead, she is expected to sit patiently, weave her nets and wait for the river to bring a husband to her.

Patience, however, has never been her strong suit.

Brynmor haunts the forest surrounding the city of Cathis, his disembodied spirit inextricably bound to the wild canis roaming his lands. Until the day he stumbles across a brazen trespasser in his woods.

Compelled to step in when the canis suspect her of poaching one of their own, Brynmor fears he has lost a piece of his ragged soul to the feisty, adventure-seeking female. And when the canis confront the real poachers, he is forced to choose which life to sacrifice. Hers…or his own.

Warning: This book contains one heroine with a knack for weaving nets and one hero who relishes getting caught. Expect singing, some howling, ghostly shenanigans, and the start of a love that transcends death.

Thoughts: Daraja is a Deinopidaeon on a traditional journey to find her one true love.  Shade Brynmor comes across Daraja fishing with a net. From then on Daraja is on his mind and he feels very protective of her.

A fun, quick read. A Cast of Shadows is a novella - telling the story of Daraja & Brynmor. Brynmor was featured in the last book.  If you wanted more of the character you won't want to miss this story.  After everything Brynmor has been through, I'm glad he finally found some love and happiness.   I loved the story, and have been really enjoying the series. If you haven't check the series out yet, I highly recommend you give it a try.

If your not familiar with Brynmor I would suggest reading A Feast for Souls, but it's not required to be able to enjoy this novella.

[ARC Reviews] - A Feast of Souls by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Feast of Souls
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: December 18, 2012

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  The only way to save her is to bind their souls as one.

Born with the ability to communicate with the dead, few things take Mana by surprise. But when a canis lopes into her life, announcing himself as the long-dead father of a childhood friend, she’s shocked. To make matters worse, he has a dire message that she alone can deliver.

Now Mana must face Vaughn, the male who inspired one too many girlish fantasies, and impart the spirit’s message—without acknowledging her source—so the soul can be laid to rest.

With rumors of a burgeoning clan war setting his nerves on edge, the last thing Vaughn needs is for an innocent to get caught in the cross hairs. But the woman he remembers as an awkward girl refuses to leave his side until he’s heard her out. That’s not the only change in her that calls to him. Her kindness soothes his battle-scarred soul—and he craves her in ways a warrior shouldn’t.

When they are both captured, they learn of an even greater threat. The plague devastating the southlands has come to his clan home. And his best—and only—chance to keep his people alive is the female who walks among the dead.

Warning: This book contains one fierce hero with a nose for danger, one stubborn heroine who smells like trouble, and one wolfish spirit who makes most relationships with the in-laws seem downright tame. Fur, fangs and some biting should be expected. But never fear, the hero has a sword, and he knows how to use it.

Thoughts: Mana is a spirit walker and favorite cousin of Rhys the Cold.  Vaughn (brother to Rhys) is escorting her back to her home along with the traitor Pascale. Mid way through the trip they are captured by another clan.  During captivity Mana is being followed by a spirit, one with a difficult and urgent mission for her.

I loved this story. Mana and Vaughn aren't the likeliest pair - but there is a desire between them that is potent. I especially enjoyed Vaughn. A bad boy, rough - but flirtatious and tender when it comes to Mana.  He is delicious to read about. A Feast of Souls is an excellent story. It's the second installment in the Araneae Nation and so far it's my favorite book in the series.  Ms. Edwards has created a unique world filled with danger and romance.

[Review] - The First Spell by Rachel Carrington

Title: The First Spell
Author: Rachel Carrington
Series: Hot Magic
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: July 17, 2012

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Captivated by a wizard with amnesia, Jensen knows he’s only asking for trouble when he takes her to his world. Finding out she’s a member of an enemy guild doesn’t change his connection to her. And their first kiss only strengthens his need to keep her close.

Barely knowing her own name, Charlemaine begins having horrible visions of impeding doom, and she’s labeled an enemy of Jensen’s guild. She doesn’t trust she isn’t being used as bait to bring down the group of powerful wizards, but she doesn’t want to leave Jensen.

Jensen will risk anything to save Charlemaine’s life when magic gives way to betrayal. But will the need for vengeance overcome even the strongest love?

Thoughts:  Jensen knows taking Charlemaine is something he shouldn't do, but he can't help it. Their kisses set them on fire and finding out she is forbidden and an enemy doesn't change his feelings in the least. All he knows is that he loves her and will protect her at all costs.

Good Read! I haven't read the other books in the series, but I did enjoy this short story.  Jensen and Charlemaine are a great couple to read about.  Of course they are forbidden to be with each other, but that made the story even better. I'm a sucker for forbidden loves. The First Spell is a fast, fun read. Sweet and sexy. I loved the fantasy elements. This is a prequel story to Carrington's Hot Magic  series. From what I can tell this story can be read as a stand-alone.

[ARC Review] - A Lady and Her Magic by Tammy Falkner

Title: A Lady and Her Magic
Author: Tammy Falkner
Genre: Fantasy/Historical Romance
Release Date: September 1, 2012

I received this book from Sourcebooks, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Rules Are Made To Be Disobeyed...

Sophia Thorne is new to the Regency's glittering high society, which resembles her magical homeland only insofar as both places are filled with ridiculous rules. Which means no matter where she goes, she's bound for trouble...

And Scandals Are Meant To Be Shocking...

The Duke of Robinsworth has flaunted and shocked society for years. In a moment of fateful mischief, Robinsworth encounters the enchanting and distinctly scandalous Sophia. Between her streak of magical mischief and his penchant for scandal, they're about to take rule-breaking to a whole new level...

Thoughts: Since the death of his wife the Duke of Robinsworth has been a bit of a recluse. Especially with all the rumors going around that he actually killed his wife. So the Duke finds it simpler to stay away from society functions. Then he meets the enchanting Sophie Thorne. She is new to the ton and it's her first time away from her homeland and she's on a mission.

I loved it! The story was a thrilling read. Both Sophia and Ashley (The Duke) are interesting characters to read about.  Ashley's daughter was a treat as well. It was amazing how she went from brat to angel in a matter of seconds. I loved that faeries are among the ton. Definitely adds a new twist to the Regency.  A Lady and Her Magic is a fun, romantic and magical. I highly recommend this one.

**Ms. Falkner is one half of the writing duo behind Lydia Dare. If you enjoy their Regency Vampires and Werewolves you'll love Falkner's debut novel.

[Review] - Soul Weaver by Hailey Edwards

Title: Soul Weaver
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Wicked Kin
Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy Romance
Release Date: August 7, 2012

I received this book through Joan Schulhafer Publishing& Media Consulting and NetGalley, in exchange for a honest review.

Summary:  Since the accident that nearly took her life, Chloe suffers from acute agoraphobia. Living alone above her family’s bookstore, she spends restless nights terrified by strange visions . . . until a mysterious stranger appears and offers her salvation. Chloe is drawn to the ethereal, gorgeous Nathaniel—but her haunted soul warns her there is more to him than meets the eye.

An archangel who roams Earth collecting souls of the newly departed, Nathanial is the sole witness to the accident that should have taken Chloe’s life. Seduced by the purity of her soul, he defies Providence by saving her life. But his attempt at kindness marks Chloe for damnation, and makes her an unwitting pawn in a game of unholy ambition. Now together they must fight the demons of Hell itself—for a love that defies the boundaries of Heaven and Earth.

Thoughts: Nathaniel is a collector of souls. He witnesses a horrible accident. An accident that should have killed Chloe McCrea. But her plea - rips at this heart and he does the forbidden and saves her. A moment that marks her, essentially making her a target for demons.

Angel stories are quiet popular at the moment. Some I haven't enjoyed and others not so much. But with Soul Weaver, I loved it! The beginning was a bit slow for me. But ultimately the slow bits were worth it - to get to the heart of the story. The connection that Chloe & Nathaniel have is intriguing. I loved that Chloe owns a bookstore and her problems with anxiety were interesting. She felt real I think readers are gonna easily relate to her, I know I did. Between the characters and world building ...there is a lot to like about this story. Soul Weaver is a fresh take. It's both dark and vibrant.  A book not to pass up.

Title: Fire Kissed

I received this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Fae Fire... It is Kaye Brand's power to wield. But outcast from her kind, she's been selling herself to the highest bidder - money for her survival in exchange for a magic glimpse into the flames of the future.

For Jack, mage-born Kaye is off limits, no matter how hot the impossible attraction between them. But in the coming darkness, beset by danger and desire, everything is about to change...

Thoughts: Kaye Brand is a mage and her power is wielding fire. To survive she's been selling her powers - for the right price.  Jack Bastian wants nothing to do with the mage, but he's gonna need Kaye's help. Especially if he wants to take out Ferrol Grey, Kaye's one time fiance.

Fire Kissed is the first book in the Shadow Kissed series, a spin off of the Shadow series. If you enjoyed the Shadow books you won't want to miss this new one.

Excellent addition to the Shadowverse. I loved it. Kaye Brand and Jack Bastian make a great team. Kaye is a powerful character, especially with her fire power. But I really loved Jack. He is simply a delicious character. Fire Kissed is a wonderful read. Filled with shadow, mages and angels. Ms. Kellison writes beautifully dark stories that never fail to amaze me. [ARC Review] - Eversworn by Hailey Edwards

Title: Eversworn
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Daughters of Askara
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: June 26, 2012

I received this book for review from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Steal the salt. Bind the grimoire. Escape the male.

When an exchange of stolen goods in the Feriana marketplace turns sour, Isabeau stumbles from the encounter bruised and laden with new orders to complete an even larger heist. With her child’s life at stake, there’s no room for error—or allies.

Armed with a lethal book of spells, she strikes a dangerous bargain with Roland Bernhard. Steal a shipment of salt from the Feriana colony, and she’ll have her freedom—and her daughter. It’s all she’s ever wanted. At least it was…until she runs into Dillon Preston.

Dillon is out of commission after a mine explosion, and itching for a distraction. He gets it when the female who saved his leg arrives at the colony with nothing but flimsy excuses and even flimsier attire. She’s after something, but is it him—or the salt?

Trapped in a desperate bid to gain true freedom, Isabeau is willing to sacrifice her life for her daughter’s, but Dillon has other plans. He wants a package deal, and he’s not willing to lose either female, even if it means the future king of Sere’s head will roll.

Warning: This title contains a heroine desperate to save her daughter and a hero determined to make them a family. It also includes wings, horns and other assorted appendages.

Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed Isabeau & Dillion's story. It's one of desperation, sacrifice and a heated passion that burns bright.  I did find myself once again frustrated with the heroine, but it's a factor that makes her such an interesting character. Every time I read a Daughters of Askara book, I'm always surprised. It's a magical world that is both a fantasy world and modern day Earth. Ms. Edwards does an excellent job of mixing the two.  Eversworn is a thrilling read filled with intrigue, adventure and romance.  Fantasy lovers beware this series can be addicting.

[ARC Review] - A Hint of Frost by Hailey Edwards

Title: A Hint of Frost
Author: Hailey Edwards
Series: Araneae Nation
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Release Date: April 17, 2012

I received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Hope dangles by a silken thread.

When the head of the Araneidae clan is found poisoned in her nest, her eldest daughter, Lourdes, becomes their clan’s new maven. If her clan is to survive, she has but one choice: she must marry before her nest is seized. All she needs is a warrior fierce enough to protect her city and safeguard her clansmen. Such a male is Rhys the Cold.

Born the youngest son of an impoverished maven, the only things Rhys has to his name are his sword and his mercenary reputation. His clan is starving, but their fondness for the flesh of fellow Araneaeans makes them unwelcome dinner guests. Torn between loyalty to his clan and fascination with his future bride, Rhys’s first taste of Lourdes threatens to melt the cold encasing his heart.

Amid the chaos of battle, Lourdes’s sister disappears and is feared captured. Lourdes and Rhys pursue their enemies into the southlands, where they discover an odd plague ravaging southern clans as it travels north, to Erania. Determined to survive, Lourdes will discover whether she’s worth her silk or if she’s spun the thread by which her clan will hang.

Warning: This book contains one mercenary hero with a biting fetish, one determined heroine who gets nibbled, and an answer to the age-old question, “What does dragon taste like?” Matricide and sibling rivalry are available upon request. The house special is revenge, best served cold.

Thoughts: Lourdes of the Arandidae Clan  has just lost her parent to murder. To save her nest she must accept the help of another clan and marry a warrior of their Maven's choosing.  But can Lourdes melt Rhys the cold...

Great read! A Hint of Frost is fresh, fast-paced and entertaining. I enjoyed the story, but what I really loved was the dynamic between Lourdes & Rhys. They are two very different creatures. But together they give each other something they never knew they needed or wanted.  Ms. Edwards has weaved a wonderful beginning to a new series. If you are looking to feed your fantasy addiction, this is the perfect story to read.

Release Date: February 21, 2012

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary:  He can be a slave to his past…or allow her love to free him.

There’s such a thing as too much change. Emma’s sister is mated. Revolution is brewing in her home realm. The last straw: her would-be mate is back from the dead and back under her skin—yet when it comes to the last five years, he’s not talking.

Desperate for a chance to start her own life, she answers the queen’s call to ensure equality for all of Askara’s newly freed slaves. It’s the perfect opportunity to escape a heartbreak in the making named Harper.

Harper loses a piece of his fractured soul when Emma walks away. His lies were meant to protect her from torturous years that drove him to the point of madness. Instead, when he comes to her a year later to help avert a crisis in a freed-slave community, the wedge those lies drove between them is firmly in place.

As their new lives collide with old wounds, they race to stop a threat that could not only destroy the queen, but send Harper back to the hell he escaped. Emma must decide if the man she still loves deserves equal rights to her heart.

Warning: This title contains torn pants, ripped gowns, and sand in uncomfortable places. It also includes one overcompensating villain, one gnarly priest, and two battered hearts willing to give this thing called love one last chance.

Thoughts: Fabulous read! Daughter of Askara is a wonderful world to read about with an incredible set of characters.  I enjoyed Evermine, which is the second book in the series.  Emma & Harper's journey was an interesting one. They are very likable couple but, I found myself frustrated with them. They are a couple with personal issues and relationship issues and both have a stubbornness that will make you want to tear your hair out.  Ms. Edwards winged-creatures are dominating, sexy and just plain fun to read about.  This series is a must read in my book.

I received this book for review from Sourcebooks.

Summary: IF HIS POWERS ARE DISCOVERED, HIS FATHER WILL DESTROY HIM...

In the magical land ruled by ruthless Elven lords, The Fire Lord's son Dominic Raikes plays a deadly game to conceal his growing might from his malevolent father--until his arranged bride awakens in him passions he thought he had buried forever.

Then Dominic and Cassandra together uncover an unspeakable evil, one that threatens the destruction of the magical realm they would give their souls to save.

Thoughts: Dominic is the son of The Fire Lord, who has to be very cautious that his father doesn't find out that his powers are growing. If the The Fire Lord finds out it could be the end of Dominic. He's surround by danger, even from the person closest to him. Lady Cassandra, Dominic's new bride is innocent, but at the same time very dangerous.

The Fire Lord's Lover was beautiful written. It was very Tolkien-esque from the cover to the characters, which was a plus for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I loved both the intrigue and danger. Ms Kennedy's lush description of characters and their surroundings brings the world to life in a way that makes you eager to read more. Original and captivating, a story that will delight both fantasy and historical romance fans.

[Review] - Everlong

Title: Everlong
Author: Hailey Edwards
Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal Romance
Release Date: March 30, 2010

I received this book for review from the author.

Summary: The most damaged heart can fly with the right pair of wings.

Madelyn’s life is far from fairytale perfect. She is second in line for the throne of a corrupt, brutal monarchy. Or at least she was until her dark guardian sacrificed his life to hide her safely in a realm of infinite possibilities.

For years she’s lived among a colony of escaped slaves as her guardian’s widow. Even in this simple life, though, nothing is as it seems. Her hero kept a secret—a younger brother named Clayton Delaney. Warrior, winged demon…and the man who now wants to lay claim to her heart.

No longer cast in his brother’s shadow, Clayton meets all obstacles head on, including one named Maddie. His infatuation with her reaches the breaking point when she undergoes a royal rite of passage, going into heat and pushing them both over the edge.

Just as Maddie learns that some risks are worth taking, she discovers that her guardian may be alive. And she’s forced to make a choice between the man she’d thought she loved, and the demon willing to lend her his wings.

Warning: This book contains virginal angst, a hero who’s too nice for his own good, wings, claws, and convenient use of glamour. It contains heartbreaking loss, conversation with a woodland creature, and sweet, sweet demon loving.

Thoughts: Everlong was an enticing read, from page one I was intrigued. A wonderful mix of paranormal and fantasy. Ms. Edwards has created the perfect definition of fantasy romance. The story opens with an exciting fight scene that instantly pulls you in. I really loved the journey the characters went on. Comparing the situation at the beginning of the book to where they end up is pretty amazing. All elements blended well together. The sexy heroes, danger, the evil relatives and of course romance. A very enjoyable read.

Over the last few months I've enjoyed several stories with winged heroes, Everlong is another one the add to that list. If you enjoy fantasy and hunky winged-demons -- then this is the book for you.

[ARC Review] - Lucan

Title: Lucan
Author: Susan Kearney
Series: The Pendragon Legacy
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Year: 2009

I received this book for review from Hachette Book Group.

Summary: THEIR LOVE IS FORBIDDEN
Healer and high priestess of her people, Lady Cael is fated to life without a mate. But a mysterious explorer named Lucan Rourke doesn’t know her secrets, and his touch makes her crave a future that her extraordinary birthright has forbidden her...

BUT DANGER IS NO MATCH FOR DESIRE
Lucan has just one mission on Pendragon: to find the mythical Holy Grail, Earth’s only hope for survival. His powerful attraction to Cael is a distraction he can’t afford, unless he convinces her to join forces with him. Yet working so closely together only heightens their passion...even when the terrifying truth of Cael’s heritage threatens to shatter Lucan’s every belief—and the galaxy itself.

Thoughts: Lucan & Cael both work in the same lab on Pendragon & are instantly attracted to one another. Both their worlds, Earth and Pendragon are in desperate situations. The one thing both of their worlds need is the Holy Grail. It could also be the one thing that could tear them apart.

Lucan is a non-stop, entertaining read. Filled with adventure and steamy scenes. Lucan and Cael sizzle. Ms. Kearney has done a wonderful job creating this new world. My favorite part of the story has been the dragon element. I think fans of the King Arthur legends will enjoy this new twist. This was my first time reading Susan Kearney's work, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.

In the Land of Oz... (the kinky version)

I had previously read R.G Alexander's Regina In the Sun and really enjoyed and thought I'd give one of her another books a try. I found this book- Not In Kansas. It's m/m, which I don't usually read, but I thought why not give it a go. It turned out be quite an interesting novella, it was steamy and funny. What more can you ask for. The Wizard of Oz connection was great too. ;)

Book Description: Gliders and Wizards and Sex Droids… Oh My!

Kansas Frayne has everything he needs. Except a life—and love. A freak storm changes all that when it hurls him into the darkness. He wakes up to find he’s been thrust into a world of promiscuous and directionally challenged beings, sensually sentient water and servants created solely to fulfill any imaginable fantasy.
The sexuality he’s long denied is tested to its limits, especially when a darkly erotic wizard issues the ultimate challenge. If Kansas wants to go home, he must fulfill one task. Resist the allure of the unbearably beautiful king.

Sounds easy enough.

Until he gets a look at the golden monarch. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and Kansas quickly realizes this is a challenge he is doomed to fail. Yet he has to try.

Before he loses his heart.
