[Review]: Urban Enemies- Anthology Edited by Joseph Nassise

Title: Urban Enemies
Author: Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong, Jeff Somers, Craig Schaefer, Lilith Saintcrow, Kevin Hearne, Caitlin Kittredge, Joseph Nassise, Carrie Vaughn, Jonathan Maberry, Faith Hunter, Jon E. Merz, Diana Pharaoh Francis, Steven Savile, Seanan McGuire and Sam Witt
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Anthology
Release Date: August 1, 2017

I received the book from Simon & Schuster, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Villains have all the fun—everyone knows that—and this anthology takes you on a wild ride through the dark side! The top villains from sixteen urban fantasy series get their own stories—including the baddies of New York Times bestselling authors Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Kelley Armstrong, Seanan McGuire, and Jonathan Maberry.

For every hero trying to save the world, there’s a villain trying to tear it all down.

In this can’t-miss anthology edited by Joseph Nassise (The Templar Chronicles), you get to plot world domination with the best of the evildoers we love to hate! This outstanding collection brings you stories told from the villains’ point of view, imparting a fresh and unique take on the evil masterminds, wicked witches, and infernal personalities that skulk in the pages of today’s most popular series.

The full anthology features stories by Jim Butcher (the Dresden Files), Kelley Armstrong (the Cainsville and Otherworld series), Seanan McGuire (October Daye), Kevin Hearne (The Iron Druid Chronicles), Jonathan Maberry (Joe Ledger), Lilith Saintcrow (Jill Kismet), Carrie Vaughn (Kitty Norville), Joseph Nassise (Templar Chronicles), C.E. Murphy (Walker Papers), Steven Savile (Glasstown), Caitlin Kittredge (the Hellhound Chronicles and the Black London series), Jeffrey Somers (The Ustari Cycle), Sam Witt (Pitchfork County), Craig Schaefer (Daniel Faust), Jon F. Merz (Lawson Vampire), Faith Hunter (Jane Yellowrock), and Diana Pharaoh Francis (Horngate Witches).

Thoughts: I loved it. Reading the stories actually made me miss the main characters of the series. This is a pretty perfect anthology, many amazing storytellers.

The Naughtiest Cherub- Kevin Hearne
This is part of Iron Druid Chronicles and takes place after Book 8, Staked. Loki visits Lucifer to ask for help. I love this series and really enjoyed this one.  For some reason I found the this idea funny.  The God of Mischief and the Lord of Hell meeting, Loki must be pretty desperate.

Even Hand- Jim Butcher
This story features John Marcone from The Dresden Files. Since Marcone wants to kill Harry, he's not one of my favorite characters. That being said this was still an enjoyable story. It felt a bit different compared to the other Dresden short stories.

Bellum Romanum- Carrie Vaughn
It's been a while since I read the Kitty Norville series, Though I do recall Roman/Gaius Albinus. He is very old and quite the evil charmer. I loved this one as well. Intriguing read, but then again most the Kitty's world is.

[Review]: The Romeo Catchers by Alys Arden

Title: The Romeo Catchers
Author: Alys Arden
Series: The Casquette Girls
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: May 23, 2017

Summary:  Is blood thicker than magic in La Nouvelle-OrlĂ©ans?

Tormented by the fate she condemned her mother to, and by the lies she’s forced to tell to cover it up, Adele scours Storm-ravaged New Orleans for the truth about her family’s magical past. But every turn leads her back to the one person she's determined to forget: Niccolò Medici. Not even the multitude of enchanted locks on the attic door trapping Nicco within can break their connection.

Sensing Nicco calling to Adele, Isaac tries relentlessly to keep her from exploring paths too dark that would endanger them all. But a new threat is rising: the Medici’s presence has attracted something else to New Orleans…an older enemy, one that will bring Isaac’s haunted past to life, test the witches’ friendships, and jeopardize Adele and Isaac’s blossoming relationship.

In this spellbinding continuation of The Casquette Girls saga, Adele must draw on the past—from seventeenth-century Florence, a time bubbling with alchemy and fraternal betrayal—and sort history from fantasy if she is to have any chance of saving her mother, her coven, and her magic.

Thoughts:
The Romeo Catchers is the sequel to The Casquette Girls, which definitely was my favorite book from last year. This was a brilliant sequel. In this continuation we got a story from different points of view. I loved learning about the Medici Brothers riveting backstory.  Isaac and Adele learning their new powers and oh, that ending. I can't wait for more. Ms. Arden is an amazing storyteller. This is really a statement for the whole series, but here it is....If you didn't go into this book loving New Orleans, by the end of the book/series, you will. A must read.

[AudioBook Review]: Born of Vengeance by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Title: Born of Vengeance
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Narrated: Fred Berman
Series: The League: Nemesis Rising
Genre: SciFi Romance
Release Date: February 7, 2017

I received this book from Macmillan Audio, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  A fate worse death...

Bastien Cabarro survived the brutal slaughter of his entire family only to have his wife pin their murders on him. Made Ravin by The League, he is now a target for their assassins-in-training to hunt and kill. The average life expectancy for such beings is six weeks. But defying the odds is what this Gyron Force officer does best, and Bastien won't rest until he lays his betrayers in their graves.

Ten years later, he has one chance to balance the scales of justice, provided he relies on his former wingman--the very sister of the woman who testified against him.

Major Ember Wyldestarrin joined the outlaw Tavali the day Kirovar fell in the the hands of a tyrant, and she and her sister-team were left on an outpost to die under the barrage of enemy fire. The last thing she wants is to be involved in politics again. But the one thing she wants more than anything is revenge on the tyrant who murdered her parents and forced her and her sisters into exile. Carrying a secret she knows Bastien will annihilate her over, she must find some way to trust her former wingman before he catches on and kills her. Even so, treachery doesn't come easy to a woman who took a loyalty oath to protect her homeworld and comrades-in-arms, especially when Bastien is much more to her than just a former wingman.

Yet as she tries to do right for her family, she learns that Bastien doesn't just hold the key to the fate of Kirovar, he is vital to The Sentella-League war, and to The Tavali. If she doesn't ensure he survives this mission, three nations fall, and time for all of them is quickly running out.

Thoughts: This latest book is about Bastien and Ember and getting revenge on the family members who ruined their lives.  I really liked these two.  Like past books in the series there were a few repeated scenes but this time from Bastien's point of view. I like that Kenyon does that, it's interesting seeing events from different characters point of view. Naturally, I loved this book. There hasn't been a book in this series that I didn't like.

There is also a bonus story at the end of this book featuring Nykyrian & Julian.

Mini Review + Series Spotlight: Inn Boonsboro Trilogy by Nora Roberts

In 2016 the most surprising read was the Inn Boonsboro Trilogy by Nora Roberts. I had read some of her In Death books under J.D. Robb. But none of the Nora Roberts titles. But this trilogy was just amazing to me.

I was watching Love Between the Covers, a documentary about romance books, authors and the industry. Featured in the documentary was The Next Always and there was also a scene of  a signing at the real Inn Boonsboro in Maryland I was definitely intrigued and went to find the first book.

Thoughts on the Trilogy: I loved the family dynamic all three books had. The 3 brothers themselves and the relationship with their mother and the love of their craft and of course the stories with their loves.  It has a great small town feel, the Inn and the history behind it were great. I just loved it... all three books. I was hooked by the first chapter in The Next Always. To top it off Inn BoonsBoro, Vesta Pizza, The Taphouse and Turn the Page Bookstore all are real and exist in BoonsBoro, Maryland. I have only been to Maryland once, but if I ever got back I definitely want to stop in Boonsboro.

I'll put links for the author, documentary and Inn Boonsboro below
If you are looking for Love Between the Covers its available at Netflix
Amazon & iTunes.

The Next Always

The historic hotel in Boonsboro has endured war and peace, changing hands, even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major facelift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. Beckett is the architect of the family, and his social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was fifteen.

After losing her husband and returning to her hometown, Clare Brewster soon settles into her life as the mother of three young sons while running the town’s bookstore. Busy, with little time for romance, Clare is drawn across the street by Beckett’s transformation of the old inn, wanting to take a closer look . . . at the building and the man behind it.

With the grand opening inching closer, Beckett’s happy to give Clare a private tour - one room at a time. It’s no first date, but these stolen moments are the beginning of something new - and open the door to the extraordinary adventure of what comes next . . .

The Last Boyfriend

Owen is the organizer of the Montgomery clan, running the family's construction business with an iron fist - and an even less flexible spreadsheet. And though his brothers give him grief for his compulsive list making, the Inn BoonsBoro is about to open right on schedule. The only thing Owen didn't plan for was Avery MacTavish....

Avery's popular pizza place is right across the street from the inn, giving her a first-hand look at its amazing renovation — and a new found appreciation for Owen. Since he was her first boyfriend when they were kids, Owen has never been far from Avery's thoughts. But the attraction she's feeling for him now is far from innocent.

As Avery and Owen cautiously take their relationship to another level, the opening of the inn gives the whole town of BoonsBoro a reason to celebrate. But Owen's hard work has only begun. Getting Avery to let down her guard is going to take longer than he expected — and so will getting her to realize that her first boyfriend is going to be her last....

The Perfect Hope

Ryder is the hardest Montgomery brother to figure out - with a tough-as-nails outside and possibly nothing too soft underneath. He's surly and unsociable, but when he straps on a tool belt, no woman can resist his sexy swagger. Except, apparently, Hope Beaumont, the innkeeper of his own Inn BoonsBoro...

As the former manager of a D.C. hotel, Hope is used to excitement and glamour, but that doesn't mean she can't appreciate the joys of small-town living. She's where she wants to be - except for in her love life. Her only interaction with the opposite sex has been sparring with the infuriating Ryder, who always seems to get under her skin. Still, no one can deny the electricity that crackles between them...a spark that ignited with a New Year's Eve kiss.

While the inn is running smoothly, thanks to Hope's experience and unerring instincts, her big-city past is about to make an unwelcome - and embarrassing - appearance. Seeing Hope vulnerable stirs up Ryder's emotions and makes him realize that while Hope may not be perfect, she just might be perfect for him...

[Review]: Secrets in the Snow by Michaela MacColl

Title: Secrets in the Snow
Author: Michaela MacColl
Genre: Historical Fiction/Mystery
Release Date: October 4, 2016

I received this book from Chronicle Books , in exchange of an honest review.

Summary:  Jane Austen's family is eager to secure her future by marrying her off. But Jane is much more interested in writing her novels and finds every suitor lacking in one way or another. That is until the mysterious Mr. Lefroy arrives on the scene.

Much like the famous character Mr. Darcy, from one of the real-life Jane Austen's  famous novels, Mr. Lefroy initially seems arrogant and distasteful.  But the more Jane gets to know him, the more she discovers his kind nature. Can it be that he's the suitor for her? Before Jane can find out, her cousin is accused of aiding the French, England's enemy, and Jane finds herself busy proving her family innocence, solving a murder, and facing a decision that might mean the sacrifice of her one true love.

Thoughts: When I received this book, I hadn't heard of it. I wasn't sure I was gonna read it. But when I read it involved Jane Austen, it definitely peaked my interest.  This was a wonderful read for me. I loved the mystery and intrigue that Secrets in the Snow offered. I would  have loved to seen more Jane and Lefroy, other than that it was great. Ms. MacColl does an amazing job bring Jane Austen and her world to life.  If you love Jane Austen and a good mystery, this one is for you.

On a side note if you want more Jane Austen and Mr. Lefroy I would suggest the movie Becoming Jane. I recently watched it and loved it.

[Review]: Blood Red Kiss by Kresley Cole, Larissa Ione & Gena Showalter

Title: Blood Red Kiss
Author: Kresley Cole, Larissa Ione & Gena Showalter
Series: Immortals After Dark, MoonBound Clan & Otherworld Assassins
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: September 20, 2016

I received this book from Simon & Schuster, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  In Kresley Cole’s celebrated story “The Warlord Wants Forever,” the first in her scorching Immortals After Dark series, vampire warlord Nikolai Wroth will stop at nothing to claim his Bride, the one woman who can make his heart beat again. But can beautiful Myst the Coveted accept an enemy vampire as her own?

Tehya has spent the last twelve years as an accidental wolf, but is truly a vampire at heart. When she gets injured, Lobo sneaks her inside MoonBound’s headquarters and nurses her back to health…with potentially deadly consequences. Desire collides with danger in “Forsaken by Night,” a MoonBound Clan novella from Larissa Ione!

In Gena Showalter’s Otherworld Assassins novella, Dark Swan, Lilica Swan isn’t quite human or otherworlder; she is the best—and worst—of both. She is willing to do whatever proves necessary to save her sister from the seductive and deadly Alien Investigation and Removal agent, Dallas Gutierrez, even bond her life to his…effectively wedding him. But without consummation, the bond will fade. Can Dallas resist his insatiable desire for the powerful beauty? Or will she lead to his ultimate downfall?

Thoughts:

The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole
I first read this short story back in 2006 when it was released in an anthology called Playing Easy to Get. Next to A Hunger Like No Other, The Warlord Wants Forever is one of my favorite stories in the Immortals After Dark series. This version has been revised, but it's still an awesome read and Myst and Nikolai are hot as ever.

Forsaken by Night by Larissa Ione
I really enjoyed Tehya & Lobo's story. For a wolf/vampire story I thought it was pretty unique. Love the MoonBound Clan series, so I was excited to read this one.  I'm hoping there will be more stories in this series.

Dark Swan by Gena Showalter
This story is part of the Otherworld Assassins series, which is one I haven't gotten to yet. Another good read. My favorite part of this story was Dallas Guierrez who is from the Alien Huntress series, which I loved.

All in all Blood Red Kiss is a Paranormal Romance fan's dream. Three great authors and three fast paced, sexy reads.

[Review]: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Title: The Girl on the Train
Author: Paula Hawkins
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Release Date: January 13, 2015

Summary:  EVERY DAY THE SAME

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

UNTIL TODAY

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Thoughts: I picked this one up after seeing the trailer for the movie. I loved it, even though at times it was very hard to read. Mainly because the separation, depression and alcoholism the lead character is dealing with.  The Girl on the Train is a dark and engaging. I was sucked in instantly. Eager to know these characters and what happened and who did what.  I believe the book is a bit of a cautionary tale... people aren't always what they seam to be, even if they think you know them. I'm real picky with mystery/thriller but I look forward to Ms Hawkins' next book.

This has probably been said a million times, but I'm going say it again If you loved Gillian Flynn's books, I highly recommend this one.

[ARC Review]: Mata Hari's Last Dance by Michelle Moran

Title: Mata Hari's Last Dance
Author: Michelle Moran
Genre: Historical Fiction
Release Date: July 19, 2016

I received this book from Touchstone, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  From the international bestselling author of Rebel Queen and Nefertiti comes a captivating novel about the infamous Mata Hari, exotic dancer, adored courtesan, and, possibly, relentless spy.

Paris, 1917. The notorious dancer Mata Hari sits in a cold cell awaiting freedom…or death. Alone and despondent, Mata Hari is as confused as the rest of the world about the charges she’s been arrested on: treason leading to the deaths of thousands of French soldiers.

As Mata Hari waits for her fate to be decided, she relays the story of her life to a reporter who is allowed to visit her in prison. Beginning with her carefree childhood, Mata Hari recounts her father’s cruel abandonment of her family as well her calamitous marriage to a military officer. Taken to the island of Java, Mata Hari refuses to be ruled by her abusive husband and instead learns to dance, paving the way to her stardom as Europe’s most infamous dancer.

Thoughts: Going into this I had heard of Mata Hari, but didn't know much except that she was a dancer and was executed for being a spy.  Ms. Moran spins a vibrant tale that spans the globe and the years of 1904-1917.  It was intriguing to learn more about Mata Hari the woman.  Mata Hari's Last Dance is a great read. It paints exciting picture of love, dancing and loneliness and heartbreak.

[Review]: The Drafter by Kim Harrison

Title: The Drafter
Author: Kim Harrison
Series: The Peri Reed Chronicles
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Science Fiction
Release Date: September 1, 2015

I received this book from Simon & Schuster, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run. Don’t forgive and never forget has always been Peri’s creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote.

When Peri discovers her name is on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. Her memory of the previous three years erased, she joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her fateful final task. Her motto has always been only to kill those who kill her first. But with nothing but intuition to guide her, will she have to break her own rule to survive?

Thoughts: Great Read!  This thing that Peri is/does... Drafting in a way is a sad thing. To lose memories and time is violating, your heart goes out to her.  But despite all that Peri is a kick ass character that I just love. The Drafter is unique, fast paced and action that keeps you turning the page. I love the futuristic setting. I think fans who loved Harrison's Rachel Morgan series,  will love Peri Reed. [Review]: Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Title: Because of Miss Bridgerton
Author: Julia Quinn
Series: Bridgertons/Rokesbys
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: March 29, 2016

Summary:   Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

Thoughts
: I'm a big fan of the Bridgertons series, I was hooked from the first pages of The Duke and I.  I have been waiting patiently (okay maybe not patiently) for this one  to come out.  Going into the book, I thought this was gonna deal with one of the Bridgertons children. But no Ms. Quinn went back a bit to 1779, telling the story about Billie Bridgerton, The Bridgerton's aunt.  I was absolutely entranced once again and can't wait to read more. This book has everything I love about the Bridgertons series and it is also fresh and new.  A must read.

If you're worried about reading all the Bridgerton books to get to this one (all though I highly recommend them. Great series) don't be. Because of Miss Bridgerton can be read as a stand alone.

Title: Waylaid
Author: Kim Harrison
Series: Hollows/Drafter crossover
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Science Fiction
Release Date: April 4, 2016

I received this book from Simon & Schuster, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway.

To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

Thoughts: I haven't read Peri Reed's story in The Drafter, but love the Rachel Morgan books. I was excited to see there was gonna be a crossover story.  Excellent read. Peri & Rachel are quite different, but it was interesting to see them interact. I loved the story, a fast fun read. [Review]: Between a Vamp and a Hard Place by Jessica Sims

Title: Between a Vamp and a Hard Place
Author: Jessica Sims
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: December 29, 2015

I received this book from Simon & Schuster , in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Lindsey Hughes loves antiques and couldn’t be happier to make a living in the estate sale business. But when her assistant accidentally buys an entire estate without her approval, Lindsey is forced to clean up the mess herself.

Lindsey travels to the newly purchased, age-old house in Venice, Italy, and soon discovers more than she (never) bargained for. While digging through the hoarder’s trove that fills every floor, she finds a secret staircase behind a wall that leads to a strange coffin…with an even stranger inhabitant.

Vampire Rand FitzWulf has been in his coffin for 600 years. But now that he’s awake, he’s ravenous, and there’s a delicious-smelling woman with a rare blood type in his basement. Luckily, Lindsey has more to offer than blood: she agrees to travel throughout Europe with Rand to help him get revenge on the one who turned him. But as the unlikely pair grows closer, will the billionaire vampire be overtaken by his thirst for blood—or his thirst for love?

Thoughts:
Going into this book - for some reason I thought this was a continuation of Midnight Liaison (which is a good series). But it seems to be a stand alone. Here we have new setting and new characters, very refreshing. Lindsey & Rand are a fantastic pair. He is quite cheeky. I loved the curiosity he has to being  in the modern world.  Between a Vamp and a Hard Place is a great read. I definitely recommend it, especially if your look for a good vampire story.

[ARC Review]: Sweet Ruin by Kresley Cole

Title: Sweet Ruin
Author: Kresley Cole
Series: Immortals After Dark
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: December 1, 2016

I received this book from Simon & Schuster, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary: A foundling raised in a world of humans

Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Her baby brother Thaddeus was as perfect as she was flawed; protecting him became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl…to would-be superhero…to enchanting, ruthless villain.

A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission

A threat to the Møriør has brought archer Rune the Baneblood to the mortal realm to slay the oldest living Valkyrie. Whether by bow or in bed, he never fails to eliminate his target. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty conceals a black heart. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, taking his forbidden blood—and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.

A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin…

Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. Despite his millennia of sexual conquests, he can’t ignore the unfamiliar longing she arouses deep within him. When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.

Thoughts: Great read! This latest installment centers around Josephine (Jo) and Rune the Baneblood. While yes they are both Lorean, they are bit of an odd couple. I wasn't too sure about them at first but it in the end they were pretty perfect for each other . Rune radiates everything sexiness and Jo, she grows on you.  I am eager to read Nix and other characters stories, but it was refreshing to be introduced to some new characters. Once again Kresley Cole delivers and Sweet Ruin is a must read.

Title: Born of Betrayal
Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon
Narrator: Fred Berman
Series: The League
Genre: SciFi Romance
Release Date: November 3, 2015

I received this audio book from Macmillan Audio, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Years ago, family loyalty caused Fain Hauk to give up everything he loved: His military career. His planet. His fiancĂ©e. Even his name.
Now decades later, everything has changed. He’s built a new life out of the ashes of his old, and he’s vowed to never let anything threaten his loved ones again.

But when old enemies align themselves with new ones, he’s caught in the middle of a brutal war. The fate of the Ichidian universe and that of his brothers-in-arms hangs in the balance. Winner take all.

It’s killed or be killed, and never has the battle been more fierce…

Or more fun.

Thoughts: If you read the last book Born of Defiance, you'll see some familiar faces like Talyn & Galene, as well as others from previous books. This latest edition tells the story of Fain Hauk. I was excited for this one especially because of his connection with Tayln & Galene. I knew it was gonna be a good one and it was.  Kenyon as always hits it out of the park. It amazes me how these books never get old. Sometimes that can happen with a long series, but every book holds something more exciting then the next.

Fred Berman is again narrating and it's wonderful how he embodies the characters.

The yarn figures are a wonder and perfect to the last detail. These books are a great way to introduce the Star Wars universe to the little ones in your family. I look forward to sharing these books with my niece's kids.

[Review]: Star Wars: Lost Stars by Claudia Gray

Title: Lost Stars
Author: Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: September 4, 2015

Summary:  The reign of the Galactic Empire has reached the Outer Rim of Jelucan, where aristocratic Thane Kyrell and rural villager Ciena Ree bond over their love of flying. Enrolling at the Imperial Academy is nothing less than a dream come true for both of them. But Thane sours on the dream when he sees firsthand the horrific tactics the Empire uses to maintain it's ironclad rule.

Bitter and disillusioned, he joins the fledgling Rebellion--putting Ciena in an unbearable position between her loyalty to the Empire and her love for the man she's known since childhood.

Now on opposite sides of the war, will these friends turned foes ever find a way to be together, or will duty tear them--and the galaxy--apart?

Star Wars: Lost Stars includes all-new post- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi content, as well as clues about the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Thoughts: Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell are only 8 when they become the best of friends.   Ciena is from the valley, while Thane is a second waver and comes from a wealthy family. But they don't care. They are friends and love flying together with hopes of going to the Imperial Academy. What they don't know is how evil the Empire is or how the war will change their lives in the most shocking ways.

This was a fantastic read. I've read a few Star Wars books, but so for this is my favorite. It's a bit of long read at 551, but definitely worth the time.  Lost Stars takes place during the Galactic Civil War. Revisit the Death Star and it's destruction, Battle of Hoth & the Battle of Endor, this time from the point of view of Thane and Ciena.  If your a Star Wars fan and thinking of skipping this one because it YA, don't. It's damn good read and it has everything you love about the movies.

[Review]: The Chess Queen Enigma by Colleen Gleason

Title: The Chess Queen Enigma
Author: Colleen Gleason
Series: Stoker & Holmes
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: October 6, 2015

I received this book from Chronicle Books, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes have reluctantly agreed to act as social chaperones and undercover bodyguards for Princess Lurelia of Betrovia, who has arrived in London to deliver a litter with the location of an ancient chess queen that's been missing for centuries.

But when the letter--which will heal a centuries-old rift between England and the Betrovians--is stolen out from under Evaline and Mina's watchful eyes, the two girls are forced into a high stakes race to ensure they find the chess queen before anyone else does. . . including their foes, the Ankh.

For the chess queen is not only a historic symbol of a woman's political power, but it has literal power as well--the queen will unlock the chessboard, revealing both treasures and ancient secrets the Ankh would kill to possess. It will take Mina's smarts and Evaline's strength to beat the thief and untangle this mystery before it's too late.

Thoughts: Mina & Evaline are given the task of entertaining and keeping an eye on Princess Lurelia of Betrovia. With vampires around and the Ankh still on the loose the girls will definitely have a lot on their hands.

Ms. Gleason has written an excellent addition to this series.  Mina Holmes was a bit more likable in this one. The last two books I really didn't like her at all. But towards the end of book three here, I started to like her more. I loved all the Queen Elizabeth/history bits that were part of the story. The Chess Queen Enigma is full of mystery and intrigue. Had a sweet ending, not so much of a cliffhanger, but I look forward to their next case.

[Review]: The Uninvited by Heather Graham

Title: The Uninvited
Author: Heather Graham
Series: Krewe of Hunters
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Mystery
Release Date: August 28, 2012

Summary:  1777: In the throes of the Revolutionary War, Landon Mansion is commandeered by British Lord "Butcher" Bedford. He stabs Lucy Tarleton—who spurned his king and his love—leaving her to die in her father's arms.

NOW: After the day's final tour, docent Allison Leigh makes her rounds while locking up…and finds a colleague slumped over Bedford's desk, impaled on his own replica bayonet.

Resident ghosts may be the stock-in-trade of stately Philadelphia homes, but Allison—a noted historian—is indignant at the prospect of "ghost hunters" investigating this apparent murder.

Agent Tyler Montague knows his hauntings and his history. But while Allison is skeptical of the newcomer, a second mysterious murder occurs. Has "Butcher" Bedford resurfaced? Or is there another malevolent force at work in Landon Mansion? Wary, yet deeply attracted, Allison has to trust in Tyler and work with him to discover just what uninvited guest—dead or alive—has taken over the house. Or their lives could become history!

Thoughts:
This story surrounds the Tarleton-Dandridge House in Philadelphia  where in 1777 Patriot Lucy Tarleton was killed by her British lover, Lord Bedford. At least that's what history tells us. In present day Allison Leigh a docent of the house is about to encounter death, murder, ghosts and one seriously hunky Agent Tyler Montague.

The Uninvited was an excellent read. I loved the background and history.  Allison & Tyler are quite an interesting pair. The romance was slow going, but definitely worth the wait. Between the house, past and present death all made a great mystery. I thought for sure I knew who did it, but I was so shocked at the reveal. I was way off. Ms Graham is a grand storyteller.

[Mini-Review]: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

I was totally sucked in when I seen the movie, Gone Girl The same happened when I watched the trailer for Dark Places. I couldn't wait for the movie, so I picked up the book. From the first page I was entranced.  This books is dark and suspenseful. Full of mystery that keeps you turning the page. Libby isn't necessarily a likeable character, but she grows on you. Dark Places is not my usually type of read but I loved this one and definitely recommend it.

Review: Phantom Evil by Heather Graham

Title: Phantom Evil
Author: Heather Graham
Series: Krewe of Hunters
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Mystery
Release Date: March 29, 2011

Summary:  A secret government unit, a group of renegade paranormal investigators... and a murder no one else can crack.

Though haunted by the recent deaths of two teammates, Jackson Crow knows that the living commit the most heinous crimes.

A police officer utilizing her paranormal intuition, Angela Hawkins already has her hands full of mystery and bloodshed.

But one assignment calls to them too strongly to resist. In a historic mansion in New Orleans's French Quarter, a senator's wife falls to her death. Most think she jumped; some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits inhabiting the house — once the site of a serial killer's grisly work.

In this seemingly unsolvable case, only one thing is certain: whether supernatural or all too human, crimes of passion will cast Jackson and Angela into danger of losing their lives... and their immortal souls.

Thoughts: Heather Graham has been on my authors to read list for a long time now. I wish I would have started earlier than I did. Phantom Evil is an excellent story. It's a wonderful mixture of paranormal, romance and mystery. I admit the "secret government unit" almost put me off, but the Krewe  is exciting mix of people. I look forward to reading more of the books.  I definitely recommend this one. I know some people might be put off by how many books are in the series, but just by reading the first book - I can see it's gonna be worth it.

Score: 4 Stars.
