Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each Tuesday features a different topic and you post your top ten list related to the topic.

This weeks topic is Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects.

1. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
Cancer - Beautiful book. I cried and cried, but loved it.

2. Willow by Julia Hoban
Cutting/Depression - I received this one for review. I knew it was about a girl who was cutting herself. I wasn't sure I was gonna like it. But of course I ended up really enjoying the book. Still hoping Hoban will put out another book.

3. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Racism - I never read this one in high school like many others have, but I have always
wanted to read it. It's been a favorite of my mom's for years, so I thought I'd finally get to it. I loved it, although I think I liked the movie more. Gregory Peck was amazing.

4. Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson
Death - This one was recommended to me by a friend. I spent most of this book crying my eyes out. So, heartbreaking and so beautiful. It sits on my bookshelf, I'll probably re-read it one day.

5. Everything Sucks by Hannah Friedman (non-fiction)
Drugs/Eating Disorder - This was great read, a fast one too. It's a memoir and a story of finding out who you are.

6. Looking For Alaska by John Green
Death - This was my first John Green book. I loved the boarding school setting. But Green writes characters so wonderfully that the settings rarely matter. This was a good but sad story.

7. Receive Me Falling by Erika Robuck
Death/Family Secrets/Slavery - I reviewed this one back in 2009. It was me stepping out of my reading comfort zone, but it was a great experience. I loved the story. The history and the mystery were so enthralling.

8. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Shafer & Anne Barrows
World War II - This is another book that was recommended to me. Not a book I would normally pick up on my own, but I'm glad I did. It was the first I had heard about Guernsey. The history, occupation and the characters really keep you turning the page.

9. Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
BDSM - I know a lot of people hated this book/series. But I really enjoyed it. I've read other books with BDSM featured, but I thought this one was pretty tame. The transformation of Christian Grey through the three books was great.

10. Rae by Chelsea Rae Swiggett  (non-fiction)
Anxiety/Social Phobia - I suffer from Anxiety Disorder. I have somewhat a handle on it, but it was nice reading this one.  Reading Rae's journey through things I've been dealing with was inspiring.

  1. I didn't know what I was in for when I picked up Looking for Alaska, so I was pretty shocked when the character death came around. Still loved the book, though. Nice list. :)
