My 2014 Shopping List

I love doing these lists. They help keep me organized and help spread the word about books I’m excited to read. Most of these are books in series I’ve been reading for years. They’re my autobuys that I think about all year and wish I would savor instead of, you know, devouring them the second they arrive on my Paperwhite.
          1. Night Broken by Patricia Briggs – This one releases on March 11th and is the eighth title in her Mercy Thompson series. I am bouncing in my chair just typing the title. I’m so ready for this one. I’m always thrilled to revisit the Mercyverse.
          2. Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen – This is a new-to-me author, but the cover caught my eye and I had to check out the blurb. I’m a sucker for the marriage of convenience trope, and this one has trolls! You really don’t see those in a positive light often. I’m very interested to give this one a try.
          3. Skin Game by Jim Butcher – This one has a May 27th release date. It kills me to wait so long between books, but they’re always worth it. The end of the last book made me sit up and go WTH??? I can’t wait to see where that thread picks up with this new book.
          4. Dark Skye by Kresley Cole – With an August 5th release date, I’m definitely wearing my grumpy face. I’ve been reading her Arcana Chronicles, but I love IAD. I want more of them and it seems like it’s been forever since the last book.
          5. Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews – Is it July yet? No? *sobs* Don’t mind me while I go rock in the corner. The next Kate Daniels book releases on July 29th, and I think I want this one most of all. I discovered this series last year and read the entire backlist in a week. This waiting stuff kills me. I need this book! Now!

The thing I notice when I look at this list is that it’s heavily slanted toward urban fantasy. I can’t help myself. I love UF. I think my Paperwhite has something like ninety-nine UF titles on it right now. I’m not sure what draws me to the genre more—strong female characters or the diversity of their worlds. The heroes don’t hurt either. There’s something about the room allowed for character growth in UF that you just don’t have time for in other romance genres. Most couples in UF have a couple of books’ worth of trials before finally settling down and kicking ass together. It’s like romance in (almost) real time. Granted, that also makes me want to pull out my hair sometimes. But if I’m that invested in the outcome, it has to be a good thing right?

Tell me your favorite genre (along with your email address) and you’ll be entered in the contest. One lucky commenter will win a $5 gift card to Samhain Publishing and a $5 Amazon gift card. If you have any recommendations for me, leave those in the comments too. New-to-me series and authors are always welcome.  Open to everyone. The winner will be announced on February 26th.

 A Kiss of Venom
Araneae Nation #3.5

All’s fair in love and murder…

Betrayed by her lover and exiled from her clan home, Nicolette has carved herself a new identity from the heart of her old life. Hardened by grief and desperate to survive, she hones a new skill set…and the daggers that go along with it.

Armand is heir to the wealthiest clan in the Araneae Nation. His entire life is as mapped as his heritage. Tradition dictates his every decision, and the one choice he ever made for himself cost him the woman he loved.

When Nicolette is offered a contract she can’t refuse, she returns to Erania with deadly intentions. Her secrets are safe behind the fa├žade she created. Or they would be if Armand would stop chipping at the cracks in her veneer.

One kiss ignites an old flame, and suddenly their history is in danger of repeating. Armand falls for Nicolette’s charade, but she can’t let a second chance at happiness distract her from her mission. Someone in the Araneidae nest is marked for death, and Nicolette aims to deliver.

Warning: This story contains one heroine bent on revenge and one hero determined to atone for his sins. Also included are venom kisses, poison hangovers, pointy objects and questionable taste in condiments. Expect fireworks, near-death experiences and one surprise ten years in the making.
