TF: I have been married for almost twenty years to the love of my life. (He wears shirts with pictures of my book covers to the grocery store and they say “I slept with the author and I inspired pages…whatever through whatever.” He also tries to convince people he’s the man on the cover. I have two boys – one is almost 18 and the other is 8. I am the quintessential sports mom. Do the words ‘cow bell’ mean anything to you? That’s me.
A Lady and Her Magic is your newest release, can you tells us a little about it?
TF: Rules are made to be broken, and scandals are destined to be shocking. That’s the premise of the book. Both Sophia Thorne and the Duke of Robinsworth live by a strict code of conduct. Sophia is bound by a list of Unpardonable Errors and Ashley is bound by the rules of society. It’s unfortunate for him that his wife was murdered and he’s assumed to be the culprit. Sophia is placed in his household to help his wayward daughter, who witnessed her mother’s death. It’s not until Ashley’s melancholy piano playing draws her to his chambers late one night that things get out of control. She can’t resist him, and he can’t seem to resist her. He has no desire to do so, and leaves his reclusive life to rejoin society – all for her. But she can’t accept him or his lifestyle, since she’s not of his world.
What is your writing day like?
TF: Typically, I write for one hour a day. That means no TV, no talking voices, and nothing to distract me. It’s difficult to get it, because I usually have at least one kid asking me for something or the dogs fighting to see who gets to lay closest to my feet!
How did you come up with your idea for A Lady and Her Magic? Anything particular inspire you while writing?
TF: I’m inspired by everything! The hardest thing is keeping the stories out of my head long enough to finish what I’m working on. The idea for A Lady and Her Magic was actually born of a contemporary story I had in mind. Then I started to think of all the ways I could turn it into an interesting historical. The pieces fell into place like clockwork, and Sophia and Ashley came to life at my fingertips, wings and all.
When you’re not writing what kind of books do you like to read?
TF: Paranormal and historical are my favorites. I love to read stories with good world building when I’m reading paranormal or fantasy. I like to know how and why things happen differently in that world and how the people are affected by the world almost as much as the other characters in the book.
What are 3 things that are "must haves" for you when you sit down to write a book?
TF: 1. I have to know what their conflict is. What’s going to keep them apart? 2. I also like to know what makes them tick – things like… What’s in their bedside tables? How do they feel about religion? Their favorite toy to play with as a child? My characters get an interview so I can get to know them before I can start writing. 3. DIET DR. PEPPER! LOTs of it.
What do you love most about writing historical romance?
TF: I like the glittering balls, the dashing gentlemen who can be both rakish and heroic at the same time. I like stepping out of my life and into a world I could never live in.
If you could give your lead characters one piece of advice, what would it be?
TF: I would have told Ashley to beware of the garden gnome a lot sooner. Ronald bites.
If you can, please tell us what is next for you?
TF: Next, Ava Stone and I, writing as Lydia Dare, have a release in November called Wolfishly Yours. Then after that the next release for me will be the second in the fae series, which is tentatively titled The Magic of “I Do.”
A LADY AND HER MAGIC
By Tammy Falkner
Rules Are Made to be Disobeyed... Sophia Thorne is new to the Regency's glittering high society, which resembles her magical homeland only insofar as both places are filled with ridiculous rules. Which means no matter where she goes, she's bound for trouble...
And Scandals Are Meant to be Shocking... The Duke of Robinsworth has flaunted and shocked society for years. In a moment of fateful mischief, Robinsworth encounters the enchanting and distinctly scandalous Sophia. Between her streak of magical mischief and his penchant for scandal, they're about to take rule-breaking to a whole new level...
ABOUT THE AUTHOR As half of the Lydia Dare writing team, Tammy Falkner has co-written ten books, including A Certain Wolfish Charm and In the Heat of the Bite. A huge fan of Regency England, her new series explores the theory that the fae can walk between the glittering world of the ton and their own land. Tammy lives on a farm in rural North Carolina with her husband and a house full of boys, a few dogs, and a cat or two.
