[Review] - Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian

Title: Edge of Dawn
Author: Lara Adrian
Series: Midnight Breed
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: February 26, 2013

I received this book from Random House, in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:  Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

Thoughts: It's been 20 years since the humans learned of the existence of vampires - a world changing event for both sides that is now referred to as the First Dawn.  Mira who was raised in the Order is now a grown women and a warrior in her own right. She is still mourning the death of her bond mate Kellan.

I love the Midnight Breeds, especially the early books. With the last book (Darker After Midnight) I did wonder where the author would take the series. I have to say I was excited to hear that the story was moving 20 years into the future. What great way to keep the series fresh and alive.

Edge of Dawn is a great read. Sensual and suspenseful with edge of your seat action, I loved it.  I really enjoyed Mira & Kellan's journey, although Kellan's stubbornness was frustrating.  With this story we are introduced to new characters but the original Order make an appearance as well. It was cool getting to see the next/new generation included into the storyline. I believe both new and old fans will enjoy this installment.

Score: 4 Stars

  1. It's got to be hard for an author to keep a series fresh after so many books. I hope Lara mixes it up even more in the future books. Great review Anna....me love me some Breed too :-)

  2. I actually liked this book. I too was wondering how Lara Adrian would make this work. So far, so good. I wonder if she can keep it up though? Perhaps the new twist in the story line will help.
